šŸ¤—Hello and welcome to this unique CC - Learn Enchanting Latin šŸ¤—
Non est ad astra mollis e terris via - Do you know what it means?
Ever heard of the famous dialogue "Veni, Vidi, Vici" ?
Or read the outstanding ouevre Aeneis by Vergilius?
You're surely missing something if you reply NO to any of these questions !!
Introduction
Latin is an Indogermanic language originally spoken in Latium and in Ancient Rome.

French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and other languages have inherited a large amount of their vocabulary from Latin.

Latin - A dead Language ?? -
Not really!!

Doctors use Latin - vertebra, humerus, auris.

Lawyers use Latin - res iudicata, subpoena.

Architects use Latin - basilica.

You use Latin when you buy a car - Fiat.

You use terms like etc (et cetera), idem when you write a research paper.

When you go to the church - pater noter.

Or for all movie freaks - Julius Caesar and Spartacus.

Here's an interesting comparison: Reading Latin is like eating health food. It's tough to digest, but you feel good after you're done.

Latin is not a difficult language as you may think.

Why Learn Latin ??

If we, living in the 21st century, learn Latin, we will be able to understand the minds and souls of people who lived in the first century. Great Latin Authors such as Seneca have written numerous deep philosophical texts. It's surely a shame if you never ever read atleast one of their extraordinary oeuvres.

Since it's no more spoken language (except for some speeches by Pope), the purpose of this CC is not to converse in Latin but to learn the language so that we can understand the original latin texts written by Caesar or Ovidius and even analyse their texts.

I'm sure there are many people who would like to know more about Latin and some may even be die hard Latin lovers like me.

I myself have studied Latin for around 6 years and it's my passion. I've always admired this language!! Latin literature is very much interesting and unique. Once you start reading, you won't able to stop for sure!

If you learn Latin, you'll understand many phrases or words in French, English, Italian, Spanish and other languages. You also learn a lot about Roman and Greek history.

We use sooo many English words which has its origin from Latin:

etc - et cetera

region - regio

familiar - familiaris

calamity - calamitas

form - forma

noble - nobilis

people - populus

Purpose of this CC

Depending on the members interest we can do the following things

Disscussions about:

- Literature of Ovidius, Horacius, Caesar, Catullus, Cicero, Seneca, Vergilius

This is of course a very small list. There are many more brilliant authors, the above mentioned are the ones I've read and analysed.

- Roman & Greek history

- Greek Mythology

We can learn the language:

- Grammar, words, expressions etc

Personal Suggestions:

- Ovidius : Metamorphosis

-Vergilius: Aeneis

Seneca: Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium

Dont worry !! You don't need to know Latin to discuss Latin literature!!

Good translations will be provided !!

Please PM me if you want to join this CC!!

We'll start with some grammar !!

We'll be learning words and grammar at the same time, but for the beginning, a bit of grammar!!
Chapter 1 - The Latin Alphabet
Pronunciation of the alphabets - some exceptions
a: ah
au: (the "ou" of OUCH)
e: eh
i: ee
x: ks
z: ts
Chapter 2 - Nouns - Singular
There are three genders for the nouns.
- masculine
- feminine
-neuter
Singular and Plural forms are there, too.
There are different declensions. That means there are different ways of declining a noun.
Singular
First Declension: a-Declension:
all nouns with ending A
Nominative: rosa
Genitive: rosae
Dative: rosae
Accusative: rosam
Ablative: rosa
Second Declension: o-Declension:
all nouns with ending US or UM
Nominative: dominus
Genitive: domini
Dative: domino
Accusative: dominum
Ablative: domino
dominus means: lord, master
OR
Nominative: templum
Genitive: templi
Dative: templo
Accusative: templum
Ablative:templo
templum means: temple
Third Declension
all other nouns
Nominative: consul
Genitive: consulis
Dative: consuli
Accusative: consulem
Ablative: consule
consul means: counsel
as you can see, nouns with endings us or um belong to the same declension group. But they have different endings. Therefore, you can assume these as two different groups of declensions even though they officially belong to the same. I myself don't know why exactly these two belong to the same group. But remember, all nouns (with few exceptions) which end with um will be declined like templum.
And all nouns which end with us will be declined like dominus.
To decline the nouns, figure out the declension group first!
Then, eliminate the nominative ending and add the pink endings for the other cases!!
(If its not clear, do ask !! 😳)
Different cases have different functions.
For example:
I eat Ice cream. --> here, ice cream is the Object.
My Ice cream is delicious. --> Here ice cream is the subject.
We will discuss the functions of the different cases more detailed, later !!
First Homework
Study the 4 words and its declensions properly!!
Try to learn it by heart. But dont worry, you ll learn it in no time !!
To which declension group do the following words belong to?
Decline all the words (Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Ablative)!!
Guess what these words could mean!!
1) populus
2) mercator
3) amica
you can also abbreviate the cases:
Nom/Gen/Dat/Acc/Abl 😳

Oooopss !! noooo!! lolzzz !! The rest of the alphabets are the same !!! the way of writing is the same, like in English, so thats clear !!
ks and ts are totally different !! lolzz !!
x - like the normal x you pronounce
and z --> not the zero "z", but a more sharper z , as in ... tssss !!
in English there is nothing to decline
but in Latin you need to declinw words
I eat ice cream
Ice cream is delicious
you can see here that in the first phrase Ice cream is WHAT you eat, i.e. its an object, the "I" is the subject.
in the seond phrase, Ice cream is the subject.
hope its clear !! other wise do tell !!😳😳😳😳
yepp, each noun has these 5 forms, you call them cases.
We ll have to discuss that properly, but I can tell you what its about
Nominative means the word is the subject:
ice cream is delicious --> if you translate it into Latin, you will have to take the nominative form for ice cream
i eat ice cream --> here ice cream is the object, it is called accusative object, hence you will have to take the accusative form of ice cream when you translate this sentence
similarly, "I" will have the nominative form since "I" is the subject of the sentence !!
hope you understand !!!!
ive updated the post again regarding the declensions
yayyyyy!! the first ones correct !!
amica means friend, a girl (amicus would be a friend who's a boy)
mercator - in English merchant
