Yesterday, we informed you that the Government of Pakistan had cleared K. Asif's evergreen classic MUGHAL-E-AZAM. It is now learnt that Akbar Khan's historical TAJ MAHAL, released a few months ago in India, has also been approved by the Government of Pakistan for exhibition in the country. Although Akbar hasn't got the censor certificate yet, the film has been okayed in principle.
"That's true," Akbar Khan sounds elated when this writer called to verify the development, "It's a great beginning. A move like this opens the doors of a new territory for Indian film-makers." Akbar is still undecided about the release strategy. "I'm keeping the options open. I've received a few offers, but I would choose someone [local distributor] who can assure me a proper release in Pakistan," he smiles.
Meanwhile, a percentage of the revenue generated from the Pakistan theatres will be donated to Pakistan's President Relief Fund. Also, Akbar Khan is planning to have a lavish premiere of the film at one of the key cities of Pakistan.
Akbar is also planning to re-release TAJ MAHAL in India. "The release strategy was wrong earlier. I wasn't happy with the way the film was distributed, hence I decided to withdraw the film on my own," Akbar laments, "But I haven't lost hope yet. I am planning to re-release the film all over again."
