Another Great Musical Album From The Great Trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

'Karthik Calling Karthik is a complete package'

(L to R) Ehsaan, Shankar and Loy
Ever since they started working together, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have always given a fresh sound to Bollywood. Their fame grew widespread with the tremendous success of Dil Chahta Hai, which placed them among the top and most sought-after composers of Bollywood.

Thereafter there was no looking back as they delivered one hit after another and were recognised for their effort with a National award for Kal Ho Na Ho.

Bringing their unique flavour to their music, each one of them is an in a different form of music. Fusing their vast experiences and individualities, they bring in something new on record every time they make music. The music of their latest film Karthik Calling Karthik is already a chartbuster and is being lapped up by music aficionados eagerly.

Shankar and Ehsaan spoke to us about making music for Karthik Calling Karthik, Loy's daughter Alyssa Mendonca's debut on the album, and much more.

You seem to be Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar's favourite music composers. How was it working with Excel entertainment this time around?
Shankar: Excel Entertainment keeps working with new talents, but we don't want them to change the music directors (laughs). It's always been a pleasure working with Farhan's production but this film is very special for us. When Vijay narrated the script to us, we were excited and very clear about the path that we were going to take in composing its music. So far, I feel we have been able to do justice to the music of the film. We are glad that it has been well received by the audience.

While being narrated the ,script what was the first thought that crossed your mind about the music of the Karthik Calling Karthik?
Shankar: I think when you first come across any director, the positive vibes that you get from him is something on which music is created. Moreover, whenever we have worked with Farhan Akhtar, we have experienced those special vibes and created some fantastic music which can be heard even in Karthik Calling Karthik.

Karthik Calling Karthik is essentially a romantic thriller. What efforts went into the music of the film to give the feel of a thriller?
Ehsaan: If you hear the album, you will realise that we have incorporated various genres in the album, be it Sufi, a club song or a sad song; the album is a package in itself. It has everything. Now as far as the thrill factor is concerned, the feel can be gauged from the background score of the film, which has an edgy factor to it.

Which would be your pick from the album?
Ehsaan: That would have to be 'Uff Teri Adaa'. I am not surprised to see this song doing so well because I knew from the beginning that this was going to be a chartbuster.

Loy's daughter Alyssa Mendonca made her debut as a singer with Karthik Calling Karthik.
Shankar:
Alyssa has amazing talent, but before taking up the mic she was a bit nervous so I told her to take it easy and everything else will fall in place. I told her to record as if she was recording the final version of the song and she did! That time itself I knew that I would retain her voice in the final version of the song. Although Alyssa is shy and an introvert, she is very bright and talented.

After Loy's daughter, can we expect your kids taking to the mic soon?
Shankar:
They will, but right now, they are in the learning stage. They often keep composing and singing, but we want them to struggle. We don't want to make them feel that just being the kid of an established artist would make things easy for them. We would rather let them achieve success through their struggle.

'Jaane Yeh Kya Hua" will not instantly catch a listener. It takes a few listenings. But yes its a good song. It was good to see KK singing outside Bhatt camp. 😊

i agree with you completely! my friend recommended me to listen to this song, i started to like it after 2 or 3 listenings.

Yeah, strangely KK has some connection with them, he can do great singing surely. i liked his song "Dil Ibadat" from Tum Mile. the film was totally crap. but the songs are excellent!

^^^

Well that's the pity in Bollywood. Many good songs get lost in the wilderness if the film does not work.
