Odissi is also a beautiful dance form - saw one at an indian cultural show in the mid-west.
I would like to see someone do this form in DID.

Sometimes to save ones own contestant the judges point out flaws in others...Ameeth was a classic example. I do think, that not only in DID but in India somehow our own classical dances are not given their due. We appreciate contemporary inspite of our limited knowlegde for it but when Nikki performed the classical piece there were limited claps. I am not saying DID doesn't bring in classical but it surely is very limited. I hope to see more Infian, be it classical or folk dance rahter than Bollywoodish dance. Western classical, contemporary is also fine as that also takes effort to execute...but I am not a big fan of Bollywoodish dance..

I am with you DC on this...Bollywood especially tapori style which is just a copy cat of movie-songs steps no substance..😳
I love classical be it Indian-Asian or Western, Latin does not matter...Whole lot of training, hard work and efforts goes into them 👏

I always thought the themes in DID are lacking. They represent a very myopic perspective on dance. Instead of Bollywood, comedy, etc I feel they should have the following type of themes that will most showcase dance better . This will also help us see their versatility, test caliber and compare them in similar styles.

1) Classical dance- Indian
2) Folk dance - Indian
3) Folk dance - International
4) Ballroom dance
5) Latin dance
6) Street dancing
7) Modern/Contemporary
8) Night Club/Energy
9) Jive, Swing etc
10) Showbiz (Jazz/Broadway)

and if we dare raise eyebrows and make people fall of their seats, belly and pole dancing. 😆

RTH some folks will still feel salsa, ballroom dancing, contemporary, jive...all fall in the same category...and will blame Terrence for showing same type dance...its hard to keep all happy...

You have a very valid point there. Many people tend to lump all western styles as one. However, if all teams have to do the same theme no one can blame Terence. If everyone has ballroom one week, and latin next and contemporary another, people cannot complain. Although, I know some people will always complain about TL or someone else no matter what. 😊

Just to clarify the differences for people who were interested -

Ballroom dancing is styles like foxtrot, waltz, tango, quickstep etc.
Latin dancing is styles like salsa, lambada, samba, bolero etc. Some Latin styles are considered ballroom, however, Latin is usually a different genre of its own for differing movements and style of music.
Jive styles are rock and roll, influenced couples dancing style. They include swing, lindy hop, swing, charleston etc. The music is more quick and lively, and the dancing involves a lot of quickstepping, fast body motions and quick movement across the floor space.
Contemporary dance is a retake on classical styles like ballet and ballroom. Classical movements have been adapted to create whole body movements. There is a lot of interpretative movement and expressionism. Usually the dance is done bare footed.

Great List, hope someone's taking notes
And falling off seats- they did try it once !!
Now that you mentioned Latin - Lambada, there is an Indian version of the lambada dance - would be very interesting if they integrate that with the Latin one ..
That would be a good fusion - not someone using fake mudras wearing a bharatnatyam costume swaying to a la 'desi gal ' music ... (sorry about the sarcasm can't help it)

Sochna kya jo bhi hoga dekha jayega. It would be interesting to see someone dance Lambada to that. Actually fusion or jugalbandi is a good idea too. It will put the creativity of the masters to the test as well as how well a dancer can do justice to multiple forms in one dance.

One a side note. Of course pole dancing is associated with strippers. Pole dancing does not always have to be cheap and slutty. Perhaps Remo did not know that. The 2009 Miss Pole dancing's video on youtube was quite popular last year, if anyone has seen it. The winner was Felix who is an amazing pole dancer. It could be a bit racy for Indian audiences, but actually the whole act was mesmerizingly done. Many people were amazed at how well pole dancing can be done.

Similarly to compare sensual vs cheap people can check Alizee's performances of her hit song 'Lolita' and then the stripper Decibelles take on it. Both found on youtube, of course the latter being the edited youtube safe version. Decibele mimics Alizee a lot, but you can clearly see the difference between well performed and sleazy between the two.

I agree about the Ameeth episode, thats what annoyed me about the judge, it wasn't that Ameeth excelled at the form but, the fact was that the judge was biased despite shedding tears for classical dance.
Bollywood classical dancers like Hema Malini, Vyjayanthimala, Padmini, Sandhya, (from mom's gen
) Madhuri have some good dance numbers to their credit which could be used.
