DID Movers and Shakers- No takers!

For all that DID is about - movers and shakers...
It is sad that there are no takers for Indian classical music - take a look at how many folk/classical dances were choreographed vs the 'bolly-holly' (made up word - u get the point).

Then again you have a judge who claims to be a classical expert and whenever she speaks I'm sure the likes of Birju Maharaj, Mallika Sarabai, Adyar Lakshman must cringe in their seats ...?
It would be nice for a judge who claims to be pro-classical and sheds tears for its cause to
actually do a formal piece of classical dance with proper mudras and posture. (no re-mix pls)

That being said about how classical dance is being pushed into oblivion, here are my thoughts:

  • While we here in the US try to retain our cultural dance/music identity, it is considered non-classy back in India - isn't it sad?

  • Wouldn't it be worthwhile to give classical dance a stage it deserves- I know there's TRP and all that?

  • Why not have a mandatory classical round - loads of films have some neat classicals and why not invite the 'forgotten' rather 'anonymous' exponents of dance alongside a bollywood celebrity. I would get to know some of these dance gurus too...

I agree that they should have a specific classical round, like they have that for the musical show SRGMP. I wish they have specific rounds for each week - classical, comedy, bollywood, disco, contemporary, and so on... But anyway, the classical forms are more prominent in the South and therefore the dance reality shows in the South, especially in Kerala, give more importance to classical dance items. But then most of the trained and famous classical dancers are from the South too, and since they have regional shows to focus on, they dont give much importance to the national shows.. And sadly in DID, the classical dancers dont gain many votes and tend to be eliminated prematurely, while those with no classical background will be the finalists.. So the problem is the show's format itself...

I believe that the reason that classical dances didnt get accepted with much enthusiasm by DID viewers is because they are used to seeing more of classical and regional dances and so they get excited to see something that is out of that, which will be innovative and appealing to the viewers more. That's why people liked Prince so much last season even though he did the same kind all the time, as people like those kind of dance forms - thanks to Michael Jackson videos! People in India are not exposed to contemporary dance forms very well, and that's why they dont understand the different kinds of contemporary dance and so they dont value the skills of a contemporary dancer as much as they do for break dancers... They see break dance moves as much harder than classical and contemporary dance moves, but infact it's the other way around...

Nicely said Akanna ..

The problem is the bias against a certain form, while we think exposure to contemporary forms on Indian media is limited, it's the other way around. With no parental controls, all channels are everyone's business and they know more of contemporary than we here would ever know.
Again bollywood has the most takers, it is the classical form which is looked upon with disdain and that's fine. A lil exposure to classical will be worthwhile, and not asking for too much perhaps in the earlier rounds where there is no public voting
There are some really good classical dances from bollywood and while the South has Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi et al, North too has Kathak n Odissi - no dearth there.

^^ Yes SB, I agree with you... Sad but true, that our classical forms are thought of and valued at a much lesser value by our own folks... Even in families, parents like to train their kids more in modern dance forms in order to push them to participate in the reality shows... So I think the shows should make a difference by showing how much they like to see and appreciate classical dancers, which is what is happening in some top reality shows in the South - both music and dance, so they are making the younger generation to value the good old traditions and culture...
Also many people think classical dance means Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, and both are from the South. Also Mohiniyattam and Kathakali are also from the South, and there are so many established institutions in the South that continue to provide traning for these forms. Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri and Sattriya are also there among the classical dances of India, but I dont know how much recognition these forms are getting in their own regions... I didnt see people doing Manipuri or Odissi in the DID audition, whereas there were more people doing Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, etc... And sadly none of them got in except Kruti and Nikki...
Yes, many young people look up to Bollywood movies for dance types and assume those are the dance types of India! The same way how they managed to remove our traditional clothes from almost all movies now and replaced them with Western clothes, they have managed to remove our classical dance forms too!!

Amrita did a classical thing remember? That's when Geeta eliminated her.

I think it was a folk dance from Orissa, i guess. But atleast an Indian art-form. Well, Amrita deserved it. Geeta made a huge mistake by picking Sruthi instead.

Yes, Amrita did a regional folk dance and then didnt get selected by Geeta! I would like to see some Kathak, Manipuri, Odissi, etc dances on DID, since I get a lot of chances to see the South Indian classical dance forms often...
