Here's my 2 paise on Debu's performance, w.r.t. Sangeeta's analysis.

I listened to Debu's song again today and my husband played it on the keyboard for me at the same range that Debu was singing. You are right that the song goes from "ma" to "komal ga" and we believe Debu also was singing it from "ma" to "komal ga". When we tried playing it on the keyboard with "ga" instead of "komal ga", and it sounded quite awful, and that's not how I believe Debu sang it.

Like you said, the song is very fast, and it is difficult to keep breath. Debu had to end the lines abruptly to keep up with the tempo, and that made it sound a little "careless", giving the effect that he might have been a little offtune.
