The famous five take stock of 2009 as they usher in the New Year
2009 was quite a roller coaster year for television. While those who thought themselves 'invincible' were brought down to ground zero, never-heard-before names called the shots and how. TV rules were rewritten and the old guards (saving a few) gave way to the new lot. Younger, fresher ideas translated into real shows while reality TV moved away from the song and dance routine. TV has come of age, they said.
In more ways than one, 2009 belonged to reality television. Viewers wanted to get real, they wanted makers and channels to get real. Cardboard sets made place for real, gritty settings, make-believe gave way to real issues. In short, the year changed a lot of things in Indian television, including viewer preferences, leaders, content and celebrities.
TellyChakkar spoke to some of these names who made it big in 2009 to find out their recipe for success in the year that saw the entire world come down on its knees due to global recession. They also spoke about their plans for ushering in 2010.
Karan Kundra:Actor, currently seen in Bayttab Dil Ki Tamanna Hai Karan comes from a Punjabi business family. He quit his studies in the US midway to pursue acting. He got shortlisted for a Balaji Telefilms'serial when Ekta Kapoor spotted him on a social networking site. Karan's debut serial Kitni Mohabbat Hai climbed up the TRP charts and popularity kissed his feet. "2009 will always be special because my first serial went on air this year. Usually, a daily soap needs some time to take off and then goes on to run for years. But Kitni Mohabbat Hai was different. It scaled new heights of popularity and my character, Arjun Punj became a household name within a few months. And in just one year, the show achieved what most could not even in double the time.
"But, I also feel that I have been extremely lucky in getting opportunities. After Kitni Mohhabat Hai got over, I thought of spending time with my family in the US, but before I could bat an eyelid, Bayttab Dil Ki Tamanna Hai was offered to me and I could not refuse it. If you look at my two characters, they are diametrically opposite. Arjun Punj was a suave businessman, a woman-hater, while Veeru is a roadside Romeo. "I have got tremendous adulation from people all over the country, especially women. And that feels nice, considering Arjun Punj was anti-women.
"In 2010, I definitely see myself working in more quality shows. I am getting a number of offers from different production houses, but I will not rush things. On the personal front, I share a very special relationship with Kritika Kamra ' my co-star in Kitni Mohabbat Hai. Am I dating her? I am not but, I must confess there is no smoke without fire."
