...Mentally challenged/handicapped characters. Do they know how stupid they look? Being mentally challenged/handicapped doesn't equate to acting like a complete douchebag. Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgan, and now Shahrukh Khan. When I caught the preview of MNIK on Star Plus, I first thought it was a biography on Shahrukh Khan, until I saw the word 'autism' stamped on an ID card or something. I don't normally judge a book by its cover, but let's not fool ourselves. We all know I'm anything BUT self-righteous, especially when it comes to Bollywood. I'm so sick of this manipulative tripe, that I feel like my brain will implode into a disgusting pile of goo.

Am I suppose to laugh at mentally challenged people, or feel compassion and sympathetic?

What a sham, and an insult to mentally challenged people. If this sort of acting was permitted in Hollywood, HR, AD, and all these actors aspiring to make complete assess of themselves would bag the Razzie Awards.

If you want someone to play such a challenging character, pick an actor, NOT a superstar.

Ugh.

9/11 is a sensitive issue, but unfortunately, Bollywood has used it as manipulative tool to squeeze emotions out of their audiences. I'm tired of bitching about Bollywood being incapable of making thought provoking films, that deal with mature, sensitive and controversial issues.

Right now, my plight is with the projection of mentally handicapped people in Bollywood films. I wonder if SRK knows what Autism is.

Don't get me wrong, no harm in making the movies on such tough topics, but next time they want to do so, pick an actor not a star!

*edit

I saw MNIK preview and its just not clicking with me. It feels so repititive that it looked like a mix of Koi Mil Gaya and New York and whatever movie has terrorism and mentally challenged characters. Like, seriously, how much more of this stuff already???
Now, coming back to why such things are repeated again and again in movies? I think, the time these things started to "sell" by tearing up the audiences and the characters gaining their sympathy, directors who just wanted to make money adapted the idea also and made their own versions of it (Auro from Paa, Koi Mil Gaya's jadoo or whatever his name was, and many more that I dont even know....recently SRK). I would agree with you rox that the characters are merely depicted and acted out well, more so because of the lack of knowledge and research behind their development. Neither the actor knows or the director knows what are they actually portraying and I dont think they even care. *rolls eyes*
But, you know neither does the mass portion of the audience wants any serious crap thrown towards them...no one wants to see the reality! Just throw in some spice, a few (many, actually) songs, and an emotional plot and viola, you've a hit on your way. So, in a way directors are also influenced by whatever "sells" with their audience except for the ones who dont sacrifice their own credibility with the fear of loosing out the mass support of the audience.

SRK is autistic in the movie, at least that is what the promo shows.

As for the topic, I feel like if they act well, I don't see anything wrong with portraying mentally challenged people as they are being talked about more without being a taboo. My little cousin who is mentally disabeled loves watching Koi Mil Gaya over and over again, and I don't see anything wrong with superstars acting such roles, this way the audience is even larger.

The original plot line claimed that his character was Autistic, but the fans were chanting otherwise. In the preview, however, the police discover his Id, or something along those lines, and it has the words 'Autism' written on it. If that's the case, then his projection is already inaccurate. Although varying degrees, aren't Autistics mostly withdrawn to themselves?
