The renowned director, however, also mentioned why he wouldn't be directing the sequel, "The reason behind not directing the sequel is because the sequel needs somebody to come with a new take and spirit. Also, I am already contracted to direct other movies."
But when quizzed about who would take the place of the legendary Amrish Puri in the movie, Shekhar said, " I can say that the biggest problem was replacing Amrish Puri, because his character was so strong. He made much more of the character that was not written, to be the main character in the film.We still haven't zeroed down on an actor who will replace Amrish in the sequel; however, I had to compensate a lot while writing the story by creating a character that could come up to the expectations of Amrish Puri and his performance."
While Anil Kapoor and Sridevi are confirmed to reprise their roles in the sequel, who would play the role of Mogambo, which the late Amrish Puri essayed, is yet to be decided. However, a source close to the director revealed that Salman Khan was being zeroed on to play a negative character in the film. "Boney Kapoor, who will be producing the film has zeroed in on Anurag Basu to direct the sequel to Mr. India. He admires Anurag's type of cinema, but because Anurag is busy with his current project Kites, he hasn't issued a public statement on the matter. Also, Mr India 2 is not going to be as old-school as its predecessor; the film will have an all-new take and direction to it, that being the reason behind approaching Salman for the negative role in the film."
Considering Salman's closeness to the Kapoors and his eagerness to do something different all the time, he hasn't rejected the offer as such. This being the reason behind Salman's surprised expression when he was quizzed whether he was a part of Mr. India 2 at a recent event in the city. Salman retorted, "I am here to talk about Veer. When the time is right, I will discuss my other projects, soon."
Boney Kapoor, on the other hand has confirmed that he will not make his films without Salman. He even went on to add that he is Salman's new Sooraj Barjatya, after Salman's Wanted smashed all box office records this year, and gave Boney Kapoor's production house a new lease of life.
