Kareena Kapoor says it aptly depicts theme of 'Kurbaan'

Kareena Kapoor says there is nothing "vulgar" about her backless shot being used for the publicity posters of forthcoming release "Kurbaan", an intense thriller about terrorism. In fact, she says, it subtly reveals a lot about the story.

"This shot of me in a backless posture and Saif with a wound on his chest tell so much about the film's theme," Kareena told IANS.

"There is love, passion and violence - all combined in here and what better way than to show it through a single still? You too would agree that there is nothing sleazy or vulgar about it. Knowing the sensibilities of Karan Johar (producer) and Rensil D'Silva (director), that's the least one could have expected," she added.

Kareena said that after Geet in "Jab We Met", her character of Avantika in "Kurbaan" will make people sit up and take notice.

"The girl's role has a lot of edge in 'Kurbaan', something which starts becoming more and more visible as the film unfolds. In any case the film is not one of those cliched love stories. Every character has quite a few layers to it and Avantika, the character I play, is no exception. She is quite pivotal to 'Kurbaan'," she said.

Kareena plays a professor in "Kurbaan" who gets married to her colleague, played by Saif Ali Khan. They move to New York after marriage, but as a series of events unfold she finds herself into a vortex of danger and intrigue.

She further realises that she is a pawn in a huge game and no one could be trusted.

"What made this role special is the fact that I play this young beautiful professor who is quite normal. She reacts to terrorism for the first time and life is never the same again for her," she said.

"Actually if you ask me, then technically 'Kurbaan' is the story of this girl. She is the light of the screen. I am sure people will cry with Avantika...so strong is her characterisation," the actress said.

After "Jab We Met", Kareena was seen in "Main Aurr Mrs Khanna", "Kambakkht Ishq", "Tashan" and "Golmaal Returns". And except "Golmaal Returns", none of the films did well at the box office.

Kareena is delighted about the prospects of audiences seeing her in a different light after the film and says it is not a frothy romance drama.

"'Kurbaan' has a deep-rooted love story to it, but it is not a frothy romantic film that we are time and again exposed to. The love story is much deeper here. There is a definite meaning, purpose and reason to it. Also, the film is quite powerful in its own way since it's the voice of moderate Islam," she said.

The film, which also stars Vivek Oberoi, Om Puri, Kirron Kher and Dia Mirza, is releasing Nov 20.

I am not going to comment on the backless poster since I don't care for it much, but one thing is for sure, Bollywood has certainly outdone even Hollywood with the subjects of terrorism and such, particularly 9/11. They all say that they create such products to make a difference, but obviously end up ridiculing such sensitive matters. The past films have proven it and I am sure this one will be no exception. When will the realization occur that maybe it's time to move on to various other issues? Why not create more films that deal with your own homeland issue as I am sure there are many to pick from.

Whatever.

All these masaala waali commercial films attempting to create a 'change' and portray the 'voice' is nothing but embarrassment at the end of the day as I am sure none of these directors actually go out and research regarding the issue.

👏👏👏
It's all about making money. Do they honestly believe they are bringing a 'change'. If they do, they are delusional.
I think they actually only say these things to market their products, nothing else.

I think the good Indian films about terrorism happened a while ago - like Black Friday or even a Dil Se. Of the recent lot I like Mumbai Meri Jaan - though the perspective is different.

All of these films were based in India and I think that was the key. When directors take on "global terrorism" they bite off more than they can chew and the film looks half-baked or superficial like New York. I am willing to give this film a chance - maybe I will be proven wrong.

I agree I dont understand what the fascination is with 9/11 - why cant the top production houses make films connected to terrorism in India ? we have enough such problems on our own. But its more glamorous and lucrative to make films on 9/11. For example New Yor k - what big difference did it make ? nothing except having people justify terrorism and feel sorry for a person who would have killed thousands because he was wronged.
Even such films about our neighboring countries that would affect India would make more sense. Dil Se was a prime example but that bombed spectacularly (pun intended :P)

I couldn't agree with you both more. I think every few years bollywood tends to go through a certain phase where several directors come out with films on the same topic, rather than actually trying to comprehend the sensitivity of the issue they tend to be tangled up trying to prove how their film is better. It takes me back to an interview I read of Dharmendra when the Bhagat Singh films came out one after another, he had clearly come out and said that his film was beyond par because the information he collected had come straight from Bhagat Singh's brother.
It boggles me how these directors don't even do the full required research before making a movie on such a sensitive subject, they basically feed the public whatever they weave in that mind of theirs, it's clearly sad.

the posters may not be " vulgar"...but well,m dheere dheere losing confidence about this movie is about as i see the promos...it seems clear it masala first and content later...
i agree with zainab, its time we move on to issues concerning our own country rather than those islam-indian things, they just ruin the whole sensitivity of the issue, just like a certain fanna and ney york..

The marketing of Kurbaan is good. The poster is appealing because it's shocking....
The post 9/11 theme is sensitive and touchy that's why they chose it. The same for MNIK.
Just like in Europe whenever a film deals with the World war II or some piano it gets all the awards (The Piano, The Pianist, The Schindler List, Life's beautiful...), so I guess it's the same for a theme like Kurbaan, it's done to make people think that they do intense and awards worthy cinema...and Dharma prod makes movies for NRI and western (ized) people in general.....Kjo makes money in India but also abroad. Kjo has his own audience abroad so if it is too masala they won't like it, if he adds some western touch it's good for both of his audience.
