well maybe your definition of overrated is different to mine, i don't term someone "overrated" just by how much the media pays attention to them..

Agree. I don't think someone getting best actor at Filmfare makes them overrated. Those awards have zero credibility anyway. To me, the overrated ones are the ones who always get praised by the critics for being the unquestioned gods of acting, but don't do anything for me personally. In that vein-
Rahul Bose. I thought he got outacted by the female leads in Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, 15 Park Avenue and Chameli. He was OK in Pyar Ke Side Effects. Not amazing. He gets too much credit for his choice of films.
Abhay Deol - I don't get his appeal at all. Another guy who chooses good films and some of that goodwill undeservedly rubs off on him.
Mr. and Mrs. Iyer was the first Konkona film I saw, and she knocked my socks off with her performance, but in all the movies I've seen subsequently (Life in a Metro, Aaja Nachle, Omkara, 15 Park Avenue, Luck By Chance), I have found her competent, but not amazing. It pains me to say this, because I like her very much, but she needs to do something extraordinary soon, or I'll have to lower my opinion of her.
Aamir Khan - I will probably get flamed for saying this, but IMO Aamir has perfected one kind of role - the lazy, somewhat rude urban dude - and he uses variations of this persona in movie after movie (DCH, RDB, parts of Fanaa, and by the looks of it, 3 Idiots). He needs to do something way outside of his comfort zone.

^Your list is very similar to mine, Konkona is being a one trick pony.she's been playing the same role over and over again for the last few years.. i seriously don't find her all that great..

Bollywood has actors that have a certain reputation, some are known to be "good actors" and that reputation gives them a lot of leeway when it comes to performances..they can afford to have like many mediocre performances but they will always be known as a "good actor" ..

Yeah, naive-small-town-girl-in-the-big city has become Konkona's pet screen act. She needs to do something radically different soon .

This is true for celebrities from all fields I think. Their media image is determined by what they do in the first couple of years of their stardom, and after that it is impossible to shake off the tag the media slaps on them. I see this happening to sportspersons all the time. They get tagged by the "good sport" or "bad sport" label, and then, the "good" ones never get called out for their transgressions, and the "bad" ones get skewered by the media if they so much as place a foot wrong.
I think people tend to be too generous to the indie crowd, and too harsh on the mainstream ones generally. Doing a reasonable job with a good script and director is not that hard. I've seen even the ones who allegedly can't act, like Ash for instance, do decently with good directors like Rituparno Ghosh and Mani Ratnam. If those were the only kinds of movies she ever did, noone would ever have discovered her limitations as an actress.

I don't completely agree about Konkona just doing that one thing. I think perhaps Luck By Chance and Page 3 qualify for that, but in LBC she wasn't just naive. Apart from that I think her roles in Aaja Nachle (which I don't think was all that bad a film), Omkara, Mixed Doubles, Traffic Signal were all quite varied.

I do agree that sometimes people are too hard on big budget films and all indie films are definitely not excellent. One example that comes to my mind immediately is Ramchand Pakistani.

And yes often a few good performances are able to tide some actors over some very bad films. I think actors like Kareena, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan fall under that category. While with someone like Aishwarya even critics don't move beyond discussing how great she looks and despite some good performances she doens't get a lot of credit.

I think Life in a Metro has a few shades of the "straight arrow learning lessons about the complicated morality of city life" to it, particularly the gay subplot. I'd forgotten about Mixed Doubles. Loved that movie, but mostly for Ranveer Shorey. Now there's a guy that's underrated. I guess he doesn't get the same respect as other indie stars because he does a lot of comedy.

^Oh yes totally agree about Ranvir Shorey. He was especially very good in Mithya and Khosla ka Ghosla. But he has mostly been seen as a bit player in multistarrer comedies so he doesn't really get all that much appreciation. I liked him in Mixed Doubles too.
