No, I want Santu to stick to sarees....Santu is very young as it is, don't want her to look even younger....besides I think sarees look more elegant. DM is a rustic, traditional guy, I don't think he'll take kindly to his wife wearing salwars and they live in a village too.

Yep, Santu should be in a sari, but no palloo over her head.

But she can definitely wear salwar when they will be off in Switzerland for their honeymoon, that time DM wont mind her wearing it.

Santu would have to wear the pallu over her head because being the daughter-in-law of the house is combined with not being the eldest lady in the house.

Vasudha-Baa, Meghna and Surekha are all married women, but also the eldest ladies in their homes. They all have the option of keeping their pallu down. But Baa is older-generation, so the pallu stays up. Meghna and Surekha are a generation younger, and reasonably modern besides. So the pallu stays down.

Taru is the daughter of the house and believed to be unmarried. So the pallu stays down. Even if she were known to be married, as the seniormost lady in her husband's home, her pallu could stay down no matter where she was staying.

Kadambari is quite modern, and moreover has doting parents-in-law. So the pallu stayed up for the first day after marriage to show respect to Meghna and Rasik, and only afterwards did she make the transition to head uncovered, no sari, salwar-kameez.

Santu could stop covering her head. Baa wouldn't mind. But all the villagers who know her and whose opinion matters greatly to her would think she had lost decorum. She needs to get educated before changing her sartorial style. Setting aside a rather basic rural tradition while remaining an un-urbane illiterate rustic would leave her 'naa idhhar ki naa udhhar ki'.

Leela, welcome to Bandini forum. You have some very good points about customs and village tradition and all. You are right. But if DM wishes the pallu to be off Santu's head, then nothing else matters. The villagers would respect DM's preference and Santu will do whatever DM wishes. She is just so adorable.

Thanks for the welcome, Mallika.😊
I don't think we should wait for DM to suggest it. The man still wears a dhoti when he goes abroad. <LOL>
Also, he might feel it would be disrespectful to Baa and Bapuji if Santu were to keep the pallu down in the house. Outside the house, in the absence of family-elders, she did go once with the pallu down and looking prettily modish. Remember the Birwa occasion?
I just think she should get educated first so her angootha everywhere doesn't make us cringe. Then she and Baa and Bapuji can talk, they can tell her that as she's like their daughter, there's no reason for the pallu to stay up. And hurrah, the pallu can come down. DM won't mind it that way. It's only otherwise that he might not like it.

Hehhe, I know, DM wore dhoti to Antwerp😆😆 Too funny. We will see what happens with Santu. Maybe Megs might suggest the idea, DM respects Meg, then he won't mind if Santu follows Meg's advice.
