Since there's a general curiosity on what the movie's about, I found Rensil's interview where he answers that question. Is it like Fanna, is it like New York? Well read on and make your own judgment.
Excerpt from Rensil's Interview

What's the film about?
Well, it is a cross genre ... it is a love story, it's a thriller and it has political comment on global terrorism and the identity of Muslims in the modern world. It is a comment on Islam - the liberal and the conservative elements of Islam. I think there was enough meat for it to absorb me completely and also to my mind it should cross borders, it shouldn't just only be an Indian film. I think it is a film that can make its way through the global market.
Do you have a favorite scene?
The script reaches a point were there is a debate in a classroom between the moderate voices of Islam and some pretty radical voices from the West. Where issues like 9-11 and Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq are seen in a very heated debate where hopefully I have put forward the points. It sees it through the prism of the US using the first invasion of Iraq, with Bush Senior, as a means to further their arms deal and the inclusion of the CIA into what is now the Mujahideen, right from the time of the Soviet invasion. The CIA's intervention to create the Mujahideen, and now the Mujahideen striking back at the US and their interests; a lot of issues I think that might not have been dealt with in previous mainstream Hindi Cinema - I hope to at least address some of it. I don't think it would be totally good to say I have resolved it or anything, but at least I have nudged the mind of the viewer more into that direction.

Kurbaan is its own story.
And it has an excellent star cast that is more than capable of delivering.
Saif, Kareena, Vivek, Om Puri, Kiron Kher.
It doesnt get any better.

You're welcome!

Yeah i was kinda bothered about those supposed "similarities" with fanaa as well, but really...its not liek fanaa. Its a completely different concept and idea.
I'm definitely looking forward to Kurbaan!!
Yeah I used that avie, haha. It was far too tempting.

Similarities will arise due to the theme as well. But I'm confident about this one!
Fanaa's downside was KUNAL KOHLI.
New York was a great movie, but didnt have quite as strong a cast as it should have with the exception of Irfan Khan.
I dont see any such loopholes wiht Kurbaan.
Hahah! Well I'm glad i used it as well, lol

I think New York was an ok to bad movie. The acting wasn't the only problem. The film had way too many plot-holes and dealt with the serious subjects very superficially. The characters weren't written well at all. The acting was just another flaw, and not the only one.

Fanaa was horrendous. It didn't even pretend to deal with its serious backdrop unlike New York where atleast Kabir Khan tried. It was just another love story and that too not a very good one.

As for Kurbaan, I guess we should wait and see what happens. Though I am keeping my expectations very low.

Seriously, Fanaa was cringeworthy.

I mean if I 'm laughing when a character in the movie dies, then there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with that movie. Not just that, but my cousins and I rewound that part where rishi falls off the cliff over and over again just for laughs.

I wish I was in a better mood while watching Fanaa. I might have had a laugh and enjoyed it more. I just ended up getting a headache. And that song with the tongue twister got on my nerves. 🤢 Especially since it came during the supposedly serious part of the film.

LMAO! I just remembered that the tongue twister song was jipped off the soundtrack of Hum Tum. Originally the song was, "yaara yaara main to phisal gaya re" for Hum Tum, but never got used.
So i guess Kunal decided to change the lyrics around and cram it into this movie, haha.
