Which actress looks PRETTY?

I don't get around to browsing the Bollywood section much these days, and I'm sure you will be pleased about that once you read this post, but I do have a general idea of the way this section works.

Love my title? I bet you are furious and cursing me for being a loser, since you were here to vote for the "PRETTY" person. I apologize, but this was the only way to get your attention.

One major reason for this post.

Looks.

Yes, you read it right. Most of the posts either write, "WOW, SHE LOOKS PRETTY!" or "WOW, SHE LOOKS HIDEOUS".

Isn't there something beyond the looks?

I'm not suggesting that we stop talking about the look, but I'm saying that we can have a discussion that is beyond "how-so-and-so-actress-has-pimples-on-her-face-and-looks-so-damn-ugly" and "how-so-and-so-actor-does-not-deserve-such-a-fat-and-ugly-girlfriend".

Personality.

There is something called personality too, and we do not know these people personally, yet I feel most people do not consider the element of personality at all. So, if some actor has a supposedly unattractive wife, then the wife is bashed, and people declare the guy does not deserve her. Who are we to decide that?

If someone looks pretty, then the thread will be filled with positive reviews, while if someone looks horrible, then it is filled with negative reviews.

How many of us can wake up every morning and claim to be the most beautiful person on the planet?

We are ordinary people. These actors and actresses are ordinary, and the title of actor/actress does not necessarily mean they are extraordinary or possibly the most attractive people on the planet. They have their good days, and they have their bad days.

Another reason to complain I'm tired of topics that state, "Which actress is pretty?".

I find it strange and a little funny that IF does not permit comparison topics at all, yet there are so many polls with "Which actress is pretty?" as the header listing a bunch of actresses, and they are allowed. These topics remain, until an argument breaks out between two fans, and then the moderator comes to close it.

Can we differentiate someone's look with someone else? No, we can't.

Each of us has certain good features, and certain drawbacks. We all are aware of our good points, and our limitations. We cannot compare looks, and declare one person is beautiful over the other, especially based on what we see. More than anything, I have always believed the inner self is most important. It is not about how you look, but how you are as a person that defines whether you are beautiful or attractive.

People may say you are attractive based on the way you look, but if you are a complete vamp acting all rude, and horrible, then you will notice people slowly start to stay away from you.

Finally, I might as well bring in a wonderful phrase to end this post "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Wanna see a picture of me?

I'm pretty darn proud of it.

In a competitive field like a Film Industry, people usually don't go beyond looks.
When an actor or actress goes for an audtion for the lead role, if she/he looks unattractive then 90% of the time they won't get the role even if he or she is hell of an actor. If anything they may be considered for the role of the sister, or brother, or friend because of course the lead character has to be magazine GORGEOUS, even if they are protraying the girl next door.
The truth is that celebs look gorgeous most of the time because we want them too. The pressure in these kind of industries is always high because the moment the public denies you any attention then your out.
When we as the audience of these movies, magazines, tv shows decide to change our attitude and perception then only will the misconception that you have to be GORGEOUS to work in a movie or be part of a magazine change.
Otherwise, we shall continue too see more topics with headlines like "Who looks hotter", "Who is the hottest couple", Which actress is more pretty"

GossipGirl, firstly this is a very well written post. Secondly, I do agree with your intention but not with the overall post.

If a member starts a thread posting only a picture or several pictures of someone with no text at all. Then people will inevitably talk about looks; I don't blame them either for doing so. It would be sort of weird to talk about personality when only a picture is posted.

On the contrary, what is and can be annoying is when the picture is a minute part of the article and yet some people nitpick about looks when the article has clearly placed focus on the actor's professional/personal life. These types usually do so because they dislike the actor vehemently and only need a reason however small to bash them.

Lastly, I think we as audience have the right to criticize or praise actors. And yes looks is a huge part of what makes them saleable. So, yes its completely fair to talk about their physical aspects. Besides, we also do pay them indirectly to entertain us. So on this I disagree, they have put themselves out there and so they should expect that every aspect of their looks and personality will be lauded or berated depending on the situation.

I agree it is fair to talk about their physical aspects however there is always a limit. Sometimes in this forum I've seen cases where that limit is crossed. But then again that's a whole another story cause some people are very narrow-minded.
However, I agree that they've put themselves out there and in an Entertainment industry, your job is to entertain us, which includes looking good. Just as a docter has to make sure he saves our lives, an actor and actress knows that they have to entertain us otherwise they won't be among favorites.

@bold: Yep, I agree on that entirely! I completely understand when pictures are posted, and people comment on the look. I have done that often myself.

@red: This is the part I'm stuck at. I remember during the time of "Teji Bachchan" funeral people were talking about Ash and Kajol (I think) looking ugly. It was a funeral, and the focus should not be on anyone's "look". People commented over having eye liner on during the funeral, and whether it was deemed acceptable or not.

I agree with you on the last point that we have every right to criticize the actors, but I feel sometimes people go overboard with their comments on the actor's look. As long as we speak about their hair, their make up, their dress I find it acceptable, but there are people that go on pimples, wrinkles, complexion, weight and much beyond. While, it is the job of the actors to maintain their weight, yet if we catch one actress putting on even a little weight, then we comment, "She looks bad the lady needs to LOSE weight".

Yes, it is their job, but aren't they human beings? Aren't they ordinary? Do actors have to be super skinny to look attractive? You may mention Kareena and the criticism she received for looking so skinny, and people writing that she needs to put on weight.

My problem is when the actress is really skinny there are people that complain about it, and when the actress has a little weight on, then also people complain. We always expect this supposedly normal and fit figure. I don't want to jump on the subject of weight, since this topic is a little different, yet I feel these are supposedly the role models for the young generation. Little girls look upon these actresses, and I have seen girls that are fussy about their weight at the age of 4-5. How many girls at that age are even aware of say Madam Curie?

One pimple, and it is funny to read the comments that people write, while a part of me believes that celebrities will always be under public scrutiny, the other part of me believes they are humans, and extremely ordinary folks. We need to stop giving them this higher place, where everything they do should be perfect.

Gossip Girl

Thank you for that post. I agree with some parts and disagree with others. The celebrities we talk about work in a visual medium. The talk about how they look is inevitable. Like Psychobalehead said, these actors put themselves out there and people should be able to criticise them or praise them as they want to.

What tends to happen on this forum often is that people criticise celebrities not so much based on their actual looks, but to win in some strange game of one-up-man-ship going on between warring groups of fans. These sorts of comments are totally uncalled for, but unfortunately they make up a good chunk of what happens here.

It is in these situations that members don't just criticise how an actor/actress "looks" but also start name-calling. Which gets to be too much.

Even so, I do think quite a few members cross limits when they begin to criticize actors and actresses on their appearance at a personal function or event. Take the recent example of Kajol being criticized for her choice of apparel at the Durga puja for example. Merely because she's put herself out there as an actress - her profession - doesn't have to mean that she should be criticized on a personal front as well. This isn't to say that she shouldn't be criticized if she does indeed look "bad" at an event where she is promoting her movie or such where her purpose is to sell the movie to the audience hence involving them in the process but that she shouldn't be criticized for looking unruly if she is spotted at an event that isn't for entertainment purposes because I do think that oversteps boundaries -- at personal events, they are not there to entertain viewers. As such, I think criticizing actors/actresses should be limited to how they look in magazines, movies etc where their sole purpose is to get viewers to movies/entertain them. Their profession puts them into a spotlight, yes, but their personal lives, how they dress up when they go to a religious event, how they bring up their little ones, etc should be none of anyone's business unless it directly affects their professional lives.

Doston, deviyon aur sajjano.. bhaiyo aur behno.. Jisko like karne ka hai karo.. nahi karne ka hai na karo..I openly confess I watch bolly movies for Timepass.. fun.. bs and nothing else. I dont give a damn about so called "art movies" that shuv crap down our throats.. in name of "quality cinema".. please.. People have other things to do in life.. Bollywood is not a court of law where people's actions are judged for morals and ethics.. bollwyood is bollywood.. where people can escape from reality, put their hair down have fun.. and enjoy.. Everyone comes from a diff background.. with diff life stories and diff expereinces.. so they end up following diff things.. It is not "wrong" to like anyceleb.. If every bolly fan turns into an intelectual viewer and starts juding movies like a phd essay then this world would be a lot more boring.. Variety is spice of life.. Diff fans make this place colorful.. full of life.. So whats wrong with judging anyone about looks.. I would judge them the way I want.. tomorrow someone would tell me to marry an unattractive guy.. just because he is smart.. LMFAO.. I wont do that.. I would go for my hottie any day.. even if I have to compromise with his silly behaviour..

I haven't looked up the Kajol topic, but I did go to the one about Aishwarya. And people over there were calling her a "bhootni" and talking about how people should quit films because they look old. Ironically, some of those posters a few weeks ago were getting agitated when their favourite's age was being discussed by the media as a problem.

When these sort of attacks happen I think it qualifies as bashing. You can criticise someone and the way they look, without name-calling and hurling insults.

@bold:Some people may think thats the stupidest thing they've ever heard, and that your really narrow-minded, or some people may think that your dead on. and that personality and looks should be weighed equally.
In the end its one's opinion and how they view things. I agree with you, people watch movies for their own liking, some judge movie's like essays because that's how they are, and some people watch senseless movies for fun, to escape reality like you mentioned.
However, I'm sure that many of you agree with me that most of the time here on this forum things get way out of control. And from sharing your views on a certain outfit or hairstyle ends up being a race just to make one's favorite celeb outshine another one's. Certain topics are brought up like weight, family, religion that have no relation to an actor entertaining us. That is definitly the limit.
