He rested under the old oaktree
His face pale and his skin gritty
What was he doing here in the city?
Where the skyline was grey and smokey.
He had left his town and family
In order to earn some extra money
Why was there no peace in his heart?
Why did distance keep them apart?
He smoked his old pipe without a sound
And looked at the acorns on the ground
He stretched his feet out on the grass
And longed to be at home ...... alas!
At the river-side in the country
Amidst the sands and the trees
A tot with a mop of golden curls
In a pretty white dress stood a girl.
"Mother," said she, "the last boat's in",
As they walked towards the wayside inn.
The lady knew her daughter missed him
But she couldn't give in to her little one's whim.
"Don't fret darling," she said, "he'll come surely
Though not yet my sweet for it is too early .....
He'll be here for Christmas to see his little pearl.
From the city he'll bring you presents, my girl.
"It's not presents I want....it's just Daddy."
Said the little one a bit too sadly.
"Why does he have to go so far away?
Why can't he be with us everyday?"
The lady thought if only it were that easy
To live on love and fresh air and no money
She too longed to see her love once more
She too wanted him here like it was before...........

your girl in the poem reminded me, my childhood itself..
even i used wait for my father to come during festival days...
me and my mother stayed away from my father since he was in army...
BTW.. i felt the poem and story little bit uncomplete...
so here i am adding few more pic...
so that you can make this poem story a happy ending...

It indeed was a beautiful scene
A little cottage amongst the green
A long walk it was through the meadow
So he rested under a tree's shadow.
Weren't his favourite girls here somewhere ?
His seeking eyes continued to stare
He felt all his chains had broken free
As he had returned home to his family
The door opened, a woman appeared
A little girl stood stood very near
He smiled as joy through his being flowed
On his face his happiness showed
The lady just couldn't believe her eyes
As the hope in her heart began to rise
"John," she whispered and ran to the gate
Leaving Pearl behind in her haste.
She ran to him as fast as she could
Pearl looked petulant as she stood
Her parents spoke in hushed tones
While their little girl stood all alone.
John wiped the tear that dropped down
Pearl stood looking on with a frown
His wife her scarf around his arm tied
He looked at her sad face as she cried.
She looked up at him and pointed to the girl
To the little one who was his precious pearl.
He turned and grinned and quickly loped
Sprinting down the grassy slope
He knelt down and looked at her face
At her rosy cheeks and the curls out of place
At her pout and her displeased look
Under her chin his finger he hooked.
"Hello Pearl," he said "I missed you
How happy I am to see you."
He swept up the insect from the ground
She gazed at him with eyes round.
She stared at the creature in his hand
That lived in numbers on this land
The grasshopper was in his fist
Pearl leaned forward to give John a kiss.
