why do people try to overwork and overexert themselves to get promoted...?
it's the same answer... 😉
they say, no amount of money is ever enough... it's true... and fame and power are addictive...
however, politically correct answer would be that they do it in order to secure a better future...

It's just human nature - to be wanting to known, to be loved, to be successful.. some people's definition of success is fame.

Kully has given my answer. I really should let you and Geet speak for me. Much easier than being an active poster here.

To many people, being famous gives them an unparalleled high. Wanting to be recognized and loved by many certainly may seem selfish. But narcissism is part of it, and I think we all at some point are guilty of it. There is something to be said about what is shiny and sparkly attracting people. The luster and glamor of wearing pretty clothes and going to hang out at the cool spots, probably is fun, so I guess that is a part of it too.

Fame + Power + Money = Everything.
If you have money, you the power to turn the world on it's ass. Try it to verify my thesis :P
I agree with pksanam, power and fame are addictive. To know that you influence hundreds of people, to know that you have the authority to sway the general opinion, to know that someone is ready to kill for you - I think the thought alone is enough to make you want to desire for such control.
Like Nimmi said, at some of time, everyone dreams about being famous, well known and rich, and I'm guilty of this crime too :P

True. But I'd say money isn't necessarily a factor. Hitler, Stalin, Franco, Mussolini, Pinochet, Peron, etc weren't particularly rich until much later into their years of power and these are some of the people that have affected the world in a drastic way. Power, the greed for it, I believe can motivate anyone. Hitler, Peron had power over several people (military men, mostly) who were in a position to intimidate several others to do his bidding. Another common factor would be that these were military men who were quite influential public speakers. Napoleon, for instance, didn't have bucket loads of money when he became the Senate (as France was in debt due to previously having financially aided the American Revolution) and look at the mess he caused with the help of Robespierre (not rich either). They influenced people by fueling their need for appreciation and authority.
Nietzsche's theory of the "will to power" which inspired Adler's theory of striving for superiority both fit nicely into this. Some people who are lower on the socio-political hierarchy of any industry and have high ambitions can often coerce those of a weaker mindset to do their bidding. That and, fame plays a huge role in satisfying the ambitious one's ego and tends to attract people who are looking for bandwagons to jump on. The saying goes "Out of sight, out of mind" - many people have that kind of mentality so it's necessary to stay in news to further personal agenda. Appreciation and respect of others, of society is what humans intrinsically crave. It acts as a pepper-up for self-esteem and confidence of the person in question. That said, I think the whole fame as self-esteem / ego booster is more destructive than it is productive. Relying on other's acceptance of you seems rather warped when the person whose acceptance should really matter is yourself. I think that when you unconditionnally accept yourself as you are, the primitive crave for fame can decrease quite a lot which in retrorespect might increase acceptance of others as they are. However, it isn't a concept most of us (including me on several occassions) can suscribe to permanently. Insecurities do come up every now and then, which starts the vicious cycle of fame and appreciation by others as an ego-appeaser all over again.

........................................................................................................................................
Coming back to the topic...
Its total human....and not only in bollywood but in life generally.
Like sanam said...for most people...fame is important to secure a better future.
But then again in some cases, people want success and the definition of success to them is fame.
And then in some other cases, from the day they are born then want to have fame.
Etc, etc...you get my point...

So, i think fame is important to a lot of people in life because they become widely honored and acclaimed, they have better future, they have good money, they are loved, they have mostly a good public reputation, they are recognized in society, and for some, life gets easier...etc.
:)
