Kaun Banega Copycat: 'Inspired' TV shows

Bollywood is known to get 'inspiration' from Hollywood, but with reality TV hitting bigtime, it's the turn of Indian television to do a copycat 'meow'. In the past it was just a stray 'Swabhimaan' being modelled along the lines of 'The Bold and the Beautiful' but when 'reality' bit the TV bigwigs, remakes were born. Here's a look at some of the BIG guns in the world of remakes:

Kaun Banega Crorepati

'Kaun Banega Crorepati' is the show that catapulted Star Plus to an enviable position and was known as Amitabh Bachchan's comeback vehicle; one of the biggest shows on Indian Television produced by Siddharth Basu. The show was an exact replica of the original show right down to the logo and the sets of the show. Original: 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' hosted by veteran American TV host and actor, Regis Philbin. Indian: 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' on Star Plus hosted by Indian superstar, Amitabh Bachchan.

Indian Idol

The show that took the nation by storm, 'Indian Idol' was Sony Entertainment's trump card last year giving it historical ratings. The idea was imported by Freemantle India. Week after week, the show grew on people and soon took the form of a national debate. Abhijeet Sawant, the first Indian Idol was worshipped by millions of people who voted for him.Hiis album received a record breaking opening. Original: 'Pop Idol' and 'American Idol' hosted by Ryan Seacrest, judged by Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul Indian: 'Indian Idol' on SET hosted by Aman Verma and Mini Mathur, judged by Sonu Nigam, Anu Malik and Farah Khan
Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin

When pan-caked, jewellery laden saas-bahus were ruling the prime time, along hopped an ugly duckling and changed the face of Indian tele-serials. Jassi became a cult figure with her affairs becoming national gossip. Mona Singh roamed around in her Jassi garb even when she was attending weddings and parties. People waited for her to get married to Armaan Sir and also for her make-over. The series started a trend of serials with protagonist as independent middle-class girls. Original: 'Yo Soy Betty, la Fea' meaning 'I am Betty the Ugly'-a superhit Spanish series. Indian: 'Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin' on SET with Mona Singh and Apoorva Agnihotri
Nach Baliye

The show 'Nach Baliye' captured the imagination of the television viewers all over India crowning Sachin and Supriya as the best dancing celebrity couple on TV. The show was an imported idea as well, though a modified one. The original show 'Dancing with the stars' has a celebrity and a professional dancer teaming up instead of a celebrity pair. Indian television industry's most popular couples competed against each other providing endless delight to the viewers and apart from the title a whopping amount of 50 lakhs was at stake. Original: American show 'Dancing with the stars' and British, 'Strictly Come Dancing' Indian: 'Nach Baliye'on Star One judged by Malaika Arora Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Saroj Khan, hosted by Shabbir Ahluwalia and Sangeeta Ghosh

Fame Gurukul

Produced by Miditech, this licensed adaptation of a Spanish reality show is a reality drama that tells the story of 12 talented singers who join the Gurukul headed by Ila Arun. The original 'Operacion Triunfo' has been adapted across 11 countries and has been a huge hit in all of them. The winners of the Fame Jodi, Qazi and Rooprekha are today the toast of the nation with an album of their own, offers for singing in films and stage shows. Original: Spanish reality show 'Operacion Triunfo' Indian: 'Fame Gurukul' on SET, tutored by Ila Arun, judged by Javed Akhtar, KK and Shankar Mahadevan, anchored by Mandira Bedi and Manav Gohil.
Kudkudiya House No. 43
Already into its second season the show that started as 'Batliwalla House No. 43' has become 'Kudkudiya House No.43'. It's a comedy-chat show with a riotous Gujarati family of four from Rajkot in the business of making and selling yummy Gujrati 'farsan'. The show is a copy of the popular British comedy called 'The Kumars at No. 42'. Though the original has been a huge hit, the Indian version hasn't become big. Original: British comedy'Kumars at No. 42' with Sanjeev Bhaskar and Meera Syal Indian: 'Kudkudiya House No. 43' on SET with Siddharth Randheria, Nimisha Vakharia, Dimple Shah and Dilip Joshi
Deal Ya No Deal

Deal Ya No Deal' is a reality game show with actor, Madhavan as the host. The show has started last month and the viewers are trying to figure out the complicated rules of the show. The prize is huge- Rs 1 crore and some celebrity contestants have already been on the show. The show carries the tag of being the most popular show in all the countries where it has run. The Indian verdict is still awaited. Original: 'Deal or No Deal', known as the most popular game show in the world Indian: 'Deal Ya No Deal' on SET, hosted by Madhavan
Ek Ladki Anjaani Si
Ek Ladki Anjaani Si' replaced 'Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin' at the prime time slot on Sony. Interestingly its also an adaptation of a successful Venezuelan show called 'Juana La Virgen'; a super hit show in many countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay and Chile. It's the story of a middle-class girl who through a twist of fate becomes a surrogate mother. The endeavour of the channel is to make another Jassi out of the protagonist, Anu. Original: 'Juana La Virgen'/ Juana's Miracle, Venezuelan show. Indian: 'Ek Ladki Anjani Si' on SET with Kanchi Kaul and Shakti Anand

Time Bomb

Film director Ketan Mehta's serial 'Time Bomb 9/11' caused quite a furor as 20th Century Fox alleged that 'Time Bomb' was a rip off of their thriller series, '24'. 'Time Bomb' was an international political thriller aired weekly and had Rajeev 'Sujal' Khandelwal , model Amrita Saluja and Akashdeep 'Ansh' Saigal in the lead roles. Though Mehta denied but both the serials had striking similarities. Original: '24' by 20th Century Fox with Kiefer Sutherland and Sarah Clarke Indian: 'Time Bomb 9/11' on Zee TV with Rajeev Khandelwal and Akashdeep Saigal
Crime Patrol
Crime Patrol hosted by Shakti Anand of 'Saara Akash' motivates citizens to fight crime by asking them to be pro-active. It showcases sensational but unsolved crimes of recent times asking for the help of the viewers in nabbing the criminals. The revamped version with Shakti has made the show quite popular. Based on 'Police Videos', the original had videos of cops entering life threatening situations. Original: 'Police Videos' Indian: 'Crime Patrol' on Sony hosted by Shakti Anand
Khulja Sim Sim

Khulja Sim Sim' gave Aman Verma a new identity as a star game show host. His unique style and rapport with the participants made the show a big hit running to a record 108 episodes. It was the longest running show in its genre. The show offered prizes worthy of its name; cars, holiday packages, jewellery…the works. Original: Old American show, 'Let's Make A Deal' hosted by Monty Hall Indian: 'Khulja Sim Sim' on Star Plus hosted by Aman Verma

Kismey Kitnaa Hain Dum

A karaoke celebrity game show in which a team of five celebrity males battled against five female celebrities in various singing rounds. The show didn't really take off as the concept didn't excite people and the hosts Sonu Nigam, Hussain and Gul Panag didn't click. It was a remake of the famous British hit, 'Night Fever'. Original: British show, 'Night Fever' Indian: 'Kismey Kitna Hai Dum'on Star Plus judged by Sonu Nigam and hosted by Gul Panag and Hussain
Movers and Shakers

Shekhar Suman became the undisputed No.1 with this show. His wisecracks, wicked questions and a slickly executed format made the show a must watch. Shekhar came to be known as the desi Jay Leno after that. After the show ended it made a comeback in many avatars but Shekhar couldn't replicate the magic of 'Movers and Shakers.' Original: 'Tonight Show with Jay Leno' Indian: 'Movers and Shakers' on Sony hosted by Shekhar Suman

Kamzor Kadi Kaun

Hosted by Neena Gupta, 'Kamzor Kadi Kaun' was a game show based on the British show, 'The Weakest Link'. The show had the potential of becoming big as the prize money was good and it was a tested format. It was the hostess Neena who was supposed to be stern and schoolteacher-ish that spelt doom for it. The lovely, sensitive actress did not fit the bill of a caustic, no-nonsense hostess that the channel wanted. Original: British show, 'The weakest link' hosted by Anne Robinson Indian: 'Kamzor Kadi Kaun' on Star Plus hosted by Neena Gupta
Zabaan Sambhal Ke

In the good old days of Doordarshan, Pankaj Kapoor starrer, 'Zabaan Sambhal Ke' was a laugh riot that can put any cable TV comedy to shame. Pankaj as the harassed Hindi language teacher to a bunch of guys of all nationalities and coming from various parts of India was uproarious. The rest of the madcap bunch was hilarious too. 'Zabaan…' was one remake that did full justice to the original British version. Original: British comedy 'Mind your Language' Indian: 'Zabaan Sambhal Ke' on DD with Pankaj Kapoor, Shobha Khote and Tanaaz Currim
Ji Mantriji

NDTV attempted a remake of the 80s' famous British political satire, 'Yes Minister' and their version called 'Ji Mantriji' was well received. The show stuck to the original story and had Farooque Sheikh playing the minister and Jayant Kriplani as the bureaucrat. The serial made a statement at the dubious yet colourful world of politics. Original: BBC classic 'Yes Minister' Indian: 'Ji Mantriji' with Farooque Sheikh and Jayant Kriplani

interesting !!!

these are not blindly copied, just the original concept is taken that too not as it is, in a very modified way, but i bet kbc with my all time fav superstar for ever Amitabh is way catchier than the original one, its the charisma of Big B, and N.B with the youthful hosts, talneted couples and enticing and expert judges is best.i am personally interested in these two.

yes jassi from its spanish version was the ideal fairytale cindrella and the prince love story, apurva was better looking than spanish armando and even the heroine mona in her unglamorous form was dignified and intelligent still very sentimentally in love ,but t and d killed it soul and degraded it in an attempt to promote sony shows thru it and compete with star tv network, drag it, introduce unnecessary ekta style chars and what not - they made it into something unrecogisable, one would much rather read the original version if they dont want a classic work to be insulted.

well akashdep saigal i like as a negative tv actor and he did a good job in time bomb as usman, although it wasnt as impressive as Ansh Gujral's char in ksbkbt but Rajeev didnt seem to fit in, the show was pretty okay...Fame Gurukul, indian idoll etc are Bakwas shows for me, no offence to anyone, i wont take a qaziruprekha album even if its totally free of cost. god knows how these ppl get selected and voted and on what basis. as sekhar suman says in great indian comedy show, the slogal sudnt be - agla kaun but agla kyun....??😃

Who wants to be a millionaire is actually very very very boring! Regis is awful and the next anchor Meredith Viera was even more awful! Amitabh ROCKS!!!

And about Strictly Come Dancing- nobody watched it! It was a flop here in the States. Think about it- American culture just does not have the variety that India has. We can have everything from Bollywood, 20 kinds of folk dances, world music - everything. But on that show, it's just sa,ba fir rumba fir mambo. Gimme a break- they all looked the same. Yawn! Nach Baliye on the other hand was phenomenal!!!
