Om Ganpatye Namah

Some rishi are doing yagna. Another rishi Gritsamad comes there.
Other rishis - You are not welcome here because you are not the son of a rishi. Go and ask about this to your mother.
Gritsamad feels insulted. He goes to his mother. He is very angry.
Mother - Son, why are you so angry?
Gritsamad - Do not call me son. I was insulted because of you. I was not allowed to participate in yagna because I am not the son of a rishi. Tell me truly who my father is.
His mother tries to calm him down but he is very angry.
Gritsamad - You are not telling me the truth. You are wicked, of bad character.
Mother - You crossed the limits of a son and insulted your mother with harsh words. I curse you that you will have a son of demoniac nature. He will terrorize all the three worlds.

Gritsamad knows that his mother's curse will definitely become true. He decides to worship Lord Ganesh to get rid of the curse. He does Sri Ganesh's tapasya for many days. Ganesh ji becomes happy and appears.
Sri Ganesh - I am happy with your tapasya. Ask me what you want.
Gritsamad - Lord, you know everything. Please make mother's curse ineffective.
Sri Ganesh - Nobody can make mother's curse ineffective. But I give you a boon that you will have a very strong son, who will be my devotee. He will meet death at the hands of Lord Shiv.
Gritsamad - Lord, please grant me one more wish. Please stay in this place to bless your devotees and let me always bee devoted for you.
Sri Ganesh - As you wish. I will stay in this place in a part of mine to fulfill the wishes of my devotees.

Gritsamad comes back to his home. One day, he was doing Sri Ganesh's puja. Suddenly he sneezed and a child appeared before him.
Child - Father, I am born from your sneeze. Therefore you are my father. Till I become capable, please look after me. After that I will conquer the three worlds with my might and rule.
Gritsamad - Son, you will be looked after very well here. But you must worship Sri Ganesh daily.
Child - As you say, father.

The child worships Lord Ganesh daily. One day, when he was still a child, he goes to do Sri Ganesh's tapasya. He does tapasya for many years and his desire to rule over the three worlds goes on becoming stronger. He becomes a youth. One day Lord Ganesh appears before him.
Sri Ganesh - I am happy with your tapasya and have come here to fulfill your wishes.
Gritsamad's son - Lord, your divine rays are dazzling my eyes. I cannot see or understand anything clearly. I am feeling frightened.
Sri Ganesh - Ask me your whatever you desire to get.
Gritsamad's son - Lord, give me boon that gods, demons, yakshas, gandharvas all are subjugated by me. Indra and others bow before me. May I enjoy all the pleasures of this world and finally get salvation (freedom from the cycle of life and death).
Sri Ganesh - Your wishes will become true. I also grant you three cities of iron, silver and gold. None other than Lord Shiv will be able to destroy those. You will get salvation from Lord Shiv. You will be known as Tripurasur.

Precap - The gods are worried because of Tripurasur's terror.

It was sage Gritsamad, who first composed the "gananam tva" mantra and taught this mantra to his son. The mantra is:-
gaNaanaam tvaa gaNapatim havaamahe
kavinkaveenaam upamashravastamam
jyeshtharaajam brahmaNaam brahmaNaspata
aa nah shriNvannootibhih seeda saadanam

Translation: Through praises we worship you – lord of the ganas leader of all the celestials; visionary of visionaries; one who has great fame through various metaphors; most exalted of the knowers of Brahman; one who shines in the heart of devotees. Hearing our prayers, please dwell at the altar in our hearts with all protective means.

The mantra finds mention in both Rig Ved and Yajur Ved.
