Siddharth Suryanarayan, Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor and Sharman Joshi
Dir: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Cast: Aamir Khan, Alice Patten, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Soha Ali Khan

Plot: A young English filmmaker, Sue, lands up in India aspiring to make a film on Indian revolutionaries involved in the pre-independence struggle.

Owing to lack of funds, she ropes in students from Delhi University to act in her docu-drama.

Her find includes DJ (Aamir), who passed out five years back but still wants to be a part of the university, Karan (Siddharth), a son of a noted industrialist; Aslam (Kunal), a middle-class Muslim boy who lives in the bylanes near Jama Masjid; Sukhi (Sharman), who has a weakness for women; Laxman Pandey (Atul), who believes that politics can make the world a better place; Sonia (Soha) who is tomboyish and vivacious in spirit, engaged to Ajay (Madhavan), an air force pilot.

They have a self-centred and materialistic attitude towards life where patriotism and urge to bring a social change have no place.

The changes in perspective and values the young boys and girls acting in the documentary undergo as they shoot for a film forms the crux.

The cast speaks

Soha Ali Khan

I play…

Sonia is like any other college-goer who's energetic and full of life. She is one of the most real characters I have played so far.

My personal beliefs…
It's very important to remember our roots, our individual culture and society.

My favourite scene…
The film in its entirety.

My favourite song…
The title track.

On the sets…
It was a lot of fun. Aamir has a very good sense of humour and made us crack up all the time. And let me tell you, the guys didn't dare to bully me. They may be taller than me in stature, but I'm no less.

The message of the film…
It's about awakening of the urban youth who are more concerned about superficial stuff, rather than going to the heart of the social problems.

Kunal Kapur

I play…

Aslam is a youngster who hails from a lower middle-class family in Chandni Chowk. Although he is surrounded by fanatical people and constantly fed on fundamentalist viewpoints he is liberal-minded. A sensitive poet he is influenced by the Sufi school of thoughts. He is also sensitive to the needs of people around him.

My personal beliefs…
My philosophy in life is: Nothing is constant. I'm very flexible and believe in changing with times. As far as the social problems are concerned I believe there's no tangible enemy. We are struggling with the vices
that reside within us. The change has to come from within us.

My favourite scene…
The chemistry between all of us has really worked.

My favourite song…
Khoon chala.

On the sets…
Unfortunately, I was a victim of all the pranks. In fact, it was a war zone where every single individual is out to take the other. There were a few bloopers too on my part.

There's this particular scene where it's shown that we all are walking and all of a sudden I disappear. Actually, I had fallen into a ditch. Also, whenever you'll see us running I'm always the last one to arrive. This is because I had hurt my leg.

The message of the film…
It's about an awakening, a personal journey of
sorts. However, it's not preachy.

Atul Kulkarni

I play…

Laxman Pandey, a youth leader of a popular political party that believes in a certain ideology. He comes across this bunch of boys who according to him is not living up to the Indian culture and this is how the conflict begins.

My personal beliefs…
Every generation in a country goes through a period of struggle. While our ancestors fought for freedom, we are trying to cope with a corrupt society.

My favourite scene…
In a particular scene, I recite Sarforoshi ki tamanna.

My favourite song…
Rubaroo.

On the sets…
It was an exceptional experience. Credit goes to our director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Aamir. At the same time, Aamir is a big prankster.

Message of the film…
It deals with the youth and their aspirations

Sharman Joshi

I play…
A college going named Sukhi. He hails from a small town in Haryana but has moved to Delhi to pursue his education against his parents' wishes.

My beliefs…
Work hard and be honest is my mantra. I'm firm believer in popular adages, which acts as an inspiration.

My favourite scene…
The film in its entirety appeals to me; and not any particular scene.

My favourite song…
The title track, Rang de basanti.

On the sets…
It was a male bonding session. We gelled well from day one. And as far as Soha is concerned, we treated her like a princess and never bullied her.

The message of the film…
It depends on how an individual perceives it.

Siddharth Suryanarayan

I play…

I play Karan Singhania, a contemporary Indian youngster who has a particular opinion about everything.

My beliefs…
'If you have a dream then pursue it' is my philosophy. One must understand in the world he/she lives in and what he/she is capable of.

My favourite scene…
Let's not talk about it.

My favourite song…
Khoon chala.

On the sets…
It was a fun experience as this is my first mainstream Hindi film. The chemistry between the cast members worked to our advantage.

The message of the film…
Living the life of a generation that needs to be examined.

R Madhavan

I play…
Ajay Rathod who is Soha Ali Khan's fianc. I make a special guest appearance in the film.

My beliefs…
Well a belief without action is of no consequence. I live life to the fullest and don't reflect upon the past or worry too much about the future.

Alice Patten and Aamir Khan
My favourite scene…
Definitely, the last scene in the film.

My favourite song…
The title track, Rang de basanti.

On the sets…
We shot in Ludhiana and I gorged on amazing aloo ka parathas with loads of butter. Gradually, I realised that I'd put on a few kilos.

Message of the film…
It's a lesser-known fact that many youngsters in remote parts of the country are making sacrifices so that we can lead a luxurious life. It's time we thought about them.
