stereotypical roles for women?

Guys first off i crossed a 100 posts.yay for me. 👏 😛 . Now on to the topic have all of u noticed that the stereotypical roles that tv promotes for women are extremely derogatory and disgusting and for one make me extremely mad. Like ok the basic quality of being good is taking all the crap people throw ur way no matter what because that is what good girls do. 😡 that makes me so mad why cant they show strong, independent, smart girls as good ones. Second quality of being good is that u always do what ur husband tells u and forgive all his mistakes even if the bas***d cheats on u. 😡 i have seen so many shows where the women blame teh other woman rather than her husband who is actually responsible for her and should be loyal to her. The third stereotype is that always work hard to make sure that ur in-laws stay together and if they have probs butt into them. i mean like really whatever happened to minding ur own business and letting others worry about their own problems. The bahus such as kkusum and rimjhim and others let their families do whatever they want and they still say that no they r our family who love us. Why is it that tv teaches women that they should be subservient all their lives first as daughters then as wives and daughter in laws. aren't we people who have our opinions and shouldn't be taught that no matter what happens u have to be patient about everything our parents should teach us that stand up for urself and be strong and independent ( at least mine did ) and i really think people wud like to see strong women on tv because they like dr. simran from astitva, gauri from kkutumb and they respect them so i just wish the media would stop perpetuating these insulting stereotypes.
P.S i know i ranted there a little. i am sorry i am just very passionate. 😳

Gender stereotypes perpetuate for many reasons.

One reason is that we tend to categorize everything into two groups males and femals and ignore the possible overlap among them.

Furthermore, we as a society have created norms for men and women and we dislike it when certain expectations are not met.

Males throughout history have dominated in all fields and therefore gender difference is always explained as deviation in females.

Specifically addressing to the portrayal of female stereotypes in the media, it's again because of male dominance. Most of the directors, writers, and producers are men and the female staff usually have to work according to the orders of their male bosses repressing their own ideas that might be contradictory.

In addition, most families in India are patriarchial. Therefore, many men do not tolerate women becoming more independent and strong. I am secure being a man and I personally don't have any problems with women becoming more self-supporting.

I agree Zara . If anyone has seen Piya ka ghar ....i hate Rimjhim personality where all she does is give in .....even to her hubby having a sautan and hundred other atyachars. And even in Saat Phere .....Sanoli is this pathetic week personality who just cries alllllll the time . 😡

I look forward to watching stronger women portrayal like Kittu sab janti hai and Shyamlee in Hare Kaanch . These are women an average woman should aspire to be.

i think nowadays there is any worthwhile serial....same role played my diff women byt the same thing 😕

So what's wrong in casting the ladies in such megative roles? It is the ladies themselves who are the greatest viewers of such soaps, and are the frantic, vociferous critics.

And we have real life situations too like Shakti Kapoor's wife after he was caught in the sting

The media just wants to create more viewership, they make an underdog like situation for the main characters so that they get all the sympathy and more and more ppl see it. Secondly a majority of ladies who sees all these soaps are middle class housewives so the situations match their lifestyle to a certain extent which helps to increase the popularity of the shows.

erm this is a good topic to discuss...but I am kinda sleepy now.

But I will say this, if you are tired of stereotypical female roles watch Sex & the City or Charmed.

I will try to say some thing more sensible and constructive tommorrow.

i totally agree. my parents taught me 2 be strong and independent.. not 2 talk watever crap anyone throws at me. i was taught to stand up for myself. i hate the role of kkusum.. she can never mind her own business. her husband cheated on her a number of times but since he was the husband i guess it was ok... 😕 😡

i never thought abt it like that... 😕 i guess ur right. that does make sense. 😛 but i still dont like it.
