I think Kajol and Rani are definitely at the same level (though I personally feel Rani is better). I think that Rani is much more versatile than Kajol. I do not think it is completely Kajol's fault because she was acting in an era where movies were not that great and right now she is trying new stuff. Rani, on the other hand, tries to experiment. She has not only played the role in Black, which is one of the best performances in Hindi cinema, but has played versatile roles in Yuva, Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Saathiya, Bunty aur Babli. She has also played bubbly roles (Bunty aur Babli and Chori Chori), and the more restrained characters (Black, Veer-Zaara, Yuva). I thought KANK was a great movie and I thought Rani did a great job (it was my first Bollywood movie so I did not have any preconceptions about SRK, Rani or KJ movies). However, Kajol weakness is that she is really only known for her movies with SRK. They are mostly good movies but that is all she is really known for. She would only be half as famous if her jodi for SRK was not so loved (yet again I think they are good but overrated).
Please do not take this personally because I also like Kajol but that is my personal opinion.
A vast overstatement, one I definitely do not agree with. In my opinion, Black belonged to the little Ayesha. Her portrayal of a deaf, dumb and blind girl who relied solely on her id because the superego had not been developed yet is fantastic. How she emoted in the scene by the fountain was a class apart from most of the scenes Rani did. Yes, Rani was quite good in some of them - when she wasn't trying to act frustrated - but the performance as a whole wasn't convincing. For starters, Rani never looked blind; she often made a caricature of the character especially in the scenes where she was meant to act flustered.
While I don't think Kajol epitomizes versatility, she is more versatile than Rani, even if it is by a little margin. The villain she played in Gupt is touted by many to be one of her finer performances and her performance as the Alzheimers patient, the two different twin sisters in Dushman, unwedded mother who puts her daughter up for adoption in Dil Kya Kare show her to be more versatile than Rani. It would be fairer to say that Rani and Kajol are on the same wavelength when it comes to candyfloss roles but when we step out of the Drama/Romance genre, Kajol is a step ahead.
I don't know about that; I'd say both Shahrukh and Kajol were lucky they clicked together. Whilst Kajol is more famous for her roles with SRK, it still doesn't negate the fact that she enacted in films where she didn't play typical bubblegum roles. On another note, can't the same be said for Rani? She found her first solo-hit in Saathiya (a grand total of at least 7 years after she debuted) and then worked with A-listers like SRK etc. That said, let's just agree to disagree =)
