Are G8 climate targets realistic?😕

Leaders of the world's richest nations meeting at this week's G8 summit in Italy are likely to agree to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 with rich nations reducing them by 80%. Are these realistic targets?😳

The group is expected to seek a more co-ordinated position on climate change including promoting new technology and cleaner energy and limiting temperature increases.

Environmental campaigners have accused the G8 of willing the ends on climate change but not willing the means.

In December the UN conference to seal a new global climate deal will take place in Copenhagen, here world leaders will have to come up with a successor to the Kyoto Protocol.😃😳😃

How realistic is it to cut greenhouse gas emissions to these levels? Should our focus be on new technology? Should we stop using fossil fuels? How can a successor to the Kyoto Protocol be developed to ensure a sustainable future?😊

The Group of Eight leading nations agreed Wednesday to cut their emissions of heat-trapping gases 80% by 2050, but failed to reach an accord on shorter-term targets a setback that could have repercussions for a major meeting on climate change in Copenhagen later this year. Their failure prompted a larger group of nations India, and other developing-country polluters to backtrack from their own commitment to numerical targets they had planned to announce.
The Group of Eight summit looks set to limp to a close, with several pledges made by the world's leading nations particularly on climate change, food aid and trade falling short of expectations. the lackluster results, officials here found themselves defending the existence of the G-8, as economic powers, such as India and others, rise outside the club.

There is the Kyoto protocol set to be regulated from 2012.

Environment shifts are gradual and mass changes can't be incorporated directly. The problem is, it's expensive. Too expensive a compromise for developing nations like India and China.

It's as though the west have done the damage, are living a great life and are expecting the east to help cover the costs. Is it injustice? Yes. But the world has never been a place for justice. Grace is where it is at.
