well, i don't take this very seriously. This doesn't happen in US. You get married to someone who your family knows pretty much

It is wrong. It is a crime. I don't think such practices should be encouraged.

i agree with the authour of the post, it is indeed demeaning for any self respecting dignified human being to undergo such rituals, however i believe such rituals do not happen atleast in metros in india like mumbai, infact the girls in metros are as liberal and modern as people in the west.
infact today's females in cities are much aware about their preferences and would shut the door on any such stupid requirements for marriange.

But i do agree these rituals are prevelant in smaller towns and villages in india and i am aganist such indiginity to any human being, the marriage is institution based on faith and trust and display by girls of there wares like signing, or other talent is like shopping in a mall, which defeats the very purpose of marriage which is mutual trust.

ok- i think 1 in a million who is against this system....most of india follows this method-not denying that there r ppl like u...but plz remeber that the majority of india is the other way round...only few exceptions like u

it is indeed sad that such rituals are still required before the marriage is solominsed, the paradox is display of physical attributes and personal skills are examined and based on decision of the examiner, result of sucess is decided, this is not only demeaning but outrageous.

Girls are no merchandize to shop around based on the physical attributes and talent, the marraige should be based on mutual understanding and respect.

I would never marry a person who would ask me to display my talent in person to him, if a girl is required to sing, dance or show various other attributes then even the men should be asked simliar things.

Well the guy and girl should know each other and then they should tell their parents oh i want to marry this person adn i want u to meeet them and then the parents meet and stuff is decided. it is not a bazaar (market) for girls that u go and say hmm i dont like this one i think i'll buy someone else. i know wat i said sounds a lot like dating but as my mom puts it its not dating if u dont do anything objectionable(kissing/sex etc. ). if u hang out with a guy and start developing an understanding and want to marry him then u can choose ur own groom but i reserve veto rights. This way there is no show for it's just families meeting each other. well there is show but the girl is trying to impress her boyfriend's mother not a random person who thinks they r doing u a favor by marrying u.
