20-ft tunnel, Rs 2 crore to keep Kasab safe in Mumbai

KASAB'S CORRIDOR: Over 250 workers are working overtime to build the special safety tunnel.

Mumbai: It is possibly the costliest piece of real estate being built in Mumbai and it is coming up inside the walls of the Arthur road prison at a cost of Rs 2 crore for 20 feet.

Over 250 workers are working round the clock to finish a special corridor to take 26/11 accused Mohammed Ajmal Kasab from his cell to the special court inside the jail and back. The corridor will be bomb, bullet and chemical weapons proof.

It is believed that the special court and Kasab's cell are also being reinforced with iron plates. Also, Kasab's cell, the corridor and the special court will be centrally air conditioned.

Surveillance cameras will keep a 24-hour watch in the cell, along the corridor and inside the court.

This is for the first time in India's history that Rs 2 crore is being spent on security for a terrorist. For the police, it is money well spent, keeping in mind the threat to Kasab's life.

The jail itself will be turned into a fortress. A battalion of armed paramilitary personnel will be manning it 24/7. The Mumbai crime branch has also asked for ITBP personnel for the three-tier security arrangement.

Paramilitary personnel will patrol the corridor and the area outside Kasab's cell. Commandos will be placed outside the special court too.

"We are making all necessary arrangements for Kasab's security. We have asked the Centre for their best commandoes so that his security is complete," State Home Minister, Maharashtra, Jayant Patil said.

The trial is expected to start by the end of March and throughout the proceedings Kasab will remain chained.

For the Mumbai Police the first challenge is to ensure Kasab's security. The bigger task of presenting evidence and securing a conviction comes next.

I really dont see the point on spending 2 Crore on a prisoner who will most likely be sentenced to death.. There are soo many other areas in India where that money could be spent.. perhaps giving extra aid to those who lost their loved once in the Taj Attack or helping the poor in the slums..🤔

Do you think the Indian govt should spend this much money on a prisoner knowing that he will be sentenced to death anyhow.. ? Is any prisoner worth spending this much money on..? Considering Mumabi has one of the biggest slums in the nation.. shouldnt they allocate these funds to more appropriate areas...

This is the irony of this situation ! India is spending so much in protecting someone who was sent to kill so many innocent people. I wonder why we even need to have a trial when it is so obvious by now that kasab is guilty. He has already confessed ! The trial is just a formality that we have to carry out is it? 😕

and as far as spending money on slums and poor people is concerned that wil never be enough. if u see a beggar in mumbai they are most able bodied healthy people and with each person giving 1-2 rs to them they earn 50-100 rs then how can they be poor. govt made so many schools even provide food to children how many go? people they prefer sending children to work or beg.i think its just will to get up and go. govt cant do anything. they have already done a lot.

Hello Sandya rao, things are too ironical. This man should be hanged immediately but what is happenning is that the govt of India is holding him ransom for other purposes. The money spent on him 2 or 2.5 crores is money you and I pay towards taxes. So when we talk of nothing wrong about spending this money we are talking about our money. As it is too much has been spent for this guy. This guy should be executed as early as possible. But in India they may take at least 10 years for the case to come up and by then everyone would have forgotten about 26/11. When 26/11 happened we expected immediate action to be taken by the Govt. But till date they are throwing the ball in each others' court and laughing off at poor innocent Indians. Now that they have spread rumours of Kasabs' life in danger, we dont know what next can happen.

thats right but as i said he is a major evidence against pak therefore if they are keeping him alive so it becomes mandatory to spend money on them. if u talk abt the tax money. i dont like giving security to worthless politicians film stars who are MP doing nothing and the list is very long.

Come on people, The government is not spending 2 crores to fly this idiot out to Monte Carlo for a vacation. 😛It is using the money to build infrastructure, which can be used in future too.
Keeping this idiot alive and putting him through the trial process also is good PR for the country- it shows we do things the legal democratic way, not the barbaric taliban way.
He is going to be dead anyway, so might as well make a proceeding out of it. Hang him when he most wants to live and has had a chance to rue the actions that brought him to his fate. He was pretty gung-ho about dying earlier, let's make sure he wants to live when he finally gets to swing from the rope. Show him pictures of a virgin or two so he can see what he's gonna miss.😉
He's also been singing like a canary- let's have him sing some more and get all the dope about Paki misadventures. Torture him, cut off a limb at a time, take an eye out at a time, just the way his Taliban cronies like it. It's more fun that way, going halal, than jhatka style, when it comes to these @#$^&$#$. When his dead body is no use, throw it to the sharks, they'll get a good feed out of it. Do it also in a public square just the way they do it in his kind of countries.
Yeah, if he happened to be a lesser terrorist, the preferred approach should be to kill first. There'd always be time to discuss it later over english tea and biscuits..

Donno what the reason behind this but he is the ONLY terrorist alive who was involved in 26/11.After denying now Pak seeks his custody which is rejected by India.Even India claims that casab's life is under threat so this could be the reason. But y are they spending such a huge amount on his safety is still.........this is confusing
