"I don't want Yuvraj to venture into acting"- Yograj Singh
Monday, September 8, 2008, 9:59 [IST]

Yograj Singh, father of celebrated cricketer Yuvraj Singh is trying his luck in the Hindi television industry with a new Hindi serial on Colors Mohe Rang De, after a successful stint in the Punjabi film industry. He is currently shuttling between Chandigarh and Mumbai and spending two weeks in a month in each city to ensure the right balance. He took time of his busy schedule to speak about his entry into Hindi serials, his passion and relation with son Yuvraj. Excerpts from the interview.

What made you decide to venture into Hindi serials?
I have acted in more than 100 films in Punjab and wanted to do something with Hindi serials. Though I have done a Hindi film with Jeetendra and Rekha called Insaaf Ki Devi earlier, I have never acted in a Hindi serial. So when Deepti Bhatnagar (producer of the serial) personally requested me to do Mohe Rang De there was no way I could refuse. The role I am playing in the serial is also very significant and close to my real self. And last but not the least, Deepti's in laws are very close friends of mine, so that made me more inclined towards this serial.

Tell us something about your role in Mohe Rang De.
I play Kulbhushan, father of Rajbeer (the male lead of the serial). Kulbhushan is very close to a dictator and wants things done his way and nothing else is acceptable. He couldn't study much and started a business of dry fruits at a very young age. The story deals with how he makes it big in life and does things his way throughout. However, there is a softer side to him as well ? particularly his sense of humour. But whatever Kulbhushan does, he conveys a very positive message.

You started your career as a cricketer. Why did you move to films?
It is a very sad story and I still feel bad about it. I had an injury while playing and because of that I was forced to retire from international cricket. There was lot of politics involved and it became a very murky situation. However, cricket still is my first love. I eat, sleep and dream cricket. I run a cricket academy in Chandigarh and that is why I spend two weeks in a month there. Life without cricket is not possible for me.

But you have not had a very good relation with Yuvi...
Yes. We had some differences but all that is sorted out now. We are very close to each other now. He is fulfilling the dreams I had in cricket. I want Yuvraj to be a legend in the cricketing world and take revenge for all the injustice that has been done to me in the world of cricket.

Is it true that your younger son Zorawar is entering Bollywood?
Yes. I don't want Yuvraj to venture into acting before he retires from cricket. But I want Zorawar to make a mark in the film industry and as such he is currently undergoing a training course at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting school. My life is a mix of cricket and acting I want my sons to become great cricketers and actors.

Your life seems to be full of events. What else is happening?
I am keeping extremely busy with a couple of films and Mohe Rang De. God has given me a new life with these opportunities. At my age, I have completed my responsibilities as a son, wife and father and now I am doing what my hearts wants me to.

We do not intend to be preachy, says Colors

Mumbai (PTI): Hindi entertainment channel 'Colors', whose popular serial 'Balika Vadhu' dwells on the social evil of child marriage, says it does not intend to be "preachy" but be entertaining and convey a message at the same time.

"Our forthcoming show 'Na Aana Is Des Laado' is about female infanticide, while 'Mere Ghar Aayi Ek Nanhi Pari' is about a family wanting a girl child," Ashwini Yardi, Head of Programming, Colors, told PTI here.

("Our new lineup of shows, both in fiction and non-fiction format, underscore our commitment for differentiated content."

In an attempt to stick to storyline and ensure that the plot does not stray succumbing to market demands, Yardi said the less than one-year-old channel has decided to end its prime time show 'Mohe Rang De' because the story is nearing an end despite the show getting good response.

Colors CEO Rajesh Kamat said 'Khatron ke Khiladi' and 'Bigg Boss' had created a lot of buzz for the channel, launched in July 2008. "Our distribution strategy also paid off well," he said.

'Khatron ke Khiladi level 2' and 'Bigg Boss 3' will be the biggest attractions of 2009, Kamat said. There is also another show 'India's Got Talent', a talent hunt programme making its debut in Asia outside America and Britain).

Mohe Rang De takes a twisty turn

February 17th, 2009

Mohe Rang De is a very different period drama based on India's pre-independence scenario and now the serial is going to take a twist in its story. Show's lead character, Rajveer is going to switch loyalties towards Indian government from the Britishers.

"Such a change in Rajveer's character is going to change the whole plot of the serial and it would be very interesting for us to see such a twist in the serial", says Kulbhushan Lal, who is playing Rajveer's character in the show.

He continues saying, "It happens so that in a party which is organized by Rajveer's father Kulbhushan Lal invites his childhood friend Rai Bahadur and along with him he also invites the British lieutenant colonel there. Although many people like Kranti and all didn't want him to be invited there. In the party the British lieutenant colonel starts insulting Rajveer and Kranti and says many bad things about them.

Rajveer plays the character of a lawyer who fights cases for the British Government and after winning several cases he lost one case and for that the lieutenant colonel starts insulting him. He continues his assaults on Rajveer saying that he was a loser and stuffs".

"Rajveer is shocked to know the truth and he gets very angry on the colonel. The party scene is shot very dramatically and after all it happened so that the lieutenant colonel kicks Rajveer father's turban off. This act is not well digested by Rajveer and he decides to revolt against the British Government. This is the transformation act of Rajveer's character."

We went to the location of the shoot and had a chat with the cast and crew of the show about the whole twists and turn which is going to be aired in the coming weeks.

We spoke to Gavie Chahal who plays Rajveer in the show and he speaks about the whole change in his character, "My character in the show is of a lawyer who has studied law from London and now he has come back to India. He works for British government but he has no idea that he was being used and brainwashed by the British against his own country. When he gets to know about the truth he decides to revolt. I am very patriotic and I feel really proud that now because of such a change in my character I would be able to do something for my country."

We also spoke to Prableen who plays Kranti in the show, "After the whole sequence when Rajveer will change and do things which I always used to do I will get shocked and will think that it is one of his tricks."

We asked Kranti that will she start liking him after this change. She replied saying, "Initially I will not understand the whole thing and will doubt on him but may be afterwards when I will get to know the truth I would change but I won't disclose it now."

Rajveer's father Kulbhushan Lal says that he was really very happy to see that now his son is changing and he is fighting for his country. He was also happy because Rajveer has come to know the truth because of his father's insult in the party.

The new twist will be aired in about 15 days from now. This indeed is a crucial stage when Rajveer turns his loyalty towards the Indians. -Sampurn Media
