Genre Check: And Star widens the gap again
February 05, 09

After a dream run of sorts for Colors in week three and week four this year, the channel has taken a bit of a beating from Star Plus in week five, where the gap between the two channels has widened to 46 rating points. Star Plus has scored 317 GRPs in the week, while Colors is at 271 GRPs. Last week, Star was at 293 GRPs, while Colors was at 286 GRPs.

Star Plus officials were expecting the gap to widen in the week given the telecast of the Star Screen Awards and the one hour 'Bidaai' special. Colors, too, had a hectic week with 'Singh is King' and 'Om Shanti Om'.

This week, Sony is at 75 GRPs, Star One is at 63 and NDTV Imagine is at 61 GRPs. NDTV Imagine has seen a fall in GRPs despite two new Balaji serials, 'Bandini' and 'Kitni Mohabbat Hai', launching on the channel. However, Imagine has a few more big names lined up in weeks to come.

Sahara One is at 49 GRPs this week, SAB is at 47 GRPs and 9X is at 31 GRPs.

Media planners and buyers have been quoted on various occasions that even a 50 GRP difference between channels doesn't change the preference of a player in a media plan. However, numero uno is numero uno, and that in a sense justifies the efforts of the channels to ensure as many rating points as possible in their kitty.

Always easy to blame everything on an individual when the chips are down for them anyway! Everyone is ready with brickbats for Ekta, berating her for the Mahabharat Show, conviniently forgetting that it was Ekta and Balaji Telefilms that made Star Plus the number one channel for years on end and changed the very face of Television Industry. (Just to add, I am no fan of Ekta, but credit should be given where it is due!)
Bandini and KMH have been launched only two weeks ago...to say that they will bring down NDTV Imagine like 9X is a bit ridiculous, to put it politely!
Don't know about KMH, but Bandini has been getting rave reviews from both the print media as well as the electronic media, even by rival channel Star Plus, SBS! Plus, NDTV Imagine doesn't have the sort of market share that Star Plus has, so its far fetched to expect the new serials launched by a new channel to compete with an established channel.
Every channel gives a timeline of approx 4-6 months for their shows to create its audience, hence any predictions on a serial's doom in the very beginning is not just unfair, but actually incorrect too!
None of us can predict whether Bandini will 'bring' down NDTV Imagine or become the channel driver programme for it, but as of now, its an indisputable fact that Bandini is a superior show in every way and is finding its audience and popularity day by day!

Bang on Soapie behna !

LOL

Ekta so bad for NDTV Imagine? Now WHAT does that mean? I dont think you should be SO willing to put down a show - and that too just weeks after it's premiere- heck it's not even completed one full month ..

As soapie put it ,

Bandini is a super show in all departments and I have my fingers crossed it's going to get commercial success as well !

look these 2 ekta shows r just superb...bandani is just mindblowing serial so atleast 2 to 4 months r required for any serial then should print this type of article....u know bailka vadu ,biddai these serial too many weeks then they maintained these numbers...so no blame to ekta or serial...only balaji telefilms made the channel star plus but they r so they r so much evil toward ekta i think their chhannel will floop soon...and i dont care these types of stupid articles b/c these people r rivial of ekta and now they r worried about her suceeses b/c they know that bandani had a huge response from audience so they r promoting such types of horrible news...bandani is the best....even ekta new show KMH is also good...........

You are totally right Pinky ..

Bandini deserves more time to hold it's ground and make it's set of loyal viewer base before ANYTHING of such sort can be concluded ..

It is not Ekta or the channel which can govern the TRPS, it is the show, the storyline, the actors and direction and important how the viewers accept the show. Any show which cannot retain curiosity and interest of the show will fail and ultimately the channel will suffer. For a show to be successful it doesn't have to have big name stars, or lavish set and designer saris, ultimately it is the creativity of the production team, the time, research, dialogues, music etc...that is given attention to make the soap.

It's just 2 weeks and now they are saying this n that😆it's so funny😆

Anyways, I agree that script is the most important thing for a show to click....and that's why I have to praise ( which is pathetic for me🤢 ) Kekta that this time she did something beyond my expectations....

Bandini is bound to click....NDTV Imagine was never at the top position....and so there's no question of its falling down😆😆It already was😆😆So meaningless point it's😆😆

Bandini is the only show which is gonna pull NDTV Imagine....I have a guts feeling abt that....becoz I hate Kekta to the death....still I must say this is a good approach....it's gonna click very soon....It doesnt have cheap useless kitchen politics, business rivalry is a good thingy....It has a class.....

Very soon we will have positive articles M sure⭐️

Every NEW show is just blankly criticized the fact that the TRPs dont increase in the first few weeks of airing!.. As far as the two new shows go... if TRPs are calculated ADDING viewers of YOUTUBE, TORRENT DOWNLOADS, AND OTHER VIDEO BLOGS.. I am pretty sure that TRPs wont have any limit!!!😕

It's not lyk the life of a story lies on the TRPs.... Everything starts with a push.. so u have to expect low TRPs for the first few weeks since the TV is being filled with nothing but saas-bahu sagas, melodramatic reality shows and all the crap... Certainly people who watch tv these days are less interested and therefore you need to grind through their minds any NEW concept!

Let's see what people say in the future!

I agree with you.

I used to watch Mere Apne on 9X (from beginning to end and it was one of the truly few indian shows that I enjoyed watching) . It had big stars and it was a good production (better than some other shows on other channels) . Unfortunately 9X did not get popular and the trps for 9X shows didn't even reach 1.0. Then 9X joined hands with Balaji in hope of gaining popularity (from my observation, it seems that serials based on hindu religion seem to attract an audience i.e. hence Balaji and 9X expected Mahabharat to suceed. Personally, after having watch the older version by B.R, Chopra I never watched the Balaji production as I did not think it could be better inspite of Balaji big time actors and actresses enacting the roles).

I used to watch Bidaai too from the very first day on Star Plus (a relative was essaying a role) and Bidaai occupied top 5 position upon launch at the 9pm slot. Bidaai has gone on to do wonders. It is a good show overall.

I did not expect Bandini to skyrocket to the top of ratings. So I am not dissappointed that it hasn't. Balaji I feel has lost its captive audience for obvious reasons. Regaining audience will be an uphill task for them. Don't expect miracles. Based on their past productions, the name Balaji conjures up and image of multiple marriages, spineless characters, vamps etc etc. So one expects the same in their new serials. If they try something different and do it well, the word will spread after some time and the ratings for the show might improve. If not it will be axed and they will have to keep on trying again.

One should watch a programme that appeals to oneself, not based on the ratings. If you enjoy the show, watch it. At the end of the 30 mins, you should have a smile on your face. That should be the criterion. Don't let ratings dictate your choice.

Enjoy Bandini whilst it lasts.
