Despite injury, no rest for SRK

Shah Rukh Khan landed in India this week for a surgery on his left shoulder. But two days within his coming back home, Khan was seen at a promotional event of his sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai at Taj Lands End.

But that's not the only thing. King Khan, who will be out of action – read filming for My Name is Khan – for eight weeks, will be making appearances, promoting Billu Barber and filming for adverts in his period of "rest".

After attending a launch of Red Chilies's Idiot Box's first show on January 27 and then on February 1, SRK will be a part of the Nach Baliye finale. SRK will be on the show to promote his home production movie Billu Barber along with the leading lady of the movie Lara Dutta.

A source from the show informs, "We were thinking about many options but when we heard that Shah Rukh was in India, we approached him. And he agreed to be a part of the show which was very nice of him. In the last season he came to promote his movie Om Shanti Om and we received a good response for it so we were keen on calling him on the show again."

Shah Rukh is also expected to film a couple of advertisements for the products he endorses. He will also be looking into the IPL plan for his team Kolkata Knight Riders. The IPL season will begin soon and Khan is looking at potential players for his team.

"Since I have a forced holiday of eight to nine weeks, I will be attending most of the creative meetings of Idiot Box (SRK's TV production house). It is fun to attend it and it also helps to flesh out stories. I want devote some time for the promotion of Billu Barer which I could not do as yet as I wasn't here," says SRK.

Shah Rukh injured his left shoulder while performing an action sequence during the shoot of Dulha Mil Gaya. He was recently in the US for a 45 day shoot of Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan. But with his shoulder injury re-surfacing, Khan took the decision to come back home for surgery. He has been advised 8 weeks of complete rest after the operation. But it looks like rest is the last thing on SRK's mind!

SRK stalls shoulder surgery

Mumbai, Jan. 28: The shoulders that have for long propelled Bollywood's dream run now need a prop-up.

Shah Rukh Khan, a pillar of Brand India whose other global face Manmohan Singh is recuperating from a heart bypass, will undergo a surgery to repair a torn shoulder muscle.

The actor has been largely homebound since his return from Los Angeles last week where he shot a long schedule for Karan Johar's My Name is Khan.

"He has a tear in the rotator cuff on his left and requires an arthroscopy. It is a minimally invasive surgery in which a small incision is made and the repair is performed," said a Mumbai doctor aware of the star's medical condition.

In an arthroscopy, the surgeon looks at a video screen connected to a camera that is inserted into the body, together with working instruments.

"Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair is done under regional anaesthesia, with patients able to return home the same day," the orthopaedic surgeon said.

But unlike the Prime Minister, who had the heart bypass soon after blockages were found, Shah Rukh is pleading for a little delay though doctors, including his personal physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani, insist he go through it at the earliest.

"His home production Billu Barber is set for a February 13 release and he wants two weeks to promote it. So dates have not been fixed yet, but doctors are trying to convince him to hurry this up," said a source close to the actor.

Shah Rukh is no stranger to surgeries. He had a knee operation in 2000 and a spinal surgery in February 2003. "Thanks to my injuries, I know every part of my body, all the muscles, the tendons," he said at a conference of physiotherapists here a few days ago.

Shah Rukh had injured his shoulder in December while shooting for Dulha Mil Gaya.

"Doctors had advised him surgery and asked him to go through physiotherapy as well. But he had to go to Los Angeles for Karan's film. The LA cold worsened things. They did an MRI there and found a muscle tear in his left shoulder," the source said.

"The surgery is likely to be performed in India though his previous operations were done abroad," the source added.

SRK's production house is keeping the star busy despite the injury. "After returning from LA, Shah Rukh was in great pain. But he still shot a television promo for Knights and Angels, a TV reality show to spot cheerleaders for his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders," said the source.


On Tuesday, he wrapped his shoulder in a red scarf and attended the launch of Ghar Ki Baat Hai, a sitcom produced by Red Chillies Idiot Box.
If he was in discomfort, Shah Rukh didn't show it. Instead, he lashed out at critics of Slumdog Millionaire who have been complaining the film glorifies poverty. "Isn't that (poverty) a reality? If you (critics) have a problem with the word 'slumdog', why don't you look positively and see that there is a word millionaire or crorepati also," he said.

The film's title has drawn lawsuits for the use of the word slumdog. Amitabh Bachchan also stirred a controversy when his blog said the film "projects India as third-world, dirty, underbelly developing nation". But the actor later clarified the views were not his. Many people write on his site and he was just quoting one of them, Bachchan said.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan's shoulder injury is troubling him big time. The injury, that he suffered early December, while shooting for Vivek Vaswani's Dulha Mil Gaya, has been bothering him for more than a month now. Even then he continued doing his work without really heeding to his doctors' requests to take rest. In fact, it is said that he flew to Malaysia the next day after the injury to receive his Datukship (knighthood).

Shah Rukh Khan's doctors to let him know whether his shoulder surgery can be postponed for later.The injury aggravated because SRK continued to put pressure on his shoulder. While in Mumbai, he was said to be undergoing physiotherapy from Dr Ali Irani. But once he flew off to Los Angeles for My Name Is Khan, he had to undergo an MRI scan and now he has been advised rest.

But it is a difficult task to put SRK to rest. According to sources, he has been requesting the doctors to stall the surgery for a while, at least till mid February, so that he can continue doing promotions for his next film Billu Barber. The doctors have told him that they will let him know in three days, after a few tests are done, if they can manage to get the surgery done later.
