Great topic and a great question Nezu akka......👏👏

With all these bacterial strain outbreaks, be it in meets, or vegetables...

The first and the foremost thing to do is to clean the kitchen countertops with antibacterial kitchen cleaner, prior to and post cutting food.

Always keep separate utensils for cutting non-veg and vegetables raw materials. Since most of the bacteria tend to come from meat, some that I know cook their meat in salted water prior to cutting and preparing any meals with it.

With tomatoes, and spinach having been found to contain rare strains of bacteria, it is best to opt for cooked vegetable dishes, rather than raw.
After cutting, soap and rinse the utensils in hot water.
Always keep an eye on the expire date and the state of the pre-cooking materials to avoid food poisoning.

Eljay -
Your son's experiene with the Nebulizer and the theophyllin sprinkles is quite sad. OMG.. you had hospital visits till he was 6? Wow.. I'm really glad for you (and him) that it's a thing of the past, now.
Ours hasn't been so bad and I'm already cribbing about the monthly visits to the doctor. I really wish I could fast forward like a 15 years from now to see my daughter free of it. Although I know it's not the same with everyone. I keep going back to the same thing, when I think about it. The doctors say that it's not contagious when I think that she picked it up from India, then why now if she didn't have it all these 6 years?
Anyway, I hope it ends just as it had started. It really IS painful for the child and the parents. I can totally see that it would've been your full time worry back then. Thanks for sharing some info with us, especially that there IS an end to it, SOMETIME.

Supree -
I couldn't believe what I was reading from your post. Your son's ailment sounds exactly like my daughter's!!
Thanks for coming out and posting it Supree.
It's almost like a support group Eljay and Sup. Thanks guys!
Ayyo Kadavule, neengalum indha kashtam ellam pattaacha Sup? Starting Nebulizer as early as one month old?!! Paavam kutti baby. You also seem to have gone thro a lot raising the baby!
The throwing up part was happening to my daughter till she was almost 4! Would you believe that? Every day, after either lunch or dinner she would throw up and we even took her to a pediatric gastro, b'cos the regular pediatrician had no clue why she was throwing up so frequently. May be, my daughter had needed the Nebulizer even back then and nobody diagnosed the need properly. Pediatric gastro just dismissed us as some Indian parents being over sensitive about the kid's eating habits.. grrr..
I can totally understand the situation that you've been in, we were so so so scared about her throwing up back then. Even if one cooked rice had not been mashed up, she would throw up even at the age of 3. I used to be so envious of Moms who had kids of the same age eating fries and burgers while I would be mashing up/grinding rice and veges.. sigh.. She just got over it after she turned 4, although we were never able to find out why she had been throwing up all along.
We also give her the Albutrol with the saline mix in the Nebulizer, but the Dr has been asking us to switch to Pulmicort, which we are reluctant to start b'cos it has steroids. Just waiting to see the results continuing with the Albutrol. But even regular use of Albutrol is not advisable, I heard. So in a fix right now!
The other thing you'd mentioned is the pollen allergy. While last Spring and Fall it only mildly bothered her, like I mean ONLY about 50 tissues or so a day, this year in Spring it was the worst! Several doctor visits later we found out children's Claritin works for certain kind of allergy only. Just like you, I buy this expensive over the counter medication so many times in Spring and Fall (even Fall this year and you'd think where's the pollen at this time of the year! I get so confused how she manages to get the allergies in Fall..it really is not typical to catch allergies this time of the year.. right?) and stock up on it!
So far she's the first and only one in the family to be allergic to pollen. Just so scared when I read some Desis write that they lived 12+ years free from allergies and just like that, one spring season they start becoming allergic. It sounds crazy but it does happen that way!
This past spring/summer we drove to Montreal for a vacation via upstate NY and all the way through NY we were so stressed out that we just wanted to drive back home cancelling the vacation. The 200 count tissue boxes were disappearing by the hour and the child suffered so much b'cos we were driving thro roads that had really tall trees all the way. I don't even want to think about next Spring, it just sounds so scary.
Is there a better home remedy for pollen allergies any one knows of? Something that's been successful to you after you've tried it out ?

I read this from a site .. thought of sharing it here ...Lots of kids get the flu, but what do you do? Here are some tips:

Make sure they drink lots of liquids, like water, chicken broth, and other fluids. They must get plenty of sleep. If they can't sleep anymore, try making them just to rest like watch a movie, or read a book or magazine.Get them to wear layers. They might be cold one minute and hot the next, so if they wear plenty of layers they can pull your favorite sweatshirt on and off. Get them to wash their hands frequently. You don't want to them to spread the germs that cause the flu. Also, don't share cups and eating utensils, like forks and spoons, with anyone.
