Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi

Reviewed by Manish Gajjar

'A Hindi romance with traditional appeal', BBC Shropshire Bollywood

Director: Kaushik Ghatak
Starring: Sonu Sood, Isha Koppikar, Alok Nath, Smita Jaykar
Information: Contains one scene of mourning
Running time: 136 mins
BBFC cert: U
Release date: 7 November 2008 by EROS International
Rating: 4/5

Trained in classical Indian music, Chandni (Eesha) comes from a small, poor family. She meets rich guy Prem at a singing contest and immediately falls in love... soon leading to a traditional engagement celebration.

But fate intervenes as Chandni's father dies before the planned grand wedding. This leaves Chandni to shoulder the responsibility of looking after her young brother Anuj and sister Sandhya.

Left with no choice, Chandni puts her marriage and singing career on a 12-year back burner, earning a living as a music teacher to educate and bring up her siblings.

Prem patiently waits for his true love, while family members try to break his relationship with Chandni in this musical family melodrama.

In this day and age where weekly releases seem to feature comedy, action and science fiction, this family melodrama comes as refreshing change.

Debut director Ghatak successfully incorporates colourful weddings and religious rituals unravelling a make-believe tale full of family values and cultural traditions.

With songs and celebrations aplenty in the first half, the movie takes a very serious turn post-intermission, with intense emotions bringing tears to your eyes.

A traditional musical score and cinematography blend well with the family-orientated backdrop, creating a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of past box office hits like Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hai.

Eesha Koppikhar gives a sincere and tear-jerking performance as the courageous Chandni, who rises above her own needs to look after her family in the hour of need.

Sonu Sood acts well as the respectful son and lover, who patiently wait for 12 long years to be with Chandni.

On the whole, Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is a family entertainer appealing to audiences who like sentimental love stories and crave for traditional Hindi movies.

Sonu and Eesha ecstatic as 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' opens to bumper response

By Joginder Tuteja : Sonu Sood and Eesha Koppikhar are mighty excited. Their 'image changing' project, 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi', has opened to a bumper response and promises to stay on the same note with good reviews already flowing in. Well, for those who are wondering about the film's opening since Friday is still a few hours away, let's solve the confusion. On Wednesday, the film released in Bihar to coincide with the festive occassion of Chatth Puja, which is considered to be quite auspicious in this part of the country. Result? The film opened to a 100% response in cities like Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Begusarai and Chapra.
Says a source from Chanakya theater, Patna, "'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' is exceptional here and the extraordinary opening of cent percent collections has been quite a pleasant experience. However, I won't see this as a surprise considering the fact that Barjatyas have a loyal fan following here. I am sure collections would remain steady since the film is being appreciated by one and all."

Sonu Sood is ecstatic ever since the moment he was informed about the film's success in Bihar. "I have been informed that large family crowds are watching the film and coming back fully content. Ladies seem to be touched by the emotional content of the film and have been seen weeping after the show's conclusion. In fact the demand for the film is such that there are already talks around doubling the print count at these centers."

It was expected though that small towns and cities would lap up the film, isn't it? "That's right but I am sure even in metros the film would show a similar response. Yet again, Barjatyas are applying the strategy of selective release across the country, hence only a handful of prints would be circulated. These people certainly know what they are doing."

Eesha adds, "Yes, Soorajji films have a loyal market, hence we were always expecting the film to take a great start. Apparently, at places where the film has already released, plans are booked till the first weekend. People are saying ki yeh ek anokhi film hai aur ek atoot bandhan ke baare mein batati hai. I am glad the spirit of the movie has gone down well with the audience. If required, I may even visit Bihar for taking the film's promotion forward."

"It has been a great beginning this festive season and I hope it translates the same way into the rest of the country as well. We are going all out for the film's promotion and would be visiting Chandigarh today and then Delhi tomorrow", signs off Sonu.

: 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' is wrapped in sugary-tearful melodrama

Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai, Nov 07: Rajshri Productions has made some very 'sweet' movies and classics like 'Dosti', 'Uphaar', 'Geet Gaata Chal', 'Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se', 'Chitchor', and 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun'. But now it seems that the famous Barjatyas, known to make family-centric movies are running short of ideas, that's why their latest offering 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi', seems to have come, straight from their archival collection.

It is based on 'Tapasya' made in 1976, which had Rakhi as the lead actress. And to top it all, the film is wrapped in such sugary-sweet moments that it becomes a strict no-no for a diabetic person.

Agreed that Rajshri Productions has always showcased Indian family values in a very 'sweet' light. But now times have changed and searching archival collection for film concepts can be fatal for one of the oldest production house in Bollywood. Moreover, the film, idea, concept, treatment looks dated although Sonu Sood, Eesha Koppikhar and other actors have managed a decent performance.

The film is about Chandni (Eesha Koppikhar), a middle-class girl, who lives with her siblings and her father Bhushan (Alok Nath). She is a very good singer and falls in love with Prem (Sonu Sood), who also cares for her. But tragedy strikes on the day of her engagement as her father passes away and Chandni, who is barely out of college finds herself saddled with the responsibility of her brother and sister. Gradually, love and romance take a backseat as Chandni struggles with her responsibilities and Prem promises to wait for however long it takes.

So, far so good but there are several flaws in the script. Prem belongs to a rich family; he could have helped Chandni out of her troubles. Also, clichd moments - a child being denied a glass of milk just because his father has died – makes you scream with dismay. The film is loaded with some good songs and the music may turn out to be a hit. The locations are realistic and the background is created keeping in mind the middle class audience. The film is definitely not for metros.

Go for this one, if you want to take a break from comedy flicks and want to indulge in a sugary-tearful melodrama. Two Cheers!

'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' (EVAB) is another wedding planner from the most successful banner of Rajshri of Barjatyas in this genre of films. However, Sooraj Barjatya who is at the helm of affairs hasn't been as successful in this movie as in his previous ones that not only proved hits but created a sort of record in Bollywood. Though in the same genre yet this is different in more than one respect. Though 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' takes a tragic turn in the post-interval session, Sooraj Barjaya tries to end it on a pleasant mood. Two, the movie pertains to the wedding genre, but its villains aren't the characters but their circumstances.
The characters don't play villainous roles, but their circumstances let them not be happily united. This is a new angle worth appreciation. Besides, this is a traditional film inasmuch as it revolves around a family's sacrifice in love. Moreover, its director is Kaushik Ghatak, a debutant who adapts himself completely well to the banner's genre that is always full of emotions. While analyzing its features, we find that 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' is full of traditional charm. Though a romantic story but without any physical proximity between the two lovers - the girl and the boy. As said earlier, the movie centers around the theme of pure love but their circumstances turn them villainous. Hence, it's significantly different from Barjatya's other movies in the past.

The movie is unique inasmuch as the heroine named Chandni played by Eesha Koppikhar and Prem in the guise of Sonu Sood fall in love with each other at a singing concert. As usual in Bollywood stories, the one party, here the girl, belongs to a poor family comprising an old father and two younger siblings, while the boy comes from a rich background. The tragedy is that both are engaged but have to keep a long distance from each other because of the girl's poor family dependent on her for their livelihood.

You need enough patience to believe that the boy waits on and on for nine long years and later too when the girl's father dies, leaving the siblings to her care. Very tragic indeed! But, Barjatya being Barjatya, he gives another twist to the story. This time, he provides a positive turn and thus wipes out the tears of the audience before they leave the theater. So, the post-interval tragedy reverts to the pre-interval pleasant mood when the romance between a poor girl and a rich boy does develop fast and deep and turns into divine love.

During our critical analysis, we find that Eesha Koppikhar's performance as excellent all through the movie even though there has been the least scope for looking bold and sexy. Alok Nath and Vishal Malhotra play their parts too well. The director does full justice to the movie by adhering to the Rajshri tradition and style. Though there are a number of songs in the first half to keep the audience's mood pleasant, the movie's music as a whole isn't as good as in the Barjatya's previous movies. On the whole, the movie is likely to fare well in spite of its several shortcomings.

Director: Kaushik Ghatak
Released Date: November 07, 2008

Story :
An emotional saga, the story begins on the small by-lanes of a middle class housing locality in Bhopal and in that lives the beautiful Chandni (Eesha) along with her father (Alok Nath), her younger brother Anuj (Master Amey Pandya/Vishal Malhotra) and Sandhya [Baby Ishita Panchal/Amrita Prakash]. Chandni happens to be an expert in classical and folk dances and at home she simply dotes on her kid brother and sister. As life would have it, Chandni goes for a stage show and chances upon Prem (Sonu Sood) and it is love at first sight. However, Prem happens to be from an aristocratic business family and a good lover of music. Both of them decide to get married and just when life looks hunky dory, right at the time of her engagement, Chandni's father dies. Heartbroken and not sure of what to do with her siblings, she takes up a brave decision and decides not to marry until her brother and sister grow up. Now, this process takes a total of twelve years, does Prem wait for that long and get going with his life. Do the siblings settle and make Chandni proud? All this forms the rest of the story.

Presentation :
The director has come up with a rather emotional subject but then he has been careful in his presentation and narrative. The script was written well, dialogues were intense, screenplay was perfect. Editing was a bit coarse but alright. Cinematography was excellent but the music was a major drawback which resulted in the film losing out some points. Eesha looks ravishingly beautiful and came out with a good performance, despite her traditional look, her sex appeal is still intact. Sonu was perfect and fitted perfectly in the understanding guy's role. Alok Nath was gracious, Smita Jaykar was neat, Vallabh Vyas was to the mark, Vishal comes as a revelation and is top notch, Chhavi is apt, Amrita did not have much to do. The others did their bit with ease.

Conclusion :
The idea of having a twelve year clause sounds far too idealistic but then the other aspects of love, emotion, sentiment and attachment has actually overpowered the flaws. The first half was bit bumpy due to the unnecessary and not so melodious songs but things change during the second half and it is a typical Barjatya movie that goes on for three hours. This is definitely not for the fun loving and metro centric audience but family folk will definitely connect to it in a big way. Commercially, the movie will do really well in the rural and interior regions and it appears that a success may just be in the pipeline.

Bharatstudent Verdict : Neat homely Indian emotional drama, family audiences only please...

I loved doing 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi': Eesha Koppikhar

06th Nov 2008 16.00 IST

Eesha Koppikhar departs from her glamorous onscreen image to play a girl-next-door in Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi . The actress says she loved doing the film.

The girl who was once known as the "Khallas babe" and jived to saucy songs such as "Ishq Samundar" has now gone de-glam for Rajshri Productions 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' which releases on November 7. In the movie she plays a small-town girl who learns classical music and becomes the guardian of her younger siblings after her father passes away.

Eesha says her role in the film is unlike anything she has done so far in her Bollywood career.

"I started my Bollywood career with a glamorous image and the songs became a rage. So I never got an opportunity to do something like 'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi'. But this film has given me a chance to explore my personality as an actress," Eesha is quoted by a news agency.

The actress reveals that she was waiting to play a typical Indian girl kind of role when this film was offered to her.

"I was looking for a role of an Indian girl, who is loving, a perfectionist, believes in commitment and has strong values. This film offered me that and it is a complete family movie," she said.

Speaking about her look in the film, Eesha said: "I wear very simple and ethnic clothes in the film. I don't wear too much make-up and the entire look is very serene. I loved doing it."

'Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi' has Eesha pairing with Sonu Sood for the first time. The film is conceived by Sooraj R Barjatya but has been directed by Kaushik Ghatak .

For Eesha Koppikhar, working in EK VIVAH AISA BHI was not just an enriching experience as an actor but also as a human being, Apparently, so impressed and touched she was during the making of the film that she soon saw her getting rid of all the negativity around her and charted a positive path for herself.

'It is clearly the Barjatyas effect', says Eesha who would certainly be looking at a new turn in her career with EK VIVAH AISA BHI that sees her in a saree clad avtar, 'I owe it to people like Sooraj Barjatya and Raj babu. They are the epitome of simple living and high thinking. You keep hearing wonderful stories about them but I experienced it for myself when I worked in close interaction with them. They are such wonderful people.'

Eesha admits that working in a Rajshri setup helped her change the way she was over the years.

'We had an extensive schedule in Bhopal early this year and I used to wake up at 5:30 in the morning. Then I listened to all the 'bhajans' and slowly I started finding myself loosing all the negativity around me. I got the inner strength to assess what worked for me and what I should avoid. It wasn't difficult eventually to keep distance from anything that used to affect me earlier', says Eesha who claims that she was a different self after returning from the film's shoot.

'People at Rajshri have an entirely different way of treating people', recollects Eesha, 'For them, you are the same, whether you are an actor or any other member from the crew. Once I returned, I could feel within myself that I had a much increased respect for humanity EK VIVAH AISA BHI was truly a life changing experience. I am thankful to God for not just being a part of this film but also the wonderful learning experience I gained from the people I worked with.'

'No wonder, Rajshri people come with such great goodwill that they have earned in last so many decades. No one has anything negative to say about them and everyone blesses them whether from within or outside the industry. Working in EK VIVAH AISA BHI is truly equivalent to working in 50-70 other movies', are Eesha famous parting words.

"I don't think anybody has presented me in the way Rajshri has" - Eesha Koppikhar

By Devansh Patel, November 8, 2008 - 12:54 IST

Eesha Koppikhar believes that there is a price to pay when you work for a Rajshri Production's film. The price she paid was that it turned out to be her best ever role she's been waiting for since she began her acting career. The slender and sensuous actress illustrates the physical and mental wear and tear of being hurled into a Rajshri film. So all is not 'khallas' for this Bollywood beauty. What follows after Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is her next best role in Shabri where she plays a woman sandwiched between the mafia and the cops. Gone are her Company days she says, there is much more to her than just being a glamour doll. That was then, this is now. Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is out now in cinemas near you and she is sure to stun you this time around. Dressed to hilt in her Indian outfits in the film, she looks absolutely gorgeous. In this Bollywood Hungama exclusive, Eesha gets into a perfect marriage material type talking about Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi, her ongoing relationship with her boyfriend and their marriage plans.

Working with Rajshri Productions is a revelation in itself. Did you ever dream of it that one day you'll work with them?
Once we enter Bollywood, any actor on his or hers wish list has a couple of production houses he or she wants to work with. Rajshri is one of them and I was no different. I've always wanted to work with Rajshri because of the way they portray human emotions on screen and the way they present their female leads. Rajshri's motto is simple living and high thinking. They are such a wonderful bunch of people to work with.

I've always wanted to work with Rajshri because of the way they portray human emotions on screen What makes Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi different from other Rajshri films?
The genre is more or less the same, what Rajshri uses in all their films. But the film will be a bit different as far as the story is concerned. It's not too much of a family involved this time. It's about a struggle of a woman and how a man stands by her. I play a typical Rajshri heroine and Sonu Sood plays a typical 'Prem', Rajshri's favourite. Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is a new look to Rajshri cinema in a way.

So how was it to work with a face not known by many in Bollywood - Sonu Sood?
There is always a first time for everyone. Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is Sonu's first big film and even mine. I don't think anybody has presented me in the way Rajshri has. This is one of my best films in my career I've done, including Shabri, which is yet to be released.

I don't think anybody has presented me in the way Rajshri has. This is one of my best films in my career What was so challenging after you mentioned that you've never been presented like this before?
I've never got an opportunity to showcase my talent in a way I've done in this film. I've never really got a script of this kind and the length too. You will never see the emotions portrayed by me in this film somewhere else in my earlier films. To bring out the emotions and serious acting is the biggest challenge an actor goes through and if you are successful in that, you've won the battle.

Which Rajshri films inspired you the most?
Maine Pyaar Kiya. I was very small when I saw the film but I remember falling in love with Salman Khan after seeing the film. Even Hum Aapke Hai Kaun inspired me and somewhere down the line I wanted to be a part of that film. Now I have no regrets.

But you weren't directed by Sooraj Barjatya…
I have no complaints as long I am working for the banner Barjatya. I can tell you something about working with the debutant Kaushikda. He looks frail and fragile, thin and short man but he has got a tremendous command over what he wants to bring out of his actors. He is so thorough in whatever he was doing. I didn't go for any singing lessons because Kaushikda's vision is so good that I did whatever he told me to do. I was very convinced. The first day he started narrating the script to me, I started crying.

Rajshri is synonymous with its music too. Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi doesn't sound blockbuster kind. What say?
Well, I could be a little biased here because it's my film. I think there is a lot of variety in this film. I play a folk singer; there is a Qawali, classical and ghazal. Then there are situational songs which move the film forward and backward six to seven years. There are songs with only two para's to add to the scene. At the end of it, you feel that there should've been more than 12 songs. It's Rajshri music after all.

You're looking the most beautiful in this film than all the other films we've seen you in.
Thank you so much. What happens is that a lot of time your role may be good or ok, but not that much effort is taken in presenting the character. I am not talking about the actor here. Not much homework is done about the character. So somewhere the actor does not look convincing in that particular role. But the amount of effort and research we've done before the shoot just reflects in our work. I play Chandni in the film and I relate to her to a very large extent because I come from a very close-knit family. I'm very close to my parents. I believe that once you make a relation, whether it's a friend, boyfriend, daughter-mother or a daughter-father, till you die you have to maintain it. I will maintain all my relations till my last breath. Plus credit should also go to Ana Singh who has designed our costumes. They look so simple and yet so stunning.

What about the other roles which you've portrayed in your previous films? Aren't they special?
They are special but I do not identify with the 'khallas' kind of roles I've played in the past. In fact, I've done about twelve films in the South before I played a 'khallas' girl. All my South fans were pretty surprised and told me that they couldn't imagine me playing such a role. They couldn't see me so glamourised. I've always played a girl-next-door type of roles there. I am more comfortable playing the latter than the bold and glamourous types. The three films I've enjoyed doing the most are Kya Kool Hain Hum, Shabri and Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi. The other film I'm really looking forward after this one is Hello Darling where I play a Haryanvi girl who comes to Mumbai for a job.

I do not identify with the 'khallas' kind of roles I've played in the past Do you think now-a-days, Rajshri going audiences have patience to watch a long film?
Well, this film is two hours and ten minutes long. But you're right. Today, the audiences have lost patience. They are more restless but at the same time the script matters. Kaushikda is famous on small screen after directing serials like 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and 'Sanjeevani'. That's how he started. So he is very fast and not used to stretching it too much. When you speak to him you'll understand his sensibilities. I myself was shocked. I did a film in 120 days, which is almost half a year. You normally finish a film in three months. So I was shocked to see the film is of such a short duration, not because they've edited anything from the film. Hardly anything has been edited. It's because the cast and the crew have shot this film with so much love and affection.

We've also seen that Rajshri has a habit of releasing their film with fewer prints and then hitting it big. Will Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi see the same results?
It's their style. I guess they have complete faith and belief in their product. In the overseas market, this film will do very well because in the U.K and the U.S, family dramas work the most. They love the human emotions and in some ways the overseas audiences miss our culture and heritage. This is the only way they can relate to it, through films.

So, the spell change is working for you huh?
Yeah. I've changed my name now. Somebody came up to me last November and said that my name which spells with an 'I' is not falling on an auspicious number and thus I should change it. The whole mankind tries and hopes. So I went for it. Let's see if it works.

Brief us a bit about Shabri.
Shabri is a story of a spoilt woman in Mumbai city and how she is sandwiched between the mafia and the cops. It's my best ever role and it's directed by yet another debutant Lalit Marathe. He had written Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot.

So the entire journey of the Vivaah was smooth. Nothing went wrong?
Actually, it's good you mentioned this because one day on the sets I collapsed. I was dehydrated and was immediately taken to my dad's hospital.

We've been talking about Vivaah all this while. Let's get more serious. When do you plan to get married?
I really don't know. With six releases this year, definitely not. I've just got into a relationship and have started dating a guy. So will take a while. Having said that, we are very serious about each other and are planning to get married but not so soon. We haven't fixed any dates as of now but will keep you posted as soon as I'm ready.
