Actually this was in the news yesterday

Unable to cope with losses in the bear run of stock markets, a man killed his pregnant wife and then committed suicide in Mumbai, police said tonight.

The bodies of Parag Tanna and his wife Neha (both 34), who was seven to eight months pregnant, were found at their apartment in Iraniwadi area of suburban Kandivali, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) Makrand Ranade said.

"Parag was found hanging using a nylon rope while his wife was lying dead on the floor," he said.

The police suspect that Parag first strangled his wife and then committed suicide.

This was from a few days ago

MUMBAI: In an apparent case of suicide triggered by the global financial crisis, a Mumbai-based stockbroker, his wife and their two children were found dead in their flat on Sunday afternoon, a police official said.

The victims are A.K. Nair, a 77-year-old sharebroker, his wife Shyamala, 65, daughter Suchitra, 43, and son Sudhir, 42, the official from the Kasturba Marg police station said.

The bodies were found from their flat in the upscale Raheja Complex in Borivli (East), a suburb in northwest Mumbai, the official said.

According to preliminary investigations, it appears to be a case of mass suicide on account of financial calamities that befell the family in view of the recent crises in the stock markets, he said.

Indian techie's family found dead in US
31 Oct 2008, 0000 hrs IST, TNN
HYDERABAD: Barely three weeks after Karthik Rajaram killed his family before shooting himself, there seems to be another tragic fallout of the
global meltdown.

A Telugu software programmer, who lost his job recently, reportedly killed three members of his family in Detroit on Tuesday, even as the US federal police launched a manhunt for the 42-year-old man.

The bodies of Jayalakshmi Nerusu (37), her 14-year-old daughter Tejasvi and 12-year-old son Siva were found on the first floor of their residence at Wharton Court in Novi area, 20 km from Detroit.

"The accused, Lakshminivasa Rao Nerusu, caused grievous injuries on the head and neck areas of each victim," Novi police chief David E Molloy said, even as he described the crime scene as "very disturbing." An autopsy report said the victims were stabbed.

Investigators said the father lost his job recently and the family car was repossessed about a month ago. The police went to the house after a relative complained that he had not heard from the family for several days. Friends and relatives of the victims were interrogated by the police, but they could not draw any conclusions on the motive behind the murders.

Molloy said they have no record of domestic violence cases regarding the Nerusu family and insisted that Nerusu was only a 'person of interest' at this point of investigation. "The three victims had wounds on the arms, indicating that they tried to fend off the blows," Molloy said.

Jayalakshmi was a housewife, while Tejasvi and Siva were school students. Both the children were good at studies, said school officials. Sources said the Nerusu family had shifted to Novi area from Illinois last August. Unconfirmed reports said Rao had left for India on October 14.

If I am not mistaken the point you are trying to make here is We Indians do have escapism but we dont kill the rest of our families along with ourselves. It is not that you are questioning why the guy committed this but you are showing surprise at the fact it was an Indian. So the response is based upon that question
It has always been there with "Indians" too just perhaps you have not read/seen it
Like it happened in the days of Harshad Mehta go absconding, ditch the people you owe and let them face the music or jump off a building leaving the family to deal with the debtors
or
Like it happened in the dot com bubble burst when people parked their BMW's at the SFO airport and caught the next flight back to homeland leaving the folks over here doing it right to fight the uphill reputation battle all over again
Perhaps you are surprised at the fact that the guy actually got his family to take the easy route along with himself rather than doing it the usual way of leaving himself and letting his family face the music on their own. I really am not sure which one is worser, you seem to be saying one is better than the other
Regards the question, why it happened?
One fine day you lost everything that you and your family have been used to the life and now you have to start from scratch with a bruised ego. It sounds romantic in Hindi films or TV serials it is very hard to contemplate in real life and much much harder to actually live it, you rather would not put your family through all this. IMO it happens when the only real life personal crisis you have encountered in life is cramming for the educational exams

Very well said Sareg 👏 Totally agreee..
Rumer mill here in LA is the guy was bit weird-dhoony kind a guy to begin with...Lots of extremely intelligent people are sometimes weird....
Sad thing was he was planning this suicide mission so told his neighbor some story abt keeping windows closed due to burglary.....So they won't hear any gun shots...
He was not altogether mentally nor emotionally for a while.....
Don't have much more details on this but a very very sad story....
This can happen to anyone....not uncommon.....doesn't happen every day but surely can happen....

Its more than that.. India india such things happen within bounds of faitj combined with material debacles.. Which is why we even justify crime based on needs....if somebody is not getting food to survie he has a right to get it by any means. This country is supposed to get you ebyond that point of struggle.. and give you some new kind of things - life-style diseases... So the question here is why would a person take such an extreme step which more or less pre-mdefitated which discounts any reactionary happenings.. in dian many of such things happn in a rectionary manner.. where the person loses the state of balance and takes drastic incidences..... so thats why it gains more significance as to teh altering society and teh new attitude... biuzarre as it may appear... it will always shock us indias.. or should i say south asians... 😊
