Best Actor 2008
Ashutosh Gowariker's magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar has won the Grand Pix award at Golden Minbar, a festival for Muslim Cinema. It was held at Kazan, Russia. Closer home in Mumbai, the audiences are eagerly waiting for the award ceremonies which will happen early 2009.This year has been full of surprise hits. Films such as Race and Jannat have done well and much-hyped films like Kidnap, Love Story 2050 and Tashan have bitten the dust. But it's going to be a tough fight for the coveted trophies. Each actor has had at least one mega project lined up. And even if the film doesn't set the box-office on fire, the actors still hope to win an award.
Here's looking at the reasons why…
Hrithik Roshan had no releases to speak of in 2007. If Jodhaa Akbar had released on schedule last year; Shah Rukh Khan would not have walked away with all the awards. Aishwarya Rai's wedding (due to which Jodhaa… was delayed) worked in SRK's favour. But this year Hrithik is back and only too eager to make up for lost time.
Shah Rukh Khan makes no bones about his desire for awards. The more the merrier seems to be his motto. Initially, it seemed SRK had no scheduled releases but suddenly after Tashan Aditya Chopra went into overdrive. And voila! King Khan who claimed he was unemployed for the next six months has a huge Yash Raj film lined up. Since audiences accepted him in a new avatar for Chak De India there's no reason why Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi won't work. After all this is the team that gave us Dilwale… and Mohabbatein.
Salman Khan in all probability has forgotten when he last won an award. Apparently he stopped performing at functions because finally SRK, Aamir and Hrithik walk away with the honours and Salman comes home empty-handed. But this time round, Salman Khan is working with Subhash Ghai, the master craftsman. Salman Khan is really hoping to hit the bull's-eye with this one.
Abhishek Bachchan had mopped up practically all the awards for best supporting actor in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. This year, he's had Sarkar Raj (but unfortunately Ram Gopal Varma kept the focus on Amitabh Bachchan) and now Dostana is ready for release. Both Karan Johar and Abhishek Bachchan are upbeat about the film. And it's about time Bachchan Jr moved out of 'Supporting actor' category and came into his own.
Aamir Khan may turn down awards left, right and center but that doesn't prevent the organizers from giving him his due. And now with Aamir Khan's career moving in fifth gear he may not be averse to awards. Especially if it means stealing them from under Shah Rukh's nose. In all probability that's the reason why Ghajini is being readied for a year-end release.
Amitabh Bachchan the grand old man of Indian cinema is very much in the running. And even though detractors maintain he should hang up his boots, Bachchan has delivered two amazing performances Sarkar Raj and The Last Lear. Considering the 'superstars' SRK and Hrithik have just one film to their credit guess there's a lot of truth to the saying 'New is silver but…
