Golmaal Returns vs Fashion
One of the most awaited films this year are releasing on the same day. The face off that we all are waiting with bated breath for is the one between Fashion and Golmaal Returns on Diwali.
Usually it's actor versus actor at the box office. However, Diwali 2008's releases are riding on the delicate shoulders of saucy actresses:
Plot: Madhur Bhandarkar's tryst with reality continues as Fashion promises to uncover the naked truth and unscrupulous goings-on in the fashion industry. Fashion is the story of the life of 3 models played by Priyanka, Mugdha and Kangana showcasing their relationships with each other against the backdrop of the fashion world. Golmaal Returns looks like a colourful, over-the-top situational comedy with a very convoluted plot revolving around the suspicious Ekta played by Kareena Kapoor and hubby Gopal played by Ajay Devgan with Arshad Warsi, Anjana Sukhani, Amrita Arora, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitley thrown in for comical support.
Fashion: 8 on 10, Golmaal Returns: 6 on 10
Sex appeal: Fashion showcases Priyanka and Kangana Ranaut in their boldest roles yet. Priyanka has an intimate scene with co-star Arjan Bajwa and Kangana has a wardrobe malfunction scene. Both are also shown doping and smoking. Supermodel Mugdha Godse will strut her stuff in her Bollywood debut. The svelte Kareena Kapoor is the biggest and sexiest star of Golmaal Returns and looks like a vixen in the Meow song. The other actors simply lack sex appeal. Thank God, they haven't included Rimi who was the heroine in the first flick.
Fashion: 9 on 10, Golmaal Returns: 6 on 10
Director's track record: Rohit Shetty had some beginner's luck with the slapstick comedy Golmaal as it turned out to be a runaway hit. In my opinion, the movie was strictly okay and quite mindless. There is a lot more hype surrounding the second one because of the huge cast. National Award winner Madhur Bhandarkar's previous films Chandni Bar and Page 3 were smash critical and commercial hits, unleashing the secret lives of bargirls and socialites respectively. Corporate received a lukewarm response and Traffic Signal bombed at the BO.

Budget and Desperation: Fashion has a budget of 20 crore, which is the highest for a Bhandarkar film yet and Golmaal Returns has a budget of 40 crore which is 10 times more than the first flick. Bhandarkar really needs a hit to maintain his credibility as a director because his last two films didn't do well at the BO. Kareena Kapoor may be a star but Tashan bombed at the BO despite of her skin show and the star quotient of the film. If Golmaal is a hit, it might do wonders for the careers of the supporting cast comprising Celina, Tusshar, Anjana, Amrita and Shreyas. Fashion is Priyanka's fifth release this year and her track record is full of consecutive debacles like Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku and Drona, so she is hoping that Fashion is her long awaited dhamakedaar Diwali gift.
Fashion and Golmaal Returns: 7
Music: The music of Fashion is Salim-Sulaiman's finest score yet with songs like Mar Jaawa, Jalwa, Kuch Khaas, Aashiyaana and Theme of Fashion. It is the nicest and most soulful score to come from Bhandarkar's stable. For the first time, unlike his previous movies, the songs are hummable and likeable. Golmaal has the usual masala score by Pritam comprising a myriad songs and remixes like Thaa Karke (which is a lift from Gasolina and Hips Don't lie), Meow, Tu Saala and the old Golmaal track.

Controversy: The posters of Golmaal show the Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Shreyas Talpade and Kareena Kapoor is the only actress on the poster. We agree she looks absolutely stunning but don't the other actresses deserve a tiny place on the poster? Needless to say, the non-starry brigade are upset. Since day one, Fashion has been embroiled in controversies which revolve around Priyanka making Madhur wait for six months before she agreed to do the film, Kangana's malfunction scene, Priyanka's lovemaking scene, some intimate scenes between gay designers, Kangana being upset with Priyanka's prominence on the posters and whether or not Priyanka's and Kangana's characters are based on models Shivani Kapoor and Gitanjali Nagpal respectively. Moreover, Madhur was very upset about the film being given an Adult certificate.

Star Power: Rivals Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor will compete once again on October 29, 2008. The two are the biggest stars in their respective films. Priyanka is flanked by the slim and sensitive Kangana Ranaut and super hot model Mugdha Godse. Arjan Bajwa will be recognized only after Fashion. The flick also features 46 real life models and various designers. The script and Madhur Bhandarkar's directorial stamp are probably even bigger than the actors. Golmaal Returns has an ensemble cast but are we really bothered about anyone but Kareena Kapoor?(i so agree with this one...if i watch this movie it wil be becuz of kareena)

What to do: Fashion looks like a glamourous (read better production values) and no-holds-barred sequel to Page 3. If you like Madhur's realistic cinema, want to see Priyanka and Kangana in their finest performances yet and are itching to know what really goes on behind glossy doors in the fashion world, book your tickets for Fashion. If you liked the first Golmaal, are a fan of Kareena Kapoor and like mindless masala movies, go for Golmaal.
