Madhur Bhandarkar is furious as the Censor Board gave his upcoming film, Fashion an A certificate

A still from Fashion

National Award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar is furious and dejected. His most ambitious project Fashion will have a restricted audience as the Censor Board has granted an A certificate to the film.

The Censor Board saw Fashion last evening. After the screening, the board members categorically told Madhur that he can't even get a U/A certificate for this film if he does not delete at least six scenes, which they felt, were not fit for family viewing.

Due to this, Madhur and the Censor Board had a big showdown. Madhur also argued and tried to have his way, but the Censor Board did not relent.

Some of the scenes, which the Censor Board has raised an objection over are: Priyanka's lovemaking scene with Arjan Bajwa, Kangana's lovemaking scene with newcomer Deepak, and a few scenes where Priyanka-Kangana are smoking cigarettes and taking drugs.

But what's wrong if a film has some lovemaking scenes? An insider said, "A few lovemaking scenes filmed on Priyanka-Arjan and Kangana-Deepak are quite blatant. But they have mainly objected to Priyanka and Kangana shown taking drugs."

Madhur Bhandarkar

Vinayak Azad (Regional Officer, Censor Board) confirmed the news and said, "There are some very intimate scenes filmed on Kangana and Priyanka with their respective partners. Moreover, both the actresses also are shown as drug addicts. While Priyanka is shown snorting cocaine, Kangana is shown snorting cocaine and taking a heroin injection too. I think the film should only be seen by those who are more than 15-years old."

When contacted, Madhur said irately, "I had a lengthy discussion with the censors. I have depicted reality. I have even shown a rave party in the film. I have shown Ranvir Shorey taking drugs in Traffic Signal. Didn't Bipasha make love to Kay Kay Menon in my film Corporate? Didn't Page 3 have a rave party? But none of these films were given an A certificate? So why this holier than thou attitude now?"

However, Vinayak said, "The visuals of taking drugs in Fashion are too blatant. We couldn't let it go with a U/A certificate in this state."

Even though Fashion has an A certificate, Madhur has decided to not appeal to the Revising Committee. After coming out of the Censor Board office, Madhur spoke to Ronnie Screwvala, co-producer of Fashion.

Madhur said, "Ronnie and I have to take it in our stride. There is little we can do about it. We are not appealing to the Revising Committee. We have only 15 days to go and we have to release 700 prints. Do we have any time left?"

Fashion, co-produced by UTV and Bhandarkar Entertainment, will release on October 29.

Sounds as if the film is going to be very realistic.......it's not going to go down very well with some members of the fashion industryšŸ˜†

Can not wait for this movie!! I'm older than 15..just!! Definitly seeing one way or another. I agree with Madhur; not just his films but other films have also had love making scenes and still been a U or atleast a 12. Well..i guess u wouldn't expect parents to take theirkids to this film anyways so Madhur hasn't really lost much of his audience!!

I love Madhur's films because it's just like Bigg Boss, full of gossips and inside storiesšŸ˜›. He portrays real people in such a way that they can't even sue themšŸ˜†.

Shyam Benegal, Maureen Wadia, Vijay Mallya etc. are some of the names in Page 3. In fashion we will probably see more of Maureen Wadia as she conducts Ms. India and Gladrags manhunt. More goss on designers too.

Kangana's character is based on Gitanjali Nagpal.
Former model Gitanjali Nagpal worked as a maid, spent her nights with men for money to quell her craving for drugs and was in the end reduced to a life on the footpath (PTI Photo)

NEW DELHI: In the '90s, Gitanjali Nagpal sashayed down the catwalks of Delhi with the likes of Sushmita Sen. A Navy officer's daughter who went to Lady Shri Ram College, she seemed set for a flashbulb career in fashion.

On Sunday, they found her living off the streets and spending her nights in parks and temples. And by Monday, she was being hounded by TV cameramen, reporters and do-gooders. Gitanjali's sad story had just taken yet another weird turn.

It's a horrifying story of the dark side of glamour: how one false move can send a promising career to a downward spiral of drugs and self-destruction. By her own admission, the ex-Mount Carmel student worked as a maid, spent her nights with men for money to quell her craving for drugs and alcohol and was in the end reduced to a life on the footpath.

Gitanjali's estranged husband lives in Germany with her child. And, touchingly, he still waits for her. When Metro Now , TOI's sister newspaper, first spotted her in South Delhi's Hauz Khas village and started taking her photographs, Gitanjali slid the T-shirt down her shoulders like a seasoned model and posed in style. She promised to model even better for a reward: a swim in a five-star hotel.

But after the story was published on Monday, Gitanjali was back among the flashbulbs. In an ironical twist, she was chased by TV reporters, shepherded by Delhi Commission for Women and taken in a Qualis first to a police station and then to Vimhans, a hospital that deals with mental health.

Gitanjali, still striking with her matted dreadlocks and wearing a black corsette and long skirt that seemed to have all the colours of rainbow, didn't get down from the car. Rather, she abused people who approached her. Three psychiatrists talked to her in the car. They later said she had poor hygiene, had rashes all over and was irritable.

Dude, for this genre of the film, i think its kinda important [not in a sick way] to have those scenes in the film just to show the reality of things of the fashion world..or else it'll look just like a walt disney productions šŸ¤”

This is terrible. It's really sad how life can turn out for some people. What touched me the most is the fact that her estranged husband is still waiting for her. I really hope she can get her life back on track and God willing, re-unite with her husband and her child.

That's really sad about Gitanjali, but unfortunately it is quite common. Kangana and Gitanjali actually look quite similar in some photo's.......

I hope he has done justice in portraying the fashion industry, because if done correctly this film will make waves outside India. Hopefully, it's not just about sex and drugs, other issues such as size 0, awful living conditions, suicide etc are mentioned. There is alot that people don't know about the industry and it's not glamourous at all.

Definitely not one for kids!

^^ I completely agree with you. It's not only about sex and drugs, there's much more to the Fashion world and far less glamourous than many people think. I really hope that the film gives the real portrayal of the fashion industry and how it really is from within. But yes, it isn't a film for the kids! So true about the Kangana- Gitanjali resemblance as well....esp. because of the hair.

Madhur does tend to sensationalize and try to take a moral high ground with things or try to paint things as black and white. That being said expecting things to be shown as more gray may be asking for too much. That being said, I definitely don't mind watching his films. They do focus on things not being covered in most of the other Hindi films.
