He has to think about how awful his parents and friends feel when they look at him. It makes them miserable too and he has no right to do that.

Tell him that you understand that it's awfully hard to forget a person you love but life has to go on with or without the people we love. Just because she left him, doesn't mean that there isn't anyone else in the world who loves him because obviously there are. If he doesn't want to live happily for himself then he has to do that for his family and friends. A little bit of emotional blackmailing sometimes does wonders especially in cases like this when people are torn by the end of a relationship.

But, you also need to give him some time. Time does heal all the wounds, so I am sure it'll help your friend too.

I have told him that he is a lucky man to be honest, what would had happened if she had run away after him getting married or relation gone to seriousness. This is not the end of the world.
