Tell me 1 thing, Why should we expect the Indian Olympians to win medals?
If the government does not do anything to promote sports in India and provide the required facilities, why should we expect them to glorify the country by winning the medals???
I know even the government has more things to think abt than sports...so they can do little to help...thats where the citizens should step up and do something..! But the ordinary Indians, like me, don't do anything to encourage sports..
We Indians don't think of anything except cricket. Hello People!!! There is more than Cricket in this world!
I don't say Cricket is bad or they should stop playing cricket...but c'mon...there are many games than Cricket.
Cricket is managed by an independent board like the BCCI.....thats y they get so many funds...I think if there was a seperate board to manage sports in the country, it will be beneficial...
The media...even we...blame the athletes always that don't get any medals and all that.....but how will they improve if there are no good sporting equipments...grounds....facilities...?😕
It is also based on talent of course...but even if the athletes win gold or silver or bronze...they are not given the respect and attention that they deserve..
Dhyan Chand...a veryyyyyy good hockey player under whom India has won the maximum Golds in the Olympics died in a general ward in the AIIMS....and how many of us know that his birthday August 29 is celebrated as a Sports Day in India?
So many Olympians from India were forced to run rickshaws...become carpenters...ok..i am exaggerating a bit...but it is sorta true...
If we are the ones to discourage sports in India, then why blame the poor athletes who represent their country in the Olympics?
There are always two sides of a debate...thats y we debate!
these were my thoughts on the whole issue...jaspal rana was in ndtv talking abt the medals thing...so i thought of posting my thoughts on the same too...

well if they dont want to win medals then why go to the olympics?
yes , you are right to an extent that the govt doesnt do anything to promote sports other than cricket but the blame should also go to the athletes.
We indians lack the killer instinct, the drive to acheive, we are well content to follow orders and work below someone thats it.
The only solution I see is to incorprate sports in schools and give them equal importance. If a person is talented in sports, encourage him in that path. Thats what they do abroad, their main concentration is not in degrees and jobs alone, they give importance to the childs interests.
We are so focussed on academics that we fail to understand that there are many who may not be academic but might be great in other activities like sports or arts, we never have any encouragement for that.
In America, we have schools and institutions and special courses for people who are interested in creative arts .
yes, we lack the funds but then again at the same time, we lack the motivation and the killer instinct to go out there to win. I mean if you tell me that out of one billion people, not one is capable of winning a gold medal, thats ridiculous.
We expect them to win coz they went to the olympics representing our country. If you dont want to win then dont participate.
Corruption, movies and politics rule the nation and unless that changes, our countyr wont improve.

Everything needs a start.. Lets see how much Abhinav can influence others..

Its very easy to point fingers at others.. Today Gill has said, its much more than winning the 20-20 world cup.. Common, how can he compare a olympic gold medal to a 20-20 world cup???

All these praise, awards will go on for say another one month and later it wl be only cricket which will be given importance.. In a way even the people are to be blamed.. They understand cricket easily and is played all over the country so its been hyped..

Very proud out of 56 we finally 1 got GOLD *CLAPS ... very nice Abhinav *CLAPS.

Olympics is not a high paid event, it's an oppurtunity for aspiring individuals to make the country proud as well as sieze the oppurtunity to make it big for themselves. Olympics is just a begining :)

I agree with the topic starter here....
We have no right to expect medals from Olympians... tell me how many of us support these athletes... I mean swimmers or shooters or badminton players? Our definition of sports is cricket and tennis... that's it... how many of us knew someone called Abhinav Bindra existed before he won a medal?? We start praising them only when they get a medal...
And the biggest fault is our government.... what they do in the name of providing sport facilities is a joke... I was reading an article related to Abhinav and found this...
This is what our Govt. does in the name of sport promotion... if Abhinav did not have a wealthy family to support him.... he also would be been a part of team who we say lack killer instinct... where will that instinct come from when players have so many other things to worry about.... they have to worry about feeding their family b'coz just practicing 24/7 is not going to feed them... have to worry about completing their studies b'coz that is a must in our society... also they need to have some alternative if their career in sports does not pay.... sports is always "extra-curricular" in India... it's sad but true... and we as a part of society are also to be blamed along with the system...
There is a swimmer called Virdhawal Khade in this Beijing Olympic team... I read one of his interview.... he said he is studying in Mumbai and has to go to Bangalore for training... the distance is so much that he goes only once or twice a year for training... and when I heard about USA's star swimmer Michel Phelps... he says all he does is eat, sleep and swim... so much of difference in the situation... obviously there will be difference in the performance...
The only way out I see is Corporate sopport... sopnsorers like Tatas and Ambanis can help these budding athletes b'coz depending just on Govt. is not enough... also we as a public should also do our bit by supporting these young talent in sports other than cricket and tennis.... b'coz public support and backing also helps to get that killer instinct to perform best and make all the supporters proud....
