Mumbai: After assisting Aamir in Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par, Kiran Rao is now setting out to direct her first project. Titled Dhobi Ghaat, it will be produced under her own production house titled Cinema 73 (after the year she was born in).
It is learnt that even though Cinema 73 will be Kiran's baby, it will still come under the umbrella of Aamir Khan Productions.

Sources reveal that Kiran, a huge fan of documentaries and foreign cinema, is planning to make a very real film. Dhobi Ghaat, will be shot in various parts of the city and have a mix of actors and non-actors. "It's a novel idea which probably hasn't been tried before.
Kiran is currently working on the casting as the script is ready. The film will touch different social issues."
Even though there is buzz that Aamir might be a part of the film, the source adds that Kiran hasn't cast him. She doesn't want his presence in the film to take the attention away from the subject Hubby Aamir has mentioned that he will be supporting the project but Kiran will take all the major decisions.
Alternative cinema
It is learnt that while Kiran's first project might slide in the direction of alternative cinema, she does have plans to get into mainstream commercial films.
