Can anyone explain what it was about shows back then? Was it the colour palette? The cinematography? Surely they didn’t have much money back then, yet somehow the shows looked so much better. 😂

14 crores just being wasted on Green Screen Tulsi.

Tripti hasn’t changed her attire in 20 episodes, and her entry into their house looked so lame. Raunak and Samira look so bland compared to Manthan and Bhoomi. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about the show just isn’t right.

Ekta delayed S2 because of the set, even though the sets themselves look so bland. The sets in KGGK, Kyunki and Kasautii had a completely different vibe. They felt immersive and actually added to the stories. More importantly, those shows had compelling storylines.

And why bring villains back if they’re not going to be written the way villains used to be? Ansh’s return could have lasted much longer, but his exit was so poorly executed. Even Tripti’s return feels underwhelming. Where are the sharp, memorable dialogues? She’s just standing there delivering the most basic lines.

Star Plus is honestly lacking in so many areas right now.

Is all the money going towards Tulsi? Is that why even Amar seems annoyed? 😭

Boring episode. Can/should be skipped.

Nothing of consequence happened tonight.

Multiple factors.

Shows felt original back then because technically in a way they were. Don’t forget Ekta introduced this whole genre back then before which Indian TV shows were actually coherent and not this absurd fest.

The main leads were almost always perfectly cast. Think of popular shows from back then and be it TuHir, AnuPre, Pratham Gauri, Sujal Kashish and even non Balaji shows like Kumkum had some really fantastic casting. The leads looked great, their acting was decent and more importantly their chemistry clicked. Even a show like KGGK has Om Parvati as a pair that works despite them not exactly being romantic leads.

Somehow all the characters seemed fresh and original. There was also a distinct and yet fresh personality to how they looked. Nandini’s styling was different from Tulsi’s who looked different from Prerna and Kashish looked absolutely different.

Then there were the vamps - Komolika, Ramola, Payal, Mandira, Pallavi - all these ladies could actually ACT! You knew you didn’t want them to win but they were so good at their job and also looked pretty that you enjoyed watching them. You never knew what Komolika or Ramola would look like and that was half their appeal but even when vamps were not fashionistas like them they could deliver and sold their characters.

Shows back then had characters who were played by actors who could deliver regardless of what kind of roles they played. Most actors were either veterans from stage, had worked in films and TV shows or were youngsters who had cracked the auditions by beating out hundreds if not thousands of candidates vying for the role. They weren’t picked up from social media based on the number of followers but genuine talent.

The music, direction and storytelling was actually a lot more better than anything today. Shows had their own signature original tunes meant for different occasions. I am sure we all can still hum the title songs of not just Kyunki but KZK, KGGK, KTH, Kutumb etc. Their OG songs were also good and we enjoyed them.

The shows weren’t predictable or even if they were they managed to be enjoyable and entertaining. Today they all seem dull. Shows back then even had tracks that would shock us and become conversation starters be it with the Ansh track in Kyunki or the whodunnit track of who assaulted Mukti. Now nothing is shocking because we get social media updates even before we see it on TV.

Studios as well as real locations were used and the whole CGI/AI/Green Screen wasn’t even a thing. I would understand if they used it as a means to enhance a shot or even for some action scenes so as to minimise the chances of injury to actors and stunt artists alike for some dangerous scenes but I am genuinely baffled by the use of this stuff to show Mihir Tulsi enjoying pani puri at a roadside stall and such mundane stuff. Are we really supposed to believe that there wasn’t any space in the studio where Kyunki is shot where they could have realistically shown us Mihir Tulsi enjoying pani puri at some random street vendor’s stall?!

Beyond all of this - back then most of us didn’t have multiple TVs or even mobile phones at home. Now we do. These shows were family time and we have memories of watching them sometimes with dinner, sometimes post dinner as something to chill out with before bedtime. Our attention spans were much better and we hadn’t been as exposed to global content. Today most everyone is busy watching their own stuff or hearing it even when having dinner. There’s no single TV experience where the whole family watches the same thing regardless of whether everyone enjoys it or not. Today we all have our own preferences for entertainment and we don’t have anything to share with anyone even across the dining table. We could all laugh at the same thing back then, love and hate the same characters, discuss the fashion choices of Komolika that were so outrageous that not everyone dared to be as risqué as her or were absolutely stunning and chic as what Kashish wore that we wanted to buy the exact same outfit that she wore. There are no more fashion icons on TV and there are no characters that seem consistent.

The content has lost its standards and we have lost the viewing experience. What’s left is nostalgia for what once was which we know today is atrocious in terms of quality of writing but is fondly remembered because of the memories and because it seems like gold in comparison to what we have today. Back then we weren’t spoiled for choices, but today every choice is spoiled as content sucks mostly no matter from where and what. There are hardly any worthwhile shows or even books these days compared to what we had nearly two decades ago.
