Was someone responsible for splitting them apart? Is that the person watching and waiting?

They will be judges for the competition and will come face to face. He knows now. Does she?

**Chapter 3**

**So Close... Yet So Far**

Mumbai woke to another beautiful morning.

The city was already alive.

People rushed to work.

Street vendors arranged fresh flowers.

Local trains thundered past crowded platforms.

Life moved on.

As it always did.

Yet for two people living in the same city again...

Time had quietly begun moving backwards.

---

Reyansh Dance Studios

The academy buzzed with excitement.

Posters announcing the **National Dance Excellence Championship** decorated every hallway.

Students whispered excitedly.

"Did you hear?"

"They've invited international judges this year!"

"I heard one of them is Kriya Ghai."

"No way! The Kriya Ghai?"

"I've watched all her performances online!"

Inside his office, Rey stood before the large window, his coffee untouched.

His gaze rested on the folder lying on his desk.

He had read the same page at least twenty times.

**Kriya Ghai.**

The name alone was enough to stir memories he had spent years trying to bury.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Swayam entered carrying two cups of coffee.

"I figured yours had gone cold."

Rey smiled faintly.

"You know me too well."

"I have to."

Swayam placed the fresh cup on the desk before sitting opposite him.

"You've been staring at that file since yesterday."

Rey remained silent.

"You know she's coming."

Another silence.

"Does it bother you?"

Rey looked away.

"I don't know."

"That's a lie."

"I spent ten years convincing myself I'd moved on."

"And?"

"And now her name is enough to make me question everything."

Swayam leaned back.

"You still love her."

Rey chuckled bitterly.

"Love doesn't disappear just because people do."

---

Across the city...

Sharon's apartment.

The morning sunlight streamed through the curtains.

Kriya stood barefoot on the balcony, holding a steaming cup of tea.

The cool breeze carried familiar sounds.

The distant honking of taxis.

Children laughing.

Someone practicing dance counts in a nearby studio.

Mumbai.

She had missed it more than she had admitted.

Behind her, Sharon walked into the balcony.

"Couldn't sleep?"

Kriya smiled.

"Jet lag."

"Liar."

Kriya laughed softly.

"You still know me."

"I always will."

Sharon handed her a small envelope.

"The organizers sent today's schedule."

Kriya opened it.

Press conference.

Judge introductions.

Venue inspection.

Meet-and-greet.

She froze.

At the bottom of the page...

**Chief Judge**

**Mr. Reyansh Singhania**

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

"So..."

she whispered.

"It's really happening."

Sharon nodded.

"You still have time."

"Time for what?"

"To decide whether you're ready."

Kriya folded the schedule carefully.

"I'm not."

"But I'll have to be."

---

By noon...

The organizing committee had arranged a formal luncheon for all judges and sponsors at the luxurious Grand Meridian Hotel.

The ballroom shimmered with crystal chandeliers.

Media photographers moved around capturing every moment.

Guests greeted one another warmly.

Rey arrived with Swayam.

Across the city...

Another car stopped outside the same hotel.

Kriya stepped out beside Sharon.

She looked up at the grand entrance.

Her heart pounded.

"I can do this," she whispered.

Sharon squeezed her hand.

"You're not alone."

They walked inside.

---

Inside the ballroom...

Guests filled the hall.

Rey stood speaking with sponsors.

Kriya entered through another entrance.

Only two corridors separated them.

One turn.

One moment.

One glance.

That was all fate needed.

But fate wasn't ready yet.

An organizer hurried toward Rey.

"Mr. Singhania, could you please join us backstage?"

"Of course."

Rey walked away.

At that exact moment...

Kriya stepped into the ballroom.

She looked around.

Something made her stop.

She didn't know why.

But she could feel it.

He was here.

Somewhere nearby.

Her heartbeat echoed loudly.

Almost instinctively...

She turned toward the stage entrance.

Only to see it closing behind someone dressed entirely in black.

She couldn't see his face.

Only his broad shoulders.

The familiar way he walked.

She unconsciously took one step forward.

"Rey..."

The name escaped her lips like a forgotten prayer.

Before she could move again, journalists surrounded her.

"Ms. Ghai!"

"Welcome back to India!"

"How does it feel returning after ten years?"

"Ma'am, one photograph please!"

She forced herself to smile.

By the time she looked toward the stage again...

The doorway was empty.

---

Backstage...

Rey signed a few documents before glancing absentmindedly toward the ballroom.

From where he stood, he could only see flashes of cameras.

Someone was being photographed.

The organizers smiled proudly.

"Our international judge has arrived."

Rey's eyes instinctively searched the crowd.

But a group of reporters blocked his view.

An assistant approached.

"Sir, the press conference begins in five minutes."

Rey nodded.

"Let's go."

---

Elsewhere in the hotel...

Sharon watched everything unfold.

She had seen Rey disappear backstage.

She had watched Kriya enter from the opposite side.

She closed her eyes briefly.

"So close..."

she murmured.

"...and still ten years apart."

Swayam, who had just entered from another hallway, overheard her.

Their eyes met.

Neither needed to ask.

They both understood.

Destiny was testing them.

Again.

---

Late that evening...

Rey returned to the academy.

Exhausted.

He loosened his tie and entered Studio One.

The room was dark.

Only the moonlight filtered through the tall windows.

He walked toward the old piano in the corner.

On top of it lay a small music player.

Without thinking...

He pressed play.

A familiar instrumental melody filled the studio.

It was the same tune Rey and Kriya had once danced to in college.

He closed his eyes.

Memories flooded back.

Laughter.

Arguments.

Competitions.

Late-night rehearsals.

Promises.

Love.

Suddenly...

A soft voice echoed behind him.

"You still listen to this?"

Rey's eyes flew open.

His heart skipped a beat.

He turned around immediately.

But there was no one.

Only an elderly caretaker stood at the doorway.

"Sir?"

Rey blinked.

"Yes?"

"I was asking if you still wanted the lights off."

For a moment...

He had been certain...

He had heard Kriya.

He smiled sadly.

"No."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I guess I just miss her."

---

At the same time...

Kriya stood alone in Sharon's guest room.

She carefully unpacked her suitcase.

Between neatly folded clothes lay a small wooden box.

She opened it slowly.

Inside were old photographs.

A friendship band.

A dance medal.

Movie tickets.

And one carefully preserved letter.

The letter Rey had written to her on their final day at St. Louis.

She traced his handwriting with trembling fingers.

A tear fell onto the paper.

"I never stopped loving you, Rey."

Outside the room...

Sharon quietly watched her from the doorway.

She whispered to herself,

"Enough secrets."

"It's time the truth comes out."

But neither of them noticed...

A shadow standing across the street.

Hidden inside a parked car.

Watching the apartment.

Watching Kriya.

Watching.

Waiting.

The stranger slowly raised a camera.

**Click.**

A photograph was taken.

Then another.

And another.

Before driving away into the darkness.

**To Be Continued...**
