The rule is surely a weird one but I guess the batsman is punished for being careless and absent minded. In today's as well as previous match Sai was a bit careless and couldn't try to catch the bat when it slipped. Last time he wanted to take a run which was silly because the ball had already crossed the boundary line. Today it was pure carelessness on his part. He should have tried to catch the bat.
