Actor Taapsee Pannu has spoken candidly about body image pressures and the growing obsession with achieving a perfectly flat stomach. Through a series of Instagram Stories, the actor encouraged women to avoid chasing unrealistic beauty standards often promoted on social media.
Sharing her personal experience, Taapsee revealed that she once struggled to understand why lower belly fat remained despite maintaining a high level of fitness. She admitted that the desire to achieve a flatter midriff pushed her towards intense workouts.
“I had to speak about this obsession of having a flat midriff. I remember I had this obsession because while growing up I was extremely fit but I never understood why the lower belly fat always stayed. I worked out intensely almost to an extent that I over pushed myself,” she said.
The actor explained that excessive exercise can sometimes have the opposite effect. According to her, when the body feels stressed, it may begin retaining water and storing additional protection around vulnerable areas.
Taapsee also highlighted that every woman's body functions differently and that hormonal changes can affect physical appearance from day to day. She stressed that comparing one's body to someone else's often creates unnecessary pressure. “It cannot look like any other girl so you need to accept this. I accepted it very late after really torturing myself and then I realized that there are some days it happens and there are some days it doesn’t happen,” she shared.
The actor further credited nutritionist for helping her understand the importance of lower belly fat and water retention. According to Taapsee, she learned that a small amount of fat in that area plays a protective role for reproductive organs.
Encouraging women to prioritise health over appearance, she urged them not to put themselves through extreme routines simply to meet social media expectations. “It is healthy for you so just to get those picture perfect Instagram pictures please don’t torture yourself. It’s supposed to be healthy to have that bulge and to have that little bit of fat there. Please don’t torture yourself,” she added.
Taapsee’s comments have resonated with many online, reigniting discussions around body positivity, fitness culture and unrealistic beauty standards often amplified through social media platforms.
