With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Rajasthan Royals (RR) need a complete turnaround against the out-of-contention Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday to stay alive in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL).

At the high-scoring Sawai Mansingh Stadium, RR are yet to win this season, making their final home fixture a do-or-die clash.

Their last league game is also against a struggling side, Mumbai Indians.

The month of May has rarely been kind to Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. With only four wins and 14 defeats in 19 matches, the Royals have consistently struggled through the business end of the tournament.

They will hope to reverse that trend when they take on a nothing-to-lose Lucknow Super Giants side in Jaipur, with the home team's playoffs hopes riding on this game.

With six wins and as many defeats, the Royals sit sixth on the table with 12 points and still have multiple qualification scenarios in play ahead of their remaining fixtures against LSG and Mumbai Indians. Two wins will take them to 16 points, which should be enough to secure a playoff spot outright if only one of Sunrisers Hyderabad or Chennai Super Kings reaches the 16-point mark.

If CSK win both their remaining games and SRH beat RCB, qualification could come down to net run rate. The Royals could also sneak through with 14 points, provided several other results fall in their favour.

Royals head into this game on the back of a hat-trick of defeats, two of which have come against Delhi Capitals. They have also lost their last three home matches, piling further pressure on the side. Yashasvi Jaiswal's dip in returns, the lower middle order's lack of runs, and their struggles with the ball in the Powerplay have all contributed to the slide.

After winning five of their first seven games, the Royals have managed just one victory in their last five and will be desperate to halt the slump and build momentum heading into the back end of the competition.

Although they are out of the playoffs race, LSG have shown some improvement in recent matches. Mitchell Marsh's imperious form has had a lot to do with that, with the Australian T20 captain posting scores of 111 off 56 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and 90 off 38 against CSK.

Josh Inglis also did well in the other game against CSK, which augurs well at the top of the order for LSG. The bowlers have been effective too, contributing towards LSG winning two of their last three games, even if the upturn has arrived a little too late in the tournament.

What to expect: High-scoring contests have been the norm here, with first-innings totals exceeding 220 in all three matches at the venue this season. Two of those totals were successfully chased down by visiting sides - SRH and DC - while RR were the only team to fall short in a chase, against Gujarat Titans, making it 0-3 for them here this season.

Six of the 10 matches here in the IPL since 2025 have been won by the chasing side - four of them being 200-plus chases. Another run-fest could be on the cards.

Head to head: RR have a 5-2 lead over LSG in matches involving these two sides. However, LSG have an advantage in Jaipur, having won two out of three games.

The upcoming clash will be a reverse fixture between the two sides, with RR having emerged victorious in their previous meeting earlier this season.

RR currently sit sixth in the points table with 12 points from 12 matches. Their recent defeat against Delhi Capitals proved costly, as it pushed them down from fifth position and further complicated their playoff hopes. With the race for the top four intensifying, Rajasthan cannot afford another setback.

On the other hand, Lucknow Super Giants have endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. With only four wins from 12 matches, they are currently placed at the bottom of the points table and have already been eliminated from the playoff race. However, despite being out of contention, LSG still have the opportunity to play spoilers in the tournament.

One of the most exciting contests will be between Mitchell Marsh and Jofra Archer. However, RR possess a strong weapon in Jofra Archer, who has been sensational with the ball this season. The English speedster has claimed 17 wickets in 12 matches and has consistently delivered breakthroughs at crucial moments. Archer’s pace and ability to swing the new ball make him a dangerous opponent for Marsh.

Another key battle to watch will be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi versus Mohammed Shami. The 15-year-old sensation has emerged as one of the most fearless batters of IPL 2026. Vaibhav has smashed 486 runs in 12 matches at a staggering strike rate of 234.78, including a memorable century. His attacking mindset from the very first ball has troubled bowlers throughout the tournament.

LSG will depend on the experienced Mohammed Shami to counter the young star. Despite taking only 10 wickets this season, Shami’s disciplined line and length and ability to move the ball in the early overs make him a serious threat.

The contest between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prince Yadav could also prove crucial. Jaiswal has scored 327 runs in 12 games and has provided stability at the top for Rajasthan. Although he has struggled for consistency in recent matches, RR will hope he returns to form in this important fixture.

On the other hand, Prince Yadav has quietly impressed for LSG with 16 wickets in 12 matches, delivering breakthroughs whenever needed. His battle against Jaiswal in the powerplay could set the tone for the innings and may ultimately influence the result of the game.
