CSK must fill Overton-sized hole against LSG

With four wins in their last five games, CSK have climbed to fifth place, but must now find a solution for another injury problem

IPL 2026 has not been kind to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It feels like every time they get up this season, an injury blow knocks them down. Jamie Overton's thigh injury is the latest such blow after he had produced a Player-of-the-Match winning performance in their previous game, also against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who have been knocked out of the playoffs race.

In addition to taking 14 wickets, Overton was economical in the middle and death overs, and also chipped in with crucial runs down the order. Just as CSK were gathering steam, with four wins in their last five games to climb to fifth place, his injury leaves them with the challenge of readjusting their team combination for three fixtures that will make or break their playoff chances. CSK have coped with injury problems all through this season. Nathan Ellis got injured before IPL 2026 started. Dewald Brevis missed three games at the start. Khaleel Ahmed began the campaign well, but he too was ruled out. Then with Ayush Mhatre. And now Overton.

CSK have had strong performances from their top order, but their middle has been soft, with Brevis and Shivam Dube unable to make the impact expected of them. Overton, striking at 158.13 this season, has often helped CSK finish strong. With no other proven allrounder in the squad, CSK will likely have to compromise on either their batting depth or bowling strength to replace Overton.

Pitch and conditions

The game will be played on Pitch no. 4, which has hosted two low-scoring games in IPL 2026. LSG have struggled on this particular track this year, getting bowled out for 141 and 119 in those matches, with both ending in defeat. Fast bowlers accounted for 23 of the 30 wickets that fell in those games. In all IPL games since 2024 on this track, spinners have been only marginally more economical than fast bowlers (economy rate of 9.35 for spinners vs 9.51 for fast bowlers).

Team Watch:

Lucknow Super Giants

Injuries/Availability: Mohsin Khan, injured currently, is expected to be unavailable for this fixture

Tactics & Matchups:

Shahbaz Ahmed got the better of Ruturaj Gaikwad again in the last game, making it three dismissals in just five T20 meetings between the pair. It's a matchup to watch out for once more.

Probable XII: Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c&wk), Aiden Markram, Akshat Raghuwanshi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Himmat Singh, Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan/Mayank Yadav, Digvesh Rathi, Prince Yadav

Chennai Super Kings

Injuries/Availability: MS Dhoni remains unavailable, while Jamie Overton has officially been ruled out of IPL 2026 and replaced by Dian Forrester

Tactics & Matchups:

Mitchell Marsh struck a superb ton against RCB at this venue in the last game and will be a key wicket at the top of the order. CSK have just the matchup player in Akeal Hosein, who has dismissed Marsh twice and conceded just 61 runs off 52 balls bowled across T20s.

Probable XII: Sanju Samson (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Akeal Hosein, Prashant Veer, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Mukesh Choudhary, Spencer Johnson

When: LSG vs CSK, IPL 2026, May 15 at 19:30 IST

Where: BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow

What to expect: Temperatures will remain in the mid 30s even during the game start time with not a spot of rain on the radar. After a bunch of low-scoring games, the last contest here, LSG vs RCB, saw in excess of 400 runs scored in 38 overs of play.

Qualification Watch: CSK can go past SRH if they win by at least 32 runs or chase down the target in 16 overs or fewer. Assuming a first innings score of 170 in either case (Avg 1st inns score in Lucknow in IPL 2026 has been 166)

IPL 2026: Match 59, LSG vs CSK Match Prediction (Source:IPL/BCCI)

In the spotlight: Rishabh Pant and Urvil Patel

Since he broke the auction record and took over as LSG captain in 2025, Rishabh Pant's win rate is only 30% - the lowest among IPL captains who have led in at least ten games in that period. This year, with just three wins in 11 games, LSG are in a battle with MI to avoid finishing last. Pant's returns with the bat have also diminished. He has crossed the 50-run mark just three times in 24 innings for LSG. He has shown in the past that he is a better captain than this, with a win percentage of 55.18 at Delhi Capitals, and LSG need him to find his mojo if they are to keep faith in their skipper next year.

CSK had retained Urvil Patel after he made 68 runs in three games at a strike rate of 212.5 as an injury replacement in 2025. After a quiet start to his IPL 2026 campaign against Gujarat Titans, he has put up scores of 24 off 12, 17 off 9 and 65 off 23 to repay the faith shown in him and nail down the No. 3 spot. The last - and best - of those knocks came against LSG, with Urvil hitting eight sixes and two fours to set up CSK's first successful 200-plus chase since 2018.

Mitchel Marsh

LSG vs CSK: Probable Best Performers of the Match

Probable Best Batter: Mitchell Marsh

Australian opener Mitchell Marsh has been the only batter in the LSG unit who has not been asked to change his original batting position, and the move is yielding rewards now. Marsh has picked up his form with the bat, smashing 377 runs in 11 matches at an average of 34.27 and striking the ball fiercely at 150.80. He also accounted for a brilliant century in the encounter against RCB, which is an indication of the kind of touch he finds himself in at the moment.

Anshul Kamboj

Probable Best Bowler: Anshul Kamboj

Anshul Kamboj

Ace pacer Anshul Kamboj has been one of the primary reasons that CSK have been able to stage a comeback in IPL 2026 despite a sedated start. With a solid record of 19 wickets in just 11 matches thus far, Kamboj is a serious contender in the Purple Cap race as well, while being the most successful bowler for the Super Kings this season. His four overs will be crucial in determining Chennai's fate at the Ekana surface.
