CHAPTER 2
Seher entered the house dead tired after the double shiftand saw Amaal lounging on the sofa in the hall.
“College nahin gayi?” she asked her little sister.
“Suna Nahin about the protests? Unlike you I don’t haveclasses on holidays.” Amal replied flipping her hair a little dramatically.
“Amaal, aapi ko tang mat karein.” Dr Fareed said coming intothe room.
It looked like he had also just come home and changed. Sehergreeted him with a smile.
“Inko doctors ka mushkil life samajh nahin aayega, Seher.Aap jaake change karke aao. Aapki ammi ki khaane ki kushboo aa rahi hai.”Fareed told her.
With a quick nod and poking her tongue out at her sister,Seher headed upstairs to her room. It wasn’t just her life that her marriageand divorce had ended up changing but her family’s too. She and her mother hadended up with a life they both never imagined.
The day Mahid had thrown her out of his house, her fatherhad taken her back home cursing her all along the way but she could barelyprocess any of it. She had sat there numb till she saw her mother. She flewinto her mother’s arms crying her heart out while her clueless mother asked herfather what had happened to her.
“Mahid miyaan divorced your daughter. Manhoos ladki. Niyazikhandaan mein apni jagah Nahin bana payi. Bewakoof. “ her father bellowed.
Her stepmother started the theatrics in the background.
“Its all your fault Kausar Bhaji. You have made her justlike you. She couldn’t keep him happy.” Safiya said pushing Seher over theedge.
“Bas Chotti Ammi. You will not say a word against my mother.“ Seher shouted shocking Safiya.
“My mother has been a good wife and mother. Its not herfault but your husband’s. He lied to Mahid about my age knowing Mahid wasagainst marrying a underage girl.” Seher continued.
Her father was fuming. He was about to strike her when hermother threw herself between them.
“Don’t touch my daughter. There will be severeconsequences.” Kausar said.
Parvez laughed sarcastically.
“What will you do? I will lock you up just like before.” Hesaid
Kausar smiled slyly at him shaking her head slowly.
“Do you think I will take that risk again? I have toleratedeverything over the years because they were all aimed at me. But this time youused me against my daughter. You think I would risk it happening again ? “ sheasked the man who looked at her speechless.
“I have written a letter stating that if anything happens tome or Seher, you and your wife are responsible for it. Barkat and Dr Fareedhave copies of it. She calls me everyday and if they cannot get through to me,they will give the letter to police.” Kausar continued smiling.
Parvez might have suspected it was a bluff but Safiya wasn’twilling to take the risk. That had cleared they way out from that house.
Barkat Puppo had given them shelter. She was Parvez’s firstcousin, a bold daring woman abandoned by her family. Her family had married heroff to an older man in Lucknow when she was quite young. The man had beenabusive and her family made no effort to help her. But she had taken a standfor herself. She had reported the guy to police, got him arrested and made alife for herself – all on her own. Their entire clan had turned against herwith the exception of Kausar, who had secretly sent her small amounts of moneyuntil she found a way to make a livelihood. Barkat was forever grateful toKausar for the support.
Barkat had welcomed them into her home happily. But a daylater Kausar and Barkat came to Seher when she was sitting on her bed stilltrying to make sense of her feelings.
“Seher, Bhabhi and I have decided something. You both haveto leave Lucknow. “ her aunt told her.
“Why Puppo ? Are we a burden to you? “ she asked confused.
“Of course not. But you have to leave for your own good. Youwill be safe in Delhi. I am sending you to someone I know rather well – Salma Khaala. She runs a NGO. She was the one who helped me get my life together after Idivorced that creep.” Barkat told her.
“But my divorce is not complete yet. I have to be here forthat, right?” Seher asked.
“That’s exactly why we should leave now, Seher. Once thedivorce happens you will be just Parvez Bhai’s daughter. His divorced daughter. And my brother is not going to keep itthat way for long. He will just take your mehr from the Niyazis, spend it onhis wife and then get you married to someone else as soon as he can. And thistime it may not be someone like Mahid.” Barkat explained holding her handssoftly.
Seher knew she was right. Next time it could be some old man.Someone abusive. Someone who would hurt her. Someone who didn’t care. Someonelike her father.
She shivered at the thought.
“Seher, listen to me. We have to leave. Its for the best.” Hermother told her and she knew she had to go.
That night they had moved to a different city and started anew life. The woman Barkat had sent them to was very kind. Salma was a retiredschool teacher in her late 60s who helped abused women start a new life. Barkatwas like a daughter to her and she had given them a place to stay in her ownhome. Her son was in Dubai with his family. He intended to return soon but tillthen she needed company. She was letting them stay with her and in returnKausar would take care of her. They had been more than grateful for thesituation. Salma Nani had been kind and warm.
They had been living with her for about a month when they anunexpected visitor showed up. Parvez Baig.
They had assumed he was there to drag them back home but totheir surprise he had just taken Kausar’s hand and divorced her. He said thatsince people had found out about her being divorce from Mahid, they were givingthe Baigs a hard time and Safiya had threatened to leave him unless he divorcedKausar. He didn’t want anything to do with Seher either. He had broughtdocuments mentioning he didn’t want any custody rights over Seher.
Seher and Kausar were overjoyed even if he intended it to bea punishment. They were finally free. They had started over rather happily. Herresults came a week later. She was among the top 1% in the state. Salma Nani hadgot her admission in the school where she had worked, with a scholarship.Kausar took care of the house, cooked for them and started with a tailoring jobthat Salma had got her. Salma was a healthy woman and took care of herself, soit wasn’t hard for them. Seher finally felt like the kite she had once wantedto be.
Life had been steady for the next 6 months and then another personfrom their past showed up.Dr Fareed. It was a cold winter night when he came tomeet them. He looked like he was in pain. He had asked to talk alone to her motherand then her mother had come out looking like she was going through hell. Hermother had told her nothing more than that she had to go to Lucknow urgentlyand will return in a few days. She had insisted on going with her but Kausar remindedher of her exams, promising her there was nothing to worry about.
And honestly, Seher didn’t want to go. She wasn’t ready tosee him again and there was no way she would go to Lucknow and not see him. Shedidn’t want to hear those words from him again. The second divorce. She wasn’t readyfor it yet. It had taken her months to get her life stable and she couldn’t affordany distractions at the moment. She wanted her full focus on her exams.
It was 3 weeks later than Kausar returned and when she hadshe had brought with her a new phase of life. Amal and Dr Fareed. Her motherhad married Dr Fareed. It had taken her some time to accept the whole truth.Amaal was her sister. Her sister who was presumed dead at birth, thanks to herfather who didn’t want to raise 2 daughters. He had abandoned her in the hospitalparking lot. Dr Fareed and his wife had adopted her. Sultana was the doctor whohad performed her delivery and years later she had recognized her as Amaal’sbiological mother. And they had hidden the truth from Kausar. While she wasaround them all along.
But a few months ago, Amaal had suspected something. She hadasked for a DNA test and Sultana had fabricated one. That had ended ratherbadly and Dr Fareed had finally decided to separate from her. Sultana had beentrying to get back with him but finally on the day of her divorce, she hadensured she hurt him. She had told Amaal that it wasn’t just she who had liedto her but her father too. She had told her Kausar was her birth mother. Amaalhad gone into shock. She had seizures the day Dr Fareed came to meet Kausar. After she was discharged, she and Dr Fareed had decided neither of them couldgive up Amaal and she wanted them both in her life. They had decided thatgetting married was the best solution to the situation.
She had taken a few days to come to terms with thesituation. She didn’t mind that her mother had remarried. She wanted her motherto be happy and Dr Fareed was a goodman. But the sudden change wasn’t easy to accept. She had stayed on with Salmaa few more days until her mother while her mother settled down into a new home nearby. When she had come back home Amaal and Dr Fareed had been nothing but warm toher. They were finally something like a normal family.
Seher came out of her thoughts as she heard Amaal yell forher to come down quickly as she was hungry. Changing into comfortable clothesshe came down for lunch. She took her usual place near her mother. Her motherserved her warm biryani and raita and she realized how hungry she was.
“Aapi plate mat khaa jaana.” Amaal teased across the table.
“Maine raat se kuch Nahin khaaya hai. Tu apni dekh, “ she repliedrolling her eyes.
“Main toh khaaoongi. Ammi ne khaas mere liye banaaya hai.”Amaal said cheekily.
“Donon ladna mat. Chup chaap khaao.” Kausar said nodding herhead.
“Its delicious.” Dr Fareed told her smiling.
Kausar smiled with a nod. This was what she had always wanted.A cozy home to call her own with her children and a husband who respected her. Notto mention the tiny tailoring business she ran. Life hadn’t gone as she plannedbut it wasn’t bad, was it?
Seher looked at her mother. The contentment on her mother’sface filled her heart. Maybe her divorce had been a good thing for everyone. Ithad made this possible hadn’t it? Maybe it was for the best, she thought.
But her heart disagreed.
