Sun signs are IMO important but for true readings of a particular person moon sign is integral. Sun stays in the same sign for a month regardless of whether it’s in Vedic Jyotish or per Western standards. But then that’s too broad a classification for people. God knows how many millions are born all over the world in a single month. If we use only sun signs for predictions then they are going to sort all people born within the same month in the similar category and we can’t expect everyone say born in January who is now classified after Makar Sankranti as a Capricorn Sun per Vedic traditions and I believe Aquarius sun per western traditions to have the same kind of life experiences based on the predictions of the planets in the sky at this particular point of time.
But when you use Vedic Jyotish, moon determines your zodiac sign and moon changes signs every 2.5 days and thus covers the entire 12 sign zodiac belt in a month too. Within each of those signs there are Nakshatras, between 12 signs there are 27 Nakshatras. These nakshatras are further divided into 4 segments. Each sign has 9 segments of Nakshatras. So, if we take it in the classical order Ashwini is the first, followed by Bharani and then Krittika, so on and so forth. Aries being the first sign has 9 segments - now Ashwini’s entirely in Aries as is Bharani but Krittika has 1 segment in Aries while the rest are in Taurus, the next sign. This continues until the last sign and Nakshatra namely Pisces and Revati.
These Nakshatras are the constellations which are thus named as they never move. Each of these Nakshatras is then governed by a different planet and all planets have 3 Nakshatras under their authority. Each of them has a specific deity that they worship which broadly means that they worship 27 different aspects of the divine with as many different qualities. There are elements they correspond to, birds, animals and even trees.
In Hindu households, names are also given to children based on the specific sound that resonates with the division of the Nakshatra of the moon that the child is born in so that they can hear that sound as often as possible and it is attuned to their subtle body.
When you multiply 27 x 4 =108. This is why these segments/divisions matter. In Vedic traditions, 108 is an important number. That’s why japa malas have 108 beads regardless of what kind, and the most simplest yet most powerful namavalis aka names that can be chanted of all gods and goddesses are 108.
108 when taken as individual numbers also amounts to 9 - we consider 9 planets as those that dictate our lives. It’s also considered as the distance between the sun, the moon and the earth as calculated by our Rishis. As in -
Distance from Earth to Sun ≈ 108 × Sun’s diameter
Distance from Earth to Moon ≈ 108 × Moon’s diameter
The Sun and the Moon are the two luminaries, the planets also equated with our Aatma (Soul) and Chit (loosely translated as memories of our past lives). Sun and Moon also represent our parents with Sun being the father and moon the mother.
108 also adds up to 9 which is the duration of pregnancy for humans.
So when an actual pandit makes your chart, all these things are taken into account.
So when you get your chart made, and say that you have a sibling or a friend born on the same day as well, you will not have the same exact charts though the two charts will share the same exact planetary positions in zodiac signs. A few minutes of difference between your sibling and you will give them an entirely different ascendant either in the main birth chart or if not there then certainly in the higher divisional charts which will completely alter the effects of these planets on your lives. Similarly, a friend born on the same day and even same time but at a different location will have a completely different ascendant than yours,
You are carrying forward your own karmas from god knows how many births, but when you are born in a certain place to a certain family to two specific individuals you also are carrying your share of karmas from your paternal and maternal lineages. The parents you are born too, your siblings are the people with whom you have the most important karmic relationships of your life. You are more often than not born in the same lineage until your karmic account is settled with those people for good or until that lineage itself dies out naturally or you attain moksha.
An actual Jyotish can tell you everything about your family, spouse, children, friends by looking at your chart. They can tell you regarding your health issues, career prospects and marriage troubles. They can even predict what kind of home/s you will live in and where, what sort of vehicles you will own if ever. They can predict when you can buy a new home/car/office etc.
An even better Jyotish can tell you when certain planetary transits and your own specific dashas determined by your moon sign will give you good or bad times. When you might shift to a different country altogether, to marry someone, have a kid to even the potential demise of a loved one.
I know all this simply because I know some basics about Jyotish. I don’t even have any full fledged knowledge to read and predict.
