We're very progressive where there's no discrimination between a son and daughter and the daughter is allowed to pursue her dreams and this is not only in her family but even her in - laws family too. The daughter in law is allowed to study as well as go out and work. Thankfully we don't have multiple marriages. If you don't know about my community you can Google and check out.

I have heard of the Dawoodi Bohra community. Know they’re prominently based in Gujarat and Mumbai but thanks for sharing the rest of the info. Didn’t know these things.

Well… the show is based on Muslims so this is a very normal thing in their culture. They practically even get married to their uncles. I remember there was this really viral clip of a woman from Pakistan who was married to her own Mama. She was laughing when she said she went from calling him Mamu Jaan to Jaan. The show is problematic to us because to us this isn’t just acceptable but they practice it. Frankly I don’t think I’ll follow the show ever because I find Parth very mediocre as an actor but if they’re showing this stuff then they’re gutsy enough to show the world that is true to the community that their characters are shown from.

Cousin marriages are allowed as they are non-mahrams: people you are not closely related to by blood, marriage, or breastfeeding, and with whom Islamic boundaries (hijab, modest interaction) apply.

First uncles and aunts (mamo, chacha, khala etc ) are mahram, so marriage with them is haram (forbidden) in Islam. Regarding that viral clip, maybe that mama wasn't directly related and was her mother's first cousin, so technically a non-mahram as well.

I believe girls are allowed to be independent in all sects of Islam. It is the societal and traditional mindset that is problematic. ITV always presents a very wrong version of Islam, which is completely unacceptable.

Many of my classmates were Bohri too in my school/college, and we shared almost the same culture and opinions. My city Karachi is also home to a significant Bohra community, mainly doing clothing business. So, in general, Muslims are very progressive in my city: girls go to universities, and several move abroad for higher studies and career progression unlike what is being depicted in television serials. These tv shows mostly mock religious beliefs, be it islam or others.

Jhanak, for example, became widely discussed for its controversial narrative choice of depicting a man involved in physical relationships with two biological sisters that is forbidden and against Islamic principles and many traditional cultural frameworks.

These TV shows should be treated for entertainment purposes only. Otherwise, in normal socities, has anyone seen grandparents doing EMA like Mihir at this age 😏

Rithik after getting married to Mitali, now talking happily with Munni is also a sign of glorified EMA.

In Islam, cousin marriage is allowed because it is not prohibited in the Qur’an or the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Islam sets clear rules about who is forbidden to marry (like parents, siblings, aunts, and uncles), and cousins are not included in that list.

It is a permission, not an obligation, many Muslims choose not to marry cousins. This practice is not unique to Islam, it has been widely practiced across the world and in other religions and cultures, including parts of South Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and even historically in Judaism and Christian societies. It is a cultural choice, not a religious requirement.
