Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark
The cottage stood silent.
Too silent.
A strange stillness hung in the airâas if time itself had slowed down the moment they stepped inside.
It didnât feel abandoned.
It felt⌠paused.
âOkay⌠this place is way too fancy to be abandoned,â Bharat muttered, his voice echoing slightly as he looked around.
Wooden chandeliers hung from the ceiling, their intricate carvings catching the dim light. Antique furniture stood perfectly in place, untouched by dust. A faint scent lingered in the airâold, yet not decayed.
Almost like memories.
âExactly,â Vishakha added, hugging herself. âIf this place is empty, why does it feel like someone just left?â
âGuys, stop it,â Neha said nervously. âYouâre making it creepy.â
âCreepy?â Sharon smirked, flipping her hair. âPlease. Itâs just an old cottage.â
But even she couldnât ignore the chill that brushed against her skin like invisible fingers.

Dividing Rooms
âLetâs just settle in for the night,â Swayam said, his tone calm but firm. âWeâll leave first thing in the morning.â
No one argued.
They all felt it.
Something was off.
Rooms were quickly divided:
⢠Boys: Rey, Swayam, Vicky, Bharat, Amar, Nilesh
⢠Girls: Kriya, Sharon, Neha, Vishakha, Rimmi, Simmi
And thenâ
âIâll take that room,â Antara said, pointing to one closer to the boysâ side.
Closer to Rey.
Of course.
Kriya noticed.
Her fingers tightened slightly around her bag.
But she said nothing.
Just looked away.

The First Sign
As everyone began moving upstairsâ
CreeaaakâŚ
The staircase groaned loudly under their weight.
Rey paused.
His brows furrowed.
âDid you hear that?â
âHear what?â Vicky replied casually.
Rey hesitated.
It didnât sound like wood.
It sounded likeâŚ
Footsteps.
Behind them.
Slow.
Dragging.
He turned sharply.
Nothing.
Just an empty hallway staring back at him.
He exhaled. âNothing.â
But the uneasiness didnât leave.
It settled deep inside his chest.

Girlsâ Room
The girls entered a large room, dimly lit and strangely cold.
Two beds stood against the wall, with extra mattresses scattered nearby.
âOkay, I call this side!â Simmi declared, jumping onto one of the beds.
âObviously,â Vishakha rolled her eyes.
Their laughter filled the room briefly.
But it didnât last.
Kriya stood near the window.
The wind had grown stronger.
The curtains fluttered wildly now, almost violently.
She wrapped her arms around herself.
That feeling again.
That pull.
That whisper she couldnât hear⌠but could feel.
âKriya?â Sharon walked up to her. âWhere are you lost?â
Kriya didnât look at her.
âDo you feel it?â she asked softly.
âFeel what?â
Kriya hesitated.
âI donât know⌠it just feels like⌠we were supposed to come here.â
Sharon frowned. âDonât start. Itâs just a coincidence.â
But even she couldnât stop herself from glancing at the door.
For a secondâ
She thought she saw something move outside.
She quickly shut it.
âLetâs just sleep,â she said.

Boysâ Room
Meanwhile, the boysâ room was filled with chaos.
âBest unexpected trip ever!â Amar shouted, jumping onto the bed.
âYeah, until a ghost shows up,â Nilesh joked.
âShut up!â Bharat threw a pillow at him.
Laughter echoed.
But Rey sat quietly at the edge of his bed.
Lost.
âKriyaâŚâ he whispered unconsciously.
Swayam noticed immediately.
âStill running away?â he asked, leaning against the wall.
Rey sighed. âI donât know what to say to her.â
âTry the truth.â
Rey gave a faint smile. âSounds easy when you say it.â
Swayam smirked. âThatâs because Iâm smarter than you.â
Rey was about to replyâ
Knock.
Everything stopped.
The room fell silent.
They all stared at the door.
âWho is it?â Swayam called.
No response.
Vicky walked toward the door slowly and opened it.
Nothing.
The corridor was empty.
âNice joke,â he muttered.
But as he turnedâ
CreeeakâŚ
The door slowly closed on its own.
No one touched it.
No wind.
Nothing.
âOkay⌠that was not funny,â Amar whispered.
Rey and Swayam exchanged a look.
This wasnât normal.

Antaraâs Room
Antara stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair.
A smile played on her lips.
âReyâŚâ she whispered dreamily.
Suddenlyâ
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then dimmed.
Her smile faded.
âHello? Is anyone there?â
No answer.
Thenâ
The mirror fogged up.
Slowly.
As if someone had just breathed on it.
Right behind her.
Antara froze.
Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.
And thenâ
Letters began to form.
One by one.
Slow.
Deliberate.
L E A V E
Her breath hitched.
âWhat the hell?!â she gasped, stumbling back.
She rushed to the door and flung it open.
The corridor was empty.
But she felt it.
That presence.
Close.
Too close.
Like someone had just stepped away from her.
Watching.

Midnight
The clock struck twelve.
And the cottage changed.
The air grew heavier.
Thicker.
Unnatural.
No wind.
No insects.
No sound.
Just silence.

Kriya
Kriyaâs eyes snapped open.
Her breathing uneven.
Her heart racing.
She looked around.
Everyone was asleep.
But something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
Thenâ
A whisper.
Soft.
Broken.
âKriyaâŚâ
Her blood ran cold.
She sat up slowly.
âWhoâs there?â
Silence.
Againâ
âKriyaâŚâ
Closer this time.
Right outside the door.
Without thinkingâ
She stood up.
And walked toward it.
As if something invisible was pulling her.

Rey
At the same momentâ
Reyâs eyes opened abruptly.
He sat up, breathing heavily.
âKriyaâŚâ
He didnât know how.
He didnât know why.
But he felt it.
Like she needed him.
Right now.
He stood up immediately.
âIâll be back,â he muttered.
âWhereââ Swayam began.
But Rey was already gone.

The Corridor
Kriya stepped into the corridor.
Her movements slow.
Unsteady.
Like she wasnât fully in control.
The lights flickered as she walked.
âKriyaâŚâ
The whisper echoed again.
Calling her.
Guiding her.
She followed it.
Toward the staircase.
Upstairs.

The Shadow
At the topâ
Something stood.
A shadow.
Tall.
Still.
Watching her.
Kriya stopped.
Her voice trembled.
âWho⌠are you?â
The shadow didnât respond.
It simply stepped back.
As if inviting her.
Closer.

Rey Arrives
âKRIYA!â
Reyâs voice shattered the silence.
Kriya turned.
Her trance broke instantly.
âReyâŚ?â
And thenâ
The shadow moved.
Fast.
Violent.
The lights went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Kriya screamed.
Rey ran forward blindlyâ
And caught her.
âDonât let go!â she cried, clutching him tightly.
âIâm here,â he said firmly. âIâm not going anywhere.â
The lights flickered back.
The corridor was empty.
No shadow.
No presence.
Nothing.
Exceptâ
The cold.
Still there.

Realization
Footsteps rushed up the stairs.
âWhat happened?!â Sharon asked, panic clear in her voice.
Kriya clung to Rey, trembling.
âThere was⌠someone,â she whispered.
Rey tightened his hold on her hand.
âI saw it too.â
Silence fell.
No jokes.
No laughter.
Because nowâ
They all felt it.
The truth.
They werenât alone.

Final Scene
Somewhere deep inside the cottageâŚ
Hidden behind a locked doorâŚ
A faint creak echoed.
The door opened slightly.
Insideâ
Old photographs lay scattered across a dusty table.
One picture slid slowly to the floor.
It showedâ
A girl.
Standing near the same cottage.
Her faceâŚ
Identical to Kriya.
And beside herâ
A shadow.
Dark.
Undefined.
Waiting.
Scratched beneath the photo were the words:
âYOU CAME BACK.â
