Both the singer and the actress create magic, but in different ways. The singer gives the soul—an invisible, universal power that touches hearts beyond barriers of language and culture. The actress, on the other hand, gives the body—making emotions visible, personal, and relatable through expression and presence. One is felt, the other is seen. Yet, when soul and body meet, the magic becomes complete. Still, if the essence must be chosen, it is the singer’s soul that breathes life into art, for without the invisible spark of feeling, the visible form would remain empty.

The major factors influencing a song's prominence are an excellent voice and an actor's talent. But we can't ignore the lyricist's importance in a song's success; it's the emotional core of the song!! The lyricist’s role in a song’s success is often underestimated, but it’s actually central.

Lyrics provide the soul and story to a song. Even the most beautiful tune can feel empty without words that connect.

Do you agree?

For me it is the singer/s and the music. I used to listen to audio songs a lot. I remember most of the songs only when I listen to them. There are only few songs (I can count them on my fingers) which I remember after watching the visuals.

Cheers..

Agree with you as well, Raji. smiley27

When there are no visuals, only the tune carries the entire weight of communication. Music itself is a direct emotional language. The tune bypasses intellect and visuals, and speaks straight to our inner feelings. Without visuals, the mind paints its own pictures. A haunting flute might conjure a lonely mountain; a vibrant drumbeat, a festival. In fact, the absence of visuals lets our imagination run free, creating a deeply personal connection.

Yes, I completely agree. 🌸

A song is like a living being — the singer’s voice gives it breath, the actor’s talent gives it form, but the lyricist’s words give it a heart and soul. Without meaningful lyrics, even the sweetest melody can feel hollow, because it is the words that carry emotions, tell stories, and create connections that stay with us long after the music ends. The lyricist translates feelings into language, making the invisible visible. In that sense, their contribution is not just important but central to a song’s lasting success.

Lizzie, I was eagerly waiting for your opinion on this favorite subject of ours! And here you are, sharing such beautiful references. Thank you, dear.smiley27

The singer gives the soul and the actress gives the body, when both elements—voice and action, come together, the scene gains its charm and eternal depth. If either falters, the impact is reduced. As you mentioned, in many occasions we saw the difference.

Here are a few songs which are popular because of the singer's expressive voice---

Lata Mangeshkar: "Lag Ja Gale" Woh Kaun Thi?

Sadhana appeared graceful, but it was Lata's haunting voice that immortalised the song. Even without viewing the scene, audiences are moved by her rendition's agony, longing, and delicacy.

Mohammed Rafi, "Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho"

Guru Dutt's expressions are subtle, but Rafi's voice lifts the tune to ethereal romance.

Kishore Kumar — "Kuch To Log Kahenge" Amar Prem

Sharmila Tagore's presence was understated, but Kishore's warm, philosophical rendition gave the song eternal emotional depth.

In the same way--- Here are a few examples of the actress' talent that added immense depth and dimension to the playback, making it memorable.

Madhubala: "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya" Mughal-e Azam,

Lata's singing is faultless, but Madhubala's fierce defiance, eyes filled with love and rebellion, gave the scene legendary power!!

Meena Kumari: "Chalte Chalte Yunhi Koi" Pakeezah

The song is beautiful on its own, but Meena Kumari's sorrowful demeanour and restrained expressions make it heartbreaking!

Madhuri Dixit, "Maar Dala" in Devdas

Kavita Krishnamurthy's voice is impressive, but Madhuri's emotional movement and eyes lend the song grandeur and agony.

However, there are a few songs that highlight the singer's melodic voice and the actor's amazing talent, making them all-time greats.

The best examples are---

Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa-- Aandhi

Kishore-Lata's heartfelt duet combines perfectly with Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen's nuanced performances. Both the voice and the expression made it immortal.smiley10

"Tujhe Dekha To" Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar's passionate interpretation along with Shah Rukh-Kajol's chemistry resulted in one of Bollywood's most popular love ballads.smiley10

So, sometimes the voice alone keeps the song alive across generations, and occasionally the face on TV adds cultural significance. The great masterpieces are those in which both blend smoothly.

I agree with you on Govinda's songs....he brought energy, comic timing, quirky expressions, and effortless freestyle that made his songs unforgettable. smiley4

Thanks for the tag di..

Hope u r in high spirits.

Bdw what about ye dil deewaana from pardes..

Perfect actor-singer collab 🔥

I also think song picturization has changed sooo much in movies. Nowadays visualization is given a lot more importance to suit the audience’s sensibilities. Earlier the emphasis was more on the song and just the actor lip-syncing to it. So it boils down to the audience’s perception. If you take one song - any song - person X may think it’s the MD who knocked it out of the park with the tune while Person Y may feel the lyrics are the true icing on the cake while a third person may think it’s the singer who enhanced it while a fourth may be a fan of the actor performing it. There is no one correct answer. After all, all art is subjective.

Given that, I think the world of playback singing is quite complex. Usually a musician will write his own song based on their experiences, compose music and sing it too - it’s a personal thing for them. But here - nothing is personal. Writer A writes lyrics to convey B (the actor’s) feelings on screen in context, C composes music for it based on the character’s emotion that needs to be conveyed and D sings it - channeling that same emotion. It’s a team effort and seeing as how many people are involved it’s easily probable that the final product loses its punch and gets diluted. You know the saying - Too many cooks spoil the broth? But here it seems like too many cooks make a gourmet meal. smiley36And that is something that’s so unique and so commendable in the world of Indian movies! I don’t think we appreciate it enough.

Depends on the song, for me I prefer my mind creating a video of its own, probably cuz I grew up listening to radio and cassette. Watching songs isn't something I prefer even today. There are very few exceptions to it though. smiley9

Who deserves more credit—the singer who breaks our hearts with a voice… or the actress who cries in 4K slow-mo without smudging her eyeliner? Tough call, pass the popcorn! 🎤🎬😂
