Calla, imo, seems more adaptable but even so - her entire life has been in Toronto. So for her to make that switch is a tall order as well given how extreme the conditions are in Alaska.

The book was slow, but the relationships were nicely drawn out, I didn’t love it but didn’t hate it either and the writing was decent.

Wren is someone who seems to inspire loyalty and love without really giving much of himself to anyone - which is rare and strange and kinda unfair right? I mean Jonah, Agnes, Mabel, Susan and finally Calla - all loved him but he really doesn’t do much for them, he just followed his heart and did as he damn well pleased - even right down to his smoking till it killed him. I wonder about people like that … you keep giving, giving and giving without getting anything from them in return. Not that he asked for it - but still, he got it. Pretty lucky I’d call it.

I agree, especially when he should have been grateful that she came all the way even though he never showed up, he was downright cold. Talk about getting everything when he doesn't deserve anything.

@b: nothing but sheer luck because sure as hell it ain't karma.

Devotion of suspect X ? Instead of splitting up the chapters, maybe we can complete half the book at a stretch and come back ? Because you don't usually read this genre right ?

In case you aren't feeling it, feel free to let me know. We can DNF & start something else. Looks good ?

If you want to suggest something else, I'm for it and please do!

@bold: Thrillers? I do read a LOT of thrillers. Unless this isn’t one?

Yeah I’m okay with that plan. I’m currently in the middle of a book. I’ll start this one when I’m done with that. Feel free to start and read ahead and we’ll circle back in a day or two?

Idk if he was cold as much as being emotionally stunted. Some people are like that - unable to be emotionally expressive. They hold back all their lives being unable to tell the people that are important to them how they feel about them.

Wren was a decent enough guy but it seemed to me like he did bare minimum to inspire the kind of love and loyalty he got back. That’s why I said I wished there were more in-depth conversations between him and Calla. Or we got an insight on him and Susan when she returned right before he died. The scene where they sob together for everything they lost was poignant but it felt more like a scene like it would play out in a movie. Or maybe it’s powerful enough that the emotional catharsis was enough to heal both of them?

Oh sorry, I remember you saying you don't usually do this in buddy read so I assumed thrillers aren't your preferred genre.

@b: sure, good plan! We can do this.

Did I say that? 😅Odd if I did cos thrillers are my second go-to genre after Romance - especially psychological thrillers. Maybe I said I don’t do Buddy reads with them cos it maybe harder to pace thrillers?

Oh oh. Sorry my bad, probably I understood it that way. I'm glad because even I love psychological thrillers, especially crime.

The blurb is reminding me of the movie Drishyam though the internet is telling me it’s not an adaptation.

Yeah! It sounds eerily similar to Drishyam, but it is not an adaptation. Although there was a Japanese film adapted from the book.

How are you doing with the book?

I’m on Chapter 9 - it’s good so far though the translation could have been better - some words just don’t make sense. I saw ‘don’t look so frightening’ where I’m sure they meant to use ‘frightened’. Or ‘then’ instead of ‘than’

Idk if it’s a cultural thing but some things are surprising to me. Like a hospital doesn’t tell a patient what they have without family consent? Is that a thing in Japan? 😳
