My recommendation would be to start with any of these:

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd - Poirot

Murder on the Orient Express - Poirot

And then there were none (standalone)

I agree. Poirot is more iconic AC. Marple is a bit different and honestly once you get the hang of Poirot, Marple is more fun and I mean that in the writing sense not the murder sense. smiley37

Poirot is a pompous ass honestly smiley36, & I’d love to have seen more instances where he had his ass handed down to him. Even AC admitted that she found him insufferable. smiley36

Marple, otoh, is this benign, sweet old grandma with a quiet taste for the macabre. And I do love those sleepy old village settings in her books, and the way she just sits there and solves the mystery without really doing much leg work. I love rooting for the underdog. smiley15

That too. Poirot solving a case is like "of course he solved it but did he have to be such an ass about it", while Marple solving a case is like "oh how didn't I catch that clue and how smart is she". Marple is like the sweet grandma of the society who everyone goes to for stories and is properly entertained while Poirot is that khadoos English teacher who everyone hates but still does well in his class because he isn't mean to his students, he just doesn't understand how much of an ass he is. smiley36

You know that AC caricatured Ariadne Oliver on herself right? The hapless & harried English writer who had dug herself into a hole by writing a successful book and now had to come up with the next impossible mystery for her exotic and strange detective - Finn Hjerson - who was obviously modeled after Poirot - to solve smiley37

I love how she made those books so meta smiley36.

Yep I knew about that. There are a few authors like that. Who model a character after themselves and then get into "trouble" in the reel world. smiley36 She's probably the OG in that space though.

Actually the other reason I commented on this is because I'm just about to pick up Poirot's series from the start to the end. I'm almost done with John Gilstrap's Jonathan Grave series (or at least all caught up) so I need a new series to work on now and it just happened to be this one. smiley36

Short stories or full length novels? I do like revisiting AC every now and then. They’re nice palate cleansers smiley36 in between all the other reading I do. I do want to re-read her standalones at some point - it’s been a while and I’ve forgotten the plots for some of them.

Great! Thank you so much! Let me start off with Murder on the Orient Express, because that seems to be one of the more popular ones!

Thank you for the recommendation, Lizzie!smiley31

I've actually read just one book of AC quite a long time ago, 'cause I found the book at home. It was "A Pocketful of Rye" from the Miss Marple series, and I really loved it!
