What’s scary is not the plot ... it’s how numb we’ve become to all this. Poison in halwa? Arre, normal hai. Husband cheating with his secretary and saali? Yeh toh routine hai smiley29

Even need to stop with the “marriage as punishment” trope? She broke ur heart in college so now u’ll marry her and torture her for 200 episodes? Bro, go to therapy, not mandap smiley34

Who even needs Netflix when every Indian serial gives u

3 weddings, 2 kidnappings, 5 reincarnations, 1 illegitimate child, and 0 logic

all before lunch smiley37

At this point I wouldn’t be shocked if the next serial shows someone marrying a ghost for property rights ...

Just as i think isse crazy kuch nai ho sakta .. ye log apni aukat dikha dete hai smiley36

Back then there were really few good shows yaar ... Jodha Akbar, Chandra Nandini, Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke .. Bade Acche Lagte Hain (1st one) .. they don't make shows like these anymore

As funny as this post is.. I think we are all digressing from the actual point - Is this influencing people to do this in real life? I believe the answer is still NO.

We all have our complaints from ITV and I never meant to say that the ongoing shows are good (I don't even watch ITV for that matter smiley36). But all the sensational happenings on TV shows are just there to grab the audience. I doubt anyone.. even the fans of such shows... would say that this is okay in real life. No one is watching such shows and getting influenced to marry for revenge the next day... or poisoning their Saas / Bahu's halwa after an argument. People are able to distinguish fiction from reality. Which is the point being discussed here.. that it's not really affecting people's thoughts or mindsets.

To everyone complaining about ITV and the digressive plots -

  1. Wrong place to do that... this is a debate thread about reality being affected by what fiction we watch. Maybe someone can make a frustrations thread where everyone can vent about the rest of it.
  2. Be the change you want. If you don't like the plots, STOP watching AND DISCUSSING the show. You are contributing to TRPS and publicity for the show. In fact, due to social media these days, one random clip about a bizarre scene from some show can become viral and lead to it gaining more viewership in turn. That's probably half the reason they come up with such plots... to stay relevant in news and SM. Instead, use your handles to promote shows with decent plots. If the media chatter moves onto those kind of plotlines, the makers will realize what's popular now and start making that instead. It's all a game of demand and supply for them in the end.

The thing that I find very weird in ITV serials and which irritates me to no end is two women fighting for a man, most of the times, they are sisters or friends.

And I was like are, insano ko nahi bakhsha, kam se kam naagino ko to chhod do. They are snakes. Unko bhi ek aadmi ke liye apas mein ladaane ki kya zaroorat haismiley44

And they keep reinstating with this that aurat hi aurat ki dushman haismiley44

Exactly! It's like ITV serials have a template: two women, preferably sisters or best friends, fighting over a man who’s often not even worth the drama. And now even shape-shifting snakes aren’t spared from this nonsense? I mean, seriously? Naagins with supernatural powers... but no agency beyond a man? That's not creativity, that's laziness.

And the worst part is how they subtly (or not-so-subtly) keep pushing that ‘aurat hi aurat ki dushman hai’ narrative — as if that’s the only kind of female dynamic worth showing. How about showing women supporting each other for once instead of reinforcing tired old tropes?

Oh, they’ve tried showing something like that… but then they still end up making Nandini fall for Mauli’s husband.

I have watched that show and to be honest, it really affected me so much that I didn't want to get married. I already had a few insecurities since childhood but watching that show made me feel that even a perfect kind of girl Mauli can be cheated like that.

They couldn't show them choosing each other's friendship over a man. That aurat ki dushman aurat narrative needs to stop really.

Recently, serials started portraying physical and emotional abuse within family, esp in marital relationships, sometimes as a plot device or as a recurring theme.

Another reoccurring theme is the propagation of murder or attempted murder in the context of marriage, which frequently involves complicated plans and revenge.

Extramarital affairs are a typical storyline, often resulting in conflict, jealousy, blackmail, exploitation and even murder.

It's important to note that these are fictional narratives, and while they may entertain, they can also carry a risk of desensitising viewers to the seriousness of violence and criminal behavior within relationships.

How far is it acceptable to view murders and wicked plots to ruin someone's life as part of our daily entertainment?

Instead Of Showing The Female Character Getting A Job Standing On Her On Own She Has To End Up Getting Married Either Forcefully A Hate Marriage Between The Leads

Or End Up Getting Married To Someone Else Completely Different Then Her Best Friend

For Revenge

Current Example The Recent Plot Of Kumkum Bhagya 's Gen 4

Same Horrible Hate Marriage

The Main Lead Married The Female Lead And She Just Accepted Him As Her Husband

Really Dumb

The Leads Aren't Even Worth Mentioning

Sorry to hear about your experiencesmiley13.

But I'm also very surprised by it. In so many years of being on IF.. and also with knowing people who watch ITV irl... I've hardly ever known anyone to get that affected by a show's plot. Even during all the fans wars, whenever any supporter of an abusive character was asked if they would like a guy like that in real life, they always said they wouldn't... but this is fiction and should be kept separate from real life. So I kinda always thought that fans.. even the full on crazy ones that could get into forum fights.. knew not to take the show's plot seriously or apply it to real lives.

Can I ask you a couple of questions (not personal) if you don't mind? Not trying to be demeaning or anything, I'm just genuinely curious and want to understand your viewpoint. It's okay if you say no too smiley27.

I am one of those who want sensible tv but also know how to differentiate between fiction and reality. Guess what happened with me was that I was insecure about myself since childhood and at that particular time, my self-esteem was at an all time low. And I was totally vulnerable. A vulnerable person gets affected by everything.

Please no questions.

ITV marriages normalize crimes against women and show how women have to work hard to win love of those who abuse her, she can stop the abuse by loving them and serving them
